7. no sorry, my bad......
Edited on Sun Jul-31-05 02:26 PM by Wetzelbill
I just, it just sits with me wrong to see anybody say something like that about a dead person. No matter who they are. Yeah, I get pissed too. I remember saying something I immediately regretted when I heard Ronald Reagan was on his deathbed. I knew right away that I let my anger at cold-hearted shitty policy, get the better of my compassion for others.

Lee Atwater did some bad things, no doubt. He acknowledged it. And, I believe people like Dick Cheney, Karl Rove and their ilk get what they deserve in the end. Atwater definitely fits into that group. I just think that what we believe in and what we stand for, our compassion, our morality, our love of people and willingness to be inclusive of others who are different than us, I think that just makes us better than the ones who persecute us and who are ruining our country. It's just best that we channel our anger somewhere else. We can't let that shit get the best of us otherwise our anger makes us sink to their level.

But, yeah, I didn't mean to seem like I was snapping at you or anything. I fully understand why you'd say that. I feel that way myself, to an extent. However, part of the reason that we're on this side of the fence is because we are good people and don't need to engage in that sort of thing. So, just to let you know, I'm sorry about that.

15. compassion is part of the key to a better future
taking the high road is nothing to be sorry for Bill

but those who choose to live with hatred in their heart will be poisoned by it ... the old saying goes ... hate the sin but not the sinner

23. Somehow, I have a feeling that had Lee survived/recovered
He would've tag-teamed with Brock, making Media Matters 20 times more lethal than it already is (and it's pretty hardhitting right now).

He was just as bad, if not worse, than Rove. I hope his brain really hurt right before he kicked it.* Yeah, he apologized publicly for his wrongdoings, but did he really atone?

*yes, I have that little compassion left for "humanity."

16. I've got to believe that if there is a Hell, Atwater is in it.
Edited on Sun Jul-31-05 04:14 PM by Bush_Eats_Beef
It's a shame that he got a brain tumor.

The lives of the people he ruined is a BIGGER shame.

That may seem harsh, but how many people can you actually screw over before your own misfortune nullifies your actions?

ON EDIT: Yes, Christians (and I am one) are instructed NOT to judge others, and that if we want forgiveness, WE need to forgive.

I just wonder...and maybe I shouldn't...if Atwater would have felt an ounce of remorse if he DIDN'T get that brain tumor, or if he would have simply kept bending people over?

Based on his actions in life, I've gotta go with option #2, and leave his reward for the life he lived in God's hands.

Pretty sure, anyway. It's a disgrace to see such a capable guitar in the man that knows nothing about playing it. Like giving a Ferrari to a toddler for his birthday.

11. It was one of Atwater's guitars. Poppy couldn't play a note.....
...He was just faking it. Atwater though was said to be a decent guitarist. Too bad he didn't choose music as a career rather than hatred. He might have lived longer. Call it karma or whatever, but I don't find it coincidental at all that a man who used his brain for unending evil died of a brain tumor.

18. Atwater
Lee A. has many counterparts in the south--guys who play black music, admire it, and who still hold the makers of that music and their culture in contempt. Atwater was a duffer on guitar, really, just another halfass blues and r&b basher, and he had no ear for music, just a desire to get up onstage and get his nut. Also, the GOP is always looking for ways to make their square culture seem cooler, so Atwater, among other rocknroll repugs, fit the bill. Bennett played guitar and dated Janis Joplin, with whom he shared a noticeable trait.

I love the blues, but it has been co-opted by the GOP (peace, David Vest!)and the jump blues thing is almost entirely the Repub official theme music, that is when it is not used to sell beer or cars.

BTW, sorry, pluralistic nice folks and gentle souls, Lee Atwater can burn.

A friend of mine who's an actress and performance artist told me once the best way to make the best guitar faces - "Just imagine: you're having sex, and it HURTS."

17. Judge the Sin, not the sinner.....
Is probably one of the best of all the Christian Adages....

I personally think what Lee Atwater did to attain power was and continues to be despicable. But the man was a product of his times.

America, capitalism really, in it's last throws is all about playing on the competitive spirit....

And if you have nothing to compete with, if you are bereft of ideas and ideals, the only recourse left, to fulfill the Prime American philosophical tenant of to win at all costs, is smear and pummel your opponent.....

Cheating is rampant in our society. Kids admit to cheating, somewhere in the vicinity of 60&-70%. Look at all the business leaders who will do anything to get that least piece of market share....

Lee Atwater is just a refection of that business philosophy....

Why do the dems continue to wilt against this onslaught, because we don't come from the business world, we don't understand that whole outlook....

To make a long story short....

Lee ATwater is the personification of all that is horrible about America, naked competitive lust that can only be sated through winning at any cost...

Will his soul rot in hell? If there really is an after life, a ying and a yang, a sense of Karma, then maybe he will held accountable...

If there isn't, then he has won by making the earth we live in a living hell for those he has used to attain his moment of power.....

Cause from what I see around me everyday io every aspect of American Life, his side, the amoral side is winning....

That's all I have to say

..that's in its last throes, it's something we refer to as "Western Civilization."

And with a tad bit more help, it'll likely be homo sapiens making its farewell tour. And we'll take a lot more critters with us.

19. Beware's got it right. Apologies & regrets are empty if you don't atone.
I could piss on everybody when I'm in the full of life and then give a "sorry, wish I hadn'tna done that" when I'm dying of cancer and everybody's been nice to me. I don't revel in Atwater's death and I sure don't think, as some used to say, he "got what he deserved." But I don't buy deathbed conversions either when it's apologizing for a wrong you can't possibly undo. That's not atonement. That's just covering your ass in case God is just.
