Conclusion Reached After A Long Drive

I took a very long drive yesterday while looking for small stone quarys. I traveled country roads through western Maryland, south western Pennsylvania, and northern West Virginia over the course of about 6 hours. At one point the most recent sign of human activity, other than the tar-and-chip road I was on, had been a Mennonite Church, 8 miles back. The day went well and I found what I was looking for. I'll be going back next week.

This is the one thing I concluded after this breathtaking ride: The farther you can get from an Interstate Highway, in this country, the better off you are.

You won't see any real America until you're at least a mile from the Interstate. The Insterstate is now all fast national food chains - hell, even in most rest areas, like in Ohio, Ill, etc., it's all chain restaurants now.

Because Americans want to travel, but don't want to experience anything new or different. Nope, just give me McDonalds and KFC and Dunkin Fuckin' Donuts as I travel this great country, because local places might be really weird.

Fuck you, America! Get off your *#(*$^$% asses and explore a little bit! Fuck you!!

3. Agreed. Why were you looking for stone quarries?

We might have crossed paths yesterday. I drove out from NoVa to Martinburg, WV to Shepherdstown then across to Antietam and back down to Harper's Ferry.

5. I'm Doing Some Stone Work

I am just finishing up facing the block walls of a building I put up with local stone, gathered from an old strip job on our property. I am going to do the entire ground floor of our home in stone next and I am looking for a supply with somewhat consistant size, thickness, and color.

4. Check out Poolesville, MD sometime

Maybe 12 miles west of Potomac there's a Tibetan Buddhist temple that's open 24 hours a day (they've had a prayer vigil since '86) situated on about 100 acres of wildlife sanctuary. I love getting out to Harper's Ferry occassionally, too (especially on motorcycle, though I rarely ride anymore). :)
