*sigh* In real life ... I'm trying to wrap up construction jobs in this old house, some of them were started 2 years ago. I'm not getting too nuts about it but I'd like to see completion even if I have to do it myself.

Also I need to get a few quotes on having roofing tiles removed and replaced before this winter. But first ... I really do need to go out there & buy a wood stove.

I had 8 sets of sliding glass doors replaced two summers ago which helped but my battle to bring the cost of living here down is ongoing. I'm seriously planning to install solar panels & if possible windmills within the next few years.

58. Solar panels are a very good idea, IMHO...

but you do need a certain number of sunny days. I don't know if there's a threshold, but you could probably find that out...A lot of folks out here in California are going to those to get off the grid, and a few can actually sell electricity back to the power companies!

I have bitched for years about the intense sun that hits this house because the old that must have provided so much shade was killed by lightning many years ago ... I just had most of the old trunk finally cut down two or three weeks ago because it looked as if it was about to topple over.

It's very windy almost everyday. The air currents come down off a nearby mountain. I actually do plan to sell power back to the grid.

Is this an evil thing? I say no, to a lesser extent, but yes, in practice. It is, however, one of the staples of capitalism.

The problem arises when there is a massive company getting millions per month in interest from a bunch of people who cannot afford it.

I've never seen "interest" discussed on DU. Yet, it is so important.

Maybe I just missed it?

is a fascinating portrait of Tim Treadwell, who lived with Alaska's grizzlies for 13 summers. Composed mostly of Treadwell's own work, Werner Herzog used scenes from more than 100 hours of tape.

It's a mixed bag, and definitely not for children and some adults, but charming and scary in its own way. Tim broke the boundaries of human to bear contact. But, there's no free lunch in nature, as Tim learned. (He and his girlfriend come to a tragic end...)

98. Yes, Timothy Treadwell and his girlfriend Amy, were killed by a

bear in 2003. This attractive young blond haired man, very pleasant to look at, wanted to be an actor, but Hollywood rejected him, as it does so many others. Tim struggled with drugs and alcohol in his youth. He was disaffected, and turned to the Alaskan wilderness where he retreated for thirteen summers.

Observation tells us that he was probably an undiagnosed and untreated manic depressive; a sensitive individual who erroneously came to believe that by his presence, he was "protecting and defending" the bears, when in fact, they needed no protection, as the film points out. In his obvious delusion, he seems to be trying to enter the bears world and become one with them. His behavior is outrageous -- but this is mental illness. Personally, I have struggled with clinical depression off and on since age 19. It's no picnic...

The movie is edited from his actual tapes, so you see his encounters with bears and foxes -- it is amateurish footage, very theatrical as he does "take after take" as a director might. The result is sometimes astounding and charming, and also supremely tragic all at once, because we know the ending.

The film is rated "R" and certainly not appropriate for children at all. Some adults may also find it both uplifting in some respects but also extremely disturbing. There are fascinating interviews with his parents, friends, and one ex-girlfriend. (The woman who was with him on the last venture avoids the camera; her parents refused to be interviewed for this venture, so we know nothing about her at all.)

This film won a documentary award at the Sundance Film Festival. Werner Herzog is the director.
