I'm actually going there for the birding, and any sightseeing or pub-crawling is incidental to the birding. Shorebirds, seabirds, warblers, other landbirds.... I'm all over it.

Scarborough Marsh sanctuary (near Portland) can be a real gold mine for bird sightings.
Your friend may have told you this already, but Mt. Desert is pretty good in the birding department too -- low flying bald eagles!
