I also live in Texas (Houston) and would love to move to the Pacific Northwest. I have a couple of friends who moved from Texas (Austin and Houston) to Portland, and they both say they are never moving back.

I don't blame them - it looks beautiful there.

If I can, I'd like to take a couple of weeks to explore, see if I can get a job, etc.

But the rest of the state encroaches on us with all the crappy state laws that are passed. Outside Austin, I relate to few people.

The only potential pitfall is having to sell my house. That's why I have to be set up someplace else before I up and move.

74. I can't deal with it anymore, either.
If even half of the predictions about Peak Oil come true, then this place is doomed. This entire city was built on the premise of endless quantities of cheap oil and mass use of central A/C. Houston was built for the convenience of automobiles, not people -- in other words, it is not built on a human scale. As oil grows more scarce and expensive, life will become exponentially more difficult here.

I would love to move to a city that has excellent public transportation, where I can walk, bike, or take a bus or train everywhere I need to go.

Texas is too car-centric. I love driving, but out in the open country. Here you have to get in your car to go anywhere.

Good public transportation and an actual neighborhood is a must for anywhere I go.

99. I walked through a couple of neighborhoods in Seattle that were great.
You could go grocery shopping and pretty much do everything not work-related right there. (If you choose the right job, you can do that, too.) Surprisingly, in town the stores did not have the behemoth parking lots that we have here. :)
