NEW YORK -- A company that introduced computer users to the world of pop-up ads is launching a new service that will back away from the practice that has annoyed a lot of users and launched a host of programs aimed at blocking the ads.
The head of Claria Corp. says its new focus will be what are known as personalization ads --
in other words, ads that target Web surfers based on their online dealings.Co-founder Jeff McFadden said the pop-ups the company first began delivering through adware was just a stepping stone, while Claria awaited technology that would improve the practice of getting ads in front of people who might actually want the services or products being offered.
