Delivered by C-Section.

Whew LONG story. So those are the basics and the recap of the pregnancies threads are at the bottom.

We were called last Wednesday and told not to come in for the dilation process to be started-call at 6PM to see if there is a bed available. Oh great! Do we have to go to another hospital? Will our doctor be there???? We went to dinner and at 8:30 we got a call we got there at 9 PM. The administered the "tape" to start dilation. The next morning at 6 the started the induction.

Over the next hours the contractions started. My wife held on as long as she could (later determined to be a mistake) so that she didn't have to sit in the horribly uncomfortable bed (all the nurses agreed). Finally at 1 PM she got some pain killer and at 3PM the epidural was administered. She instantly said "I should have done this from the start". A lady in another Labor and Delivery room had decided to go "pioneer" due to a bad experience with an epidural in a previous pregnancy-what followed was a solid 30 minutes of language that made ME feel uncomfortable, I had heard all those words before but never in some of those combinations and definitely not in a such a flurry. WOW!

My wife was going along fine but just couldn't seem to dilate. Total effacement, contractions at the right increments but no dilation. Finally at 2AM our GREAT nurse rechecked her-it was going to need to be a C-Section. I had prepared myself (notoriously queasy stomach) by fully embracing the "bloody flow" visuals and participating in some of clean up. WOW!

Finally out came *GULP* our daughter. I really can't describe what went through me. She was perfect in every way ( scored a 9 on the APGAR after one minute a *10* after three minutes. Momma was pretty much out of it but she says she remembers seeing Josie's face for the first time.

No picture on the hospital website yet but she has a FULL HEAD OF HAIR-already it is over her ears and it looks to be stylistically razor cut in the back-reddish/brown with blonde highlights. All the nurses comment on how pretty she is and about her hair.

She had a bit of jaundice so they had to put her on the "light table" photo therapy crib but they took her out today.


Momma is doing okay but really hurting from a lack of sleep-feeding every 2-3 hours depending on time of day. I am doing okay. I just came home to feed the kitties again, cut the grass, and get everything ready for Josie's coming home tomorrow.

Remember too (my soapbox: as I had c-sections), she's also recovering from major surgery and if she's breastfeeding too, she's going to be pooped for awhile. You need to be on full diaper duty, dad and bring her whatever she needs. You'll be up to it! It's life-changing, but you'll fall in love with this little person (even if she deprives you sleep) like no one else ever before.

I was induced and I also failed to dilate. I had my child via c-section for the same reason.
It's pretty common now. And the babies usually look prettier right away after a c-section (not so squashed-looking).

Congrats to you and your wife and baby Josie. And let her know that healing from a c-section isn't as bad as you think it will be. After they took me off of my drip from surgery I didn't even need Tylenol for the pain(it was more of a tugging rather than any real pain). And the feedings-those are not fun. My daughter was every hour. Breast milk didn't fill her.


Get some sleep right now. You have many sleepless nights ahead!
