Speaking of animal cruelty...

A woman's dog got loose the other day. Animal control picked up the dog. She went there to pick up the dog the same exact day. It hadn't even been 8 hours. They had already put the dog to sleep. Talk about being outraged. I am sure she will seek some type of legal recourse. I am extremely pissed.

old kitty that her neighbors thought was a sickly stray and they put him down. Didn't even ask around who he might have belonged to.

So they meant well but.. that really destroyed my goddess mother. He'd been her baby for a very long time.

where was this? One of our dogs got picked up by animal control, but luckily Seattle has a no-kill shelter. Now he (and our other dog) are microchipped.

This happened to my sister's next door neighbor. She came home unexpectedly one Friday afternoon only to find a neighbor in her back yard, her Border Collie dying and thrown in a garbage bag after being shot with a gun with a silencer.

14. that's awful, I grew up out in the country, we had many dogs murdered by

neighbors. It's awful. One neighbor shot three of our dogs and left them all out to suffer. One of them, crawled home, it took her three days. The others didn't make it, but this one survived. Poor thing, the vet did a good job and saved her.

And that is fucking awful. I had a border collie and they are amazing dogs. How anyone could be so callous as to shoot one, especially with a silencer, amazes me. That's seriously fucked up.

6. that is terrible.... the resources these county/municipal shelters

receive is pathetic and often (I can only speak for our local shelter) the compassion the staff has for animals is very questionable. My wife volunteers for our shelter quite a bit and she works very hard to help the animals but she gets so frustrated at the negligence of the staff.

11. It's important to have licenses and microchips

that way the shelter is more likely to hold on to them. And the licensing fee helps the shelters get revenue. I have a friend who is the most law-abiding person you would ever meet in other ways, but for some reason, she didn't license her first cat. Her current cat is licensed but only because she adopted it throug PAWS and they made her. I bet she won't renew it, either.

But my dogs have their rabies tag on and a tag with phone numbers on it. I want my dogs back if they ever get out!

that there are 3 major makers of pet identification microchips and countless other smaller makers and that they are not standardized so it depends which reader (if any) the humane society has. I will look for info on this and update this post when I find it...


update: It looks like some brands do use universal technology and some don't, so make sure you research the company before you buyu....

Micro chipping is a great way to permanently identify your dog. There are several brands of microchip available. Some of the companies have deliberately made their chips unreadable by other companies' scanners. They did this in an effort to "corner the market" and make it so that everyone would have to use their brand of chip. Other companies have made their chips so that they could be readable by any machine, and have scanners which will identify the existence of another brand of chip in the dog's body. The AVID micro chip is one of these companies, and this is the one I have in all my dogs. This is not a "paid professional announcement"--it is just my personal endorsement, based on the fact that it seems that this company is more concerned with reuniting people with their lost pets than it is with "cornering the market."

The drawback with micro chipping is that the microchip is invisible. This is why you should also have your dog wear a tag on his collar, mentioning that he has been micro chipped, and containing backup identification information. Another aspect is the cost. Micro chipping can be done for as cheaply as $5. per dog at a clinic, to $35. per dog at your veterinarian's office. I was lucky enough to have my dogs done at a chipping clinic at a sled dog racer, and saved $300. (on ten dogs). The registration of the chip is included in the fee. If you move, you must send your change of address information to the registering company. The final drawback is that, unfortunately, not all humane societies and shelters have one of the scanners to identify the chips. And, the fact that most of these chip manufacturers are not working together on this, and require their own separate reader, makes it necessary to keep several brands on hand. The readers are usually donated FREE OF CHARGE to shelters. Breeders and kennel owners with large numbers of dogs can buy them at a low cost.

15. you should help her get her story out. it would serve multiple purposes

1. Shame the animal shelter (it sounds like they need it)
2. Get a chance for the animal shelter tell the public "it's a resource problem"
3. Remind the public about the animal population problem and the importance of adoption.

28. That is so bizarre.

Where I live the animals usually stay at the pound for weeks, even if they have proven to be dangerous. Then they get sent to other agencies for possible adoption, if not direct from the pound.

The pound even had about a five hundred pound tortoise there last I checked.

Sounds like someone needs to be taught a legal lesson. Usually they wait at least a week here for the owner to show up.
