Poll question: Worst decade for music

What's the worst decade of music in your opinion?

I'd have to say it was the 70's for me.

EDIT: THIS POLL IS NOT A SCIENTIFIC POLL. THE ARTISTS MENTIONED ARE ONLY EXAMPLES AND DO NOT REFLECT THE WHOLE DECADE. Geez.....

1. Gotta say now...

The 1970s had their ups and downs, but the mass commercialization of music occurred during the 1980s. MAINSTREAM/pop music has continued to drop in quality ever since.

I haven't heard much that I care for either....I kinda stick to the classic rock myself.

2. There was a whole other side to the 70s

Led Zep, Floyd, King Crimson, prog rock, etc.

3. I'd have to agree, the 1970s

It seems that the music industry's pendulum swung back a little too far after the 1960s "sex and drugs" motif. I just don't much of value came out of the 1970s with disco leading the way. It also seems to me that electronics--real electronics meaning electronic music--was still in it's infancy and as such prone to abuse and overuse, creating cliches and :eyes:

I don't think it improved much, but then, I don't think the music industry has really done much since WWII.

4. Elvis started in the 50's

And that's when he did much of his good work.

You left out a LOT of artists. What about those who didn't get a lot of airplay? Well, Woody didn't...

For a while in the 60's, it was possible to hear some of the best rock, soul & R&B on AM radio. During other eras, more research may have been required. Much of the 70's was pop tripe but there were some fine artists out there. Buying odd records & seeing live shows certainly expanded my horizons.

Of popular music of the decade. It would be IMPOSSIBLE for me to list ALL the artists of their time. This is not a very scientific poll. Sorry.

5. The 70's were not all disco

Some of the best rock and roll came out in the 70's - most people think of it as 60's music but if anything, it was very late 60's and early 70's - Led Zeppelin, Bad Company, Queen, Pink Floyd...

Disco was a flash in the pan.

21. Some of the best Iron Maiden came out of the early 80's

The 80's weren't all bad.

I'll never understand the transformation of David Coverdale. HOW THE HELL did he go from being a respectable singer for late model Deep Purple to the poster boy for cheesy hair bands???

I could name a million artists I enjoy from today.

Worst time? I'd say middle to late 90s. Too many boy bands, too much rap, too much rap/metal, too much dance/pop a la Britney, too many country artists (I like country, but it got overcrowded,) and too many Creeds.

20. The late 90's for sure sucked bad

but I think it's something we're just pulling out of now.

All the bands I enjoy today (APC, Modest Mouse, Radiohead) have been around since the mid-90's.

10. *gasp* - the 70's!

the Ramones, the New York Dolls, the Sex Pistols, the Damned, the Clash.... all that great punk music coming out of London and New York! Not to mention a renewed interest in reggae music by those outside of Jamaica!

14. It terms of mainsteram music- today, no doubt.

It seems pop music has turned a corner over the last year or so. There's a lot of great bands that have found mainstream appeal in this decade, like Queens of the Stone Age, the Killers, Franz Ferdinand and the White Stripes. Still, the death of teen pop and nu-metal has been an extrememly slow one, especially since the Clear Channel-dominated terrestrial radio seems to think thats all the general public wants to listen to. Satellite radio is really starting to make an impact, which is a good thing. All in all, though, between whiny nu-metal, highly stylized pop punk and hip-hop that has lost its message and edge, this has been a pretty crappy decade for popular music.

19. The 80s

I know there was some good music, but all in all it was the worst for me. There is always good music out there, but it's the stuff that is saturating the industry that I go by. The 80s were a total drag in the industry.

the Eagles, CSN&Y, ELP, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, the best stuff from Pink Floyd, and so on and so on...

And Warren Zevon, and Jackson Brown, and The Tubes, and all the southern rock bands, and all the country outlaws, and David Bowie's most productive period, etc, etc, etc...
