Just added a Patriot Crab to the aquarium! YAY!

Patriot crab, Cardisoma armatum
This West African land crab lives along the ocean coast. A fussy burrow builder, it pushes and pulls sand with its large claws until the hole meets its specifications. It is a less discriminating eater, feeding mostly on vegetable matter but not passing up any meat that it might find while grazing.


My new crab is about about 3 inches across the body, and maybe 6 inches with the leg span.

Totally cool! They had one earlier this week in the tank at the store that about twice the size - wish I had bought that one, but at the time, I wasn't sure if I wanted a crab.

Oh, well.

1. I had hermit crabs for a while.

It was wild to see that they had moved from one shell to another overnight. But as pets, they weren't so great. Interesting habits though.

I had one for awhile, but he decided to make a break for it...never to be seen again. The cats claim they know nothing of this.

Somehow, I think he ended up as a latenight kitty hors d'oeuvres.
