Tell me about Maine, Vermont, and NH

I am going later this month, and I want to know where to go and what to see.

Suggestions?

1. There's no place NOT to see

The Maine coast is beautiful. The interior of Maine is gorgeous. In New Hampshire, highly recommend the White Mountains area and Lake Winnepesauki (probably spelled wrong) - nice area, lots to do.

Vermont is the prettiest place in the universe (can you tell I'm from Vermont?). Get off the highways, travel through the villages, meander down a dirt road. Woodstock is nice but touristy - Grafton is nice and less touristy.

It's all wonderful - I live in California now which I love but I go home every year because I need to see Vermont - not the people I miss but the place.

on my last trip to New England (cough cough Dean campaign cough) was the utter lack of street signs. Makes actually following said directions pretty tricky.

I live in the mid-coast/beginning of the downeast region.

I recommend seeing: Portland, Camden, Castine, Deer Isle-Stonington (Nervous Nellie's and Haystack are not to be missed) , and Bar Harbor

8. Don't miss Mt Dessert Island and Acadia National Park

Bar Harbor is there, too. Actually, there's no place in Maine I wouldn't visit. I've loved every part I've visited.

so I'm definitely going there.

I'm flying into Manchester NH and I was thinking of driving up the coast, then cutting inland and checking out VT and NH a little.

12. You'll learn what "can't get there from here" means

if you try to go from Maine to New Hampshire to Vermont. Most high speed roads are on a North/South axis. Traveling west from Maine will take you through beautiful country but it's not that fast.
If you want to see a beautiful bit of the White Mountains, head west out of Maine on Route 2 through Grafton Notch. The notch has interesting geological features just off the road and it's just west of the town of Bethel where there are shops and places to eat. Once in NH you'll be in the heart of the Presidential Range.
Alternatively, exit Maine via Route 302 and drive the Kancamagus Hwy (Rt. 112) to Lincoln. It is a gorgeous ride through lower elevation peaks. There's a major swimming hole too, and nothing commercial for 40 miles. Once you get to Lincoln you'll have interstate access again.
Acadia is beautiful especially away from the madding crowds. One tourist spot worth experiencing is Thunder Hole.

16. Oh, then you'll do just fine.

New England roads have better shoulders than CA roads. The street signage difference is pretty funny. When people visit me out here they get CONFUSED by the proliferation of street name signs, especially those mid-block on the median ones announcing the next intersection.

Coastal Californians look at the map and think everything in Northern New England is close because the mileage is so low, but they have that freeway mentality. I am constantly reminding them that most roads in ME/NH/VT are local roads through town centers and it just takes time.

White Mountains National Forest.

In particular Franconia Notch...see the Flume...climbe Mt Lafayette if you're up for such things.

And the Caribou-Speckle Mountain wilderness area (part of WMNF in Maine) it's a less traveled and more isolated part of the WMNF and well worth the visit.

some of the most beautiful scenery in the whole world up there. My whole family is going on vacation near North Conway in about 2 weeks. I however am not, I have to go back to school

14. Burlington and Lake Champlaign. Stay at the Wyndham

which is on a bluff overlooking the lake, and only 3 or 4 blocks from downtown Burlington. Beautiful, esp. in the summer with the breeze off the lake. Lovely, lovely, lovely! :hi:

Skowhegan, Bangor, Fort Kent, Rumford, Kingfield, Troy, Chine (and S. China) all fit the bill.

I expect a certain level of baseline knowledge among intellent people, you know? that's like advising people against buying real estate in Centralia, PA, if you don't know enough not to, it'll be a good learning experience for you. experiental education, the wave of the future.
