I genuinely want to understand why it is necessary for us (I see many of my DU friends in this thread) to post publicly about suspected trolls and disrupters, whether they are active members or recently banned members.

There is so much else to talk about here, from the political forums, which theoretically is what brought most of us here, to the fun and silliness of the Lounge, which I've always thought of as just a place to decompress from time to time.

I know it is human nature to have fun hashing this stuff out, just as office or school gossip is fun, whether we like to admit it or not. But from where I sit, it just doesn't seem to be very helpful to DU or to discussion overall here, whether serious or silly, political or otherwise. I won't go into a long diatribe about rules and the work of volunteer moderators and the admins, though I certainly could. I honestly don't get it, rules or no rules. It is mean-spirited and useless, IMHO.

and dancing on the grave of, laughing at, or scorning recently banned disruptors is theraputic (on some base emotional level).

Also, it gives people a chance to find out if OTHERS felt the same way, or if others were fooled as well. That way, the person who was deceived can take solice and comfort in the fact the he wasn't the only person who fell for the disruptor's act.

there are some people who join DU to post blatantly ridiculous (racist/sexist/homophobic) crap. i'm not sure if it's an attempt to make the rest of the membership look bad by association, or if it's just an attempt to taunt us until they inevitably (usually) get banned. but it is so terribly obvious sometimes, and for the most part we sit on our hands or just hit alert repeatedly. so when they are finally banned, there is a huge sense of relief.

the kind of troll you're talking about very rarely lives past 25 posts, and they're usually caught before 10. We don't give them time to make so many posts that the board is disrupted and everyone celebrates when they're gone. when someone starts posting baltlantly freeperish crap, we get in a ton of alerts and we ban them. The troublesome ones are subtle, and quite often develop friends that regret when they are gone.

I've always thought of that as the classic troll MO. You act like an ass, get banned, and then laugh at everyone running around like headless chickens. You get an instant 15 minutes of fame. It's exactly what the troll aims for.

It's been my experience that in most cases a much better punishment is when a troll gets banned and nobody even notices. That wouldn't be the result I'd want if *I* was a troll. Just my 2c.
