6. More opimization is put into Windows games natively...
Many Linux games fare well, but some are better under Windows. Like Doom3, FWIW.

get back to doing useful things instead of cluttering your 3D rendered abstract desktop of a planet halfway submerged in a green ocean with notepads and calculators and weather charts and the MANDATORY 20% opacity console.

and then post it on photobucket for everyone to see

7. Linux powers DU
and will as long as I have a say in the matter. :)

My professional opinion is that for running servers and for programming environments, nothing can compete with linux.

For gaming/home applications, linux still has some ground to make up.

13. Sure, but that's what makes it's security superior
I personally do *not* trust the developers at Microsoft with my security. Linux is able to be far more secure because you have the power in your hands, all you have to do is read some webpages/books and spend some time dedicated to learning how to do it.

In the end it is more work, but if security is your concern, it sure beats leaving it in the hands of Microsoft (whose track record on security is laughable).

18. Out of box security is better than Windows.
Of course you have the power to enable stuff to defeat that security. But you also have the power to add more layers to it.

28. Not anymore-- Windows 2005 server is supposedly the most secure
out of the box-- but that's because EVERYTHING is locked down on it-- you can't get access to a damned thing unless you set it that way.

Of course, what good is a room that you can't get into, because all the doors and, erm, windows, are locked?

Although I'm a *BSD fan, Linux still kicks MS's butt for internet applications.

9. No, you're at least half right
I just started running Linux, and while it's a very good OS, the bad things about it are killers.

First, if you're a newbie, and try to install it as a double-boot system (giving you a choice of Windows or Linux), you have to become an expert in boot sequencing, or you're hosed. In fact, you may be hosed anyway.

Second, try as they might, they still can't touch Microsoft's two killer apps -- Visual Basic and MS Office. And most of the development tools suck, too, though there are some good ones finally emerging.

Third, Linux culture is so geekly that most people won't be able to even so much as use the help systems.

Considering that Gates is trying so hard to destroy Visual Basic, Office, and the Windows user base, you would think Linux developers would be spending more time making the system friendly. Except for a few, they aren't. I would personally take this on as my own contribution, but I am still early in my learning curve.

Linux has tremendous potential. It's still a few years away from being ready for out-of-the box usability for computerphobes. But it is worth keeping up with, because it won't suck forever, and in the long run, Gates' ass is grass.

17. I am an IT Consultant. I won a Microsoft Achievement Award
for dicovering that some users could not get internet access with Norton System Works. I also found a security flaw in the Microsoft AntiSpyware within twenty-fours after it came out. And I have just discovered a new virus which had evaded all the security software on my systems; it will be confirmed shortly.

Next?

21. Ubuntu? Ha!
Edited on Tue Aug-02-05 02:59 PM by Pigwidgeon
That's the distro I use.

And it's an excellent distro, a Debian fork. It's one of Mark Shuttlesworth's non-profit efforts.

The problem remains: a newbie is up the creek if s/he wants to configure a dual-boot system.

I'm a programmer, and even I had problems. The way I load it now is to get to a GRUB prompt and hand-enter the boot sequence, since the boot script is invisible, for some reason.

Now, I really like Linux. But for a non-technical person, it's a minefield. And that's got to change, because the way it is now, for most newbies, it's "The Cathedral and the Bizarre."

22. RH and SuSE, and a few others auto configure multiboot.
As long as windows is preinstalled, the distro installer knows windows it there, modifies the boot track for GRUB, and adds Windows and Linux to the list of boot options.

23. You still have to watch out with the Linux boot loader. It is
very easy to mess up. I've done it a couple of times. *Make sure to read the manual very carefully!*

24. Been there, done that
Read the manual. Studied the manual. Put the manual under my pillow and slept on the manual.

First time out, I destroyed my MBR. Fortunately, under Windows 2000, I was able to restore it with Rescue Console from a copy it keeps.

That wouldn't have been so bad, if it had overwritten it with the GRUB MBR -- but it didn't. In fact, it fired an error at Stage 1.5, so I assume the MBR overwrite went as planned.

Now, I boot off a floppy of GRUB and do the sequence (kernel, initrd, boot) manually -- typing it in. A little more trouble, but it works, and doesn't threaten Win2k.

This is the kind of thing that a newbie will seriously panic over. All it does is alienate a potential Linux user, and makes money for MS and the Best Buy "Geek Squad".

26. Why do you blame Linux for the difficulty configuring a dual-boot system?
try installing XP (or any Window$ product) on a system with an existing OS. Do you get an option to dual boot.

Why do people spend all this time ripping Linux and the FOSS movement in general while giving the monopolists a pass?
