You know what I hate about those new dance/modeling/rock star shows?
the ones where it's like American Idol and they are trying to win, and the judges are so-called experts?

It just convinces everybody in the whole friggun' universe that their opinion matters! That everyone is an expert.

They are NOT. Just because everybody or nearly everybody votes for somebody doesn't mean they are great. :(

 I'm losing it, I know, but I'm on a roll. :silly:

6. Popularity isn't a sign of value?
I don't know what I think of this. There are obviously people ahead of their time, there are underappreciated geniuses.... but, there is some value in having millions of people respond to something you do.

I think one reason people get a kick out of those shows because they feel like they're connected to something bigger than themselves. Which I guess is kind of what you said--they feel they have a role in whether someone goes back home to the farm, or goes on to be a big star. They live vicariously through them, in a way.

9. It's sad that the only way these people can feel connected is by voting
on AI. How about volunteering as a tutor for your local school, or volunteering at the local hospital, or on a campaign, or being a big brother/sister?

These things aren't valued because we have come to worship celeberities. And now, being a celeberity has become an attainable position for more and more people through reality tv and the fact that we let anyone get famous for doing anything--- case in point: Paris Hilton. What on earth has this woman done for humanity?

10. That's too small beans.
Being a celebrity fucking rocks. You make a lot of dough, get free stuff, wear great clothes, sleep with good looking rich people, go great places, etc. etc. etc. Bestowing that on someone, or feeling you helped them basically reach cultural nirvana probably feels good. Plus, you can talk about it to all your friends, who were also involved.

Helping someone empty the trash at the rec center? Not so much.

I think celebrity is tremendously important, LOL, but you're right. With the reality shows we have any Schlomo thinking they're hot stuff and worthy of attention and fame. Paris Hilton is a disgusting example of this.

11. Remember the reality show: Am I Hot or Not?
Lorenzo Lamas had one of those little laser pointers to point out what was wrong with people.

Funny, he never pointed it at their brains or to their self-esteem. It should have also been pointed at any and everyone involed with that shit.

8. I don't watch television, except for the odd episode of
The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy with my kid, so I'm not qualified to offer an opinion.

But from what I understand about those shows, I wouldn't watch them even if I were to get back into watching TV once in a while (which could happen any time; not watching televison is not a dogmatic thing with me, it's just habitual).
