Or am I just being too self-counscious in my own nerdy, progressive way?

Was going to post a longer message, but it was boring. And by the way, I only do it, max, about once a month.

2. I love the smell of good cigars . . .
but only if they're smoked outdoors and if the smoker is courteous about it. I don't know what conclusions anyone could draw about your politics from the fact that you like to smoke cigars . . .

4. now-obscure early labor union movement attitude toward cigars I found when
doing research.

And I only smoke outdoors, and so far only one I've smoked made my friends complain. But they have to complain.

3. No, it makes you a potential saviour of Social Security

The more of you early death voluteers, the better the finances and the more left for the rest of us.

We salute your public spirit.

8. No
The right wing has tried to appropriate the habit as a signifier of being A Real Man, but it doesn't seem to be working. All sorts of people smoke cigars for all sorts of reasons.

Personally? I hate 'em. They smell bad, and they're not all that good for you. But if you're polite and in control of your vices, well, it's no problem in my eyes.

Incidentally, I've been writing a S-F satire on right-wingers, and cigar smoking and advertizing is one of the backdrops of the story. I play it up as being ridiculous -- not so much the habit itself, as much as smokers congratulating each other on how politically incorrect they are for puffing away.

If I get the beast sold, I'll post more about it.

9. Keep us updated
I used to write a lot of SF, but stopped after I began to read alot more nonfiction. Still get weird bursts of creativity though. The work you mentioned sounds interesting.

10. No. It makes you a potential cancer victim, it makes you smell bad,
and it makes me hope that I don't have to be near you for your monthly smoke, but it doesn't make you a capitalist.
