9. I always thought of them as a NY/Jersey thing
But like how In-N-Out has spread to Norcal, I'll bet White Castle made it to Chicagoland.

Besides, I'm told you can get Peets Coffee in Boston now (and Peets is TOTALLY a Berkeley CA thing)

18. Me too, but...it didn't even start out on the East Coast.
"Fun Facts" from the White Castle site:

1921 - the first White Castle opens in Wichita, Kansas, offering hamburgers at the unbelievable price of $.05 a piece.

1949 - five holes are added to the burger after a White Castle employee notices that the five holes help the patties cook faster and more evenly.

1986 - The Smithereens,a New Jersey rock group, write a song called “White Castle Blues,” which appears on their debut album.

1994 - Se habla Slyder®! White Castle products are exported to Mexico.

Now *that's* a turnabout on Montezuma's Revenge, ain't it?

I'm old enough to remember when the burgers were a dime each, so that dates me significantly. I can recall gasping when they leapt to twelve cents. And the "shake" was twenty cents.

I always loathed liver as a child, I still loathe liver today, and I'd be amazed if there'd been any liver in these things 40 years ago when I was eatin' 'em.

Not as good as I had hoped (and I should be bragging about them. I know that I can link the people who started them somewhere in my tree. They won't even give me free food. )
I have an uncle who goes into the chains, pulls out his drivers lic, shows it to the worker and demands to see their manager (he tells them he's from corporate. He's not). They usually give him free stuff after he tells them it's a joke.

32. Always wanted to try Dick's,
when I lived in Capitol Hill, but I never felt like braving the "wildlife" at the Broadway location when there was a Tacos Guaymas so much closer...

And Queen Anne... are you kidding, the Pagliacci is right there. So I never went to that one either.

I consider it a lost opportunity. Or something.

Besides, it always felt like a relic from the '70s, and not that clean.

Their food seems the same (pretty darn good for drive-through).

76. Culver's
Of course, the midwest is left out, not that I'm surprised.

79. In-N-Out
Every time I go to LA or Vegas I make a pilgramage to In-N-Out. Everything is so fresh and good. Just greasy enough, but not overly so. Gotta love the Zen simplicity of the menu - Burger/Cheeseburger/Double Burger/Double Cheeseburger. No mystery chicken or anything else. And the fries are to die for. Burger Heaven.

Also props for Fatburger and Culver's.
