even if you really want to see the movie?

If I want to see a movie, I'll go regardless.

or however the hell his stupid name is spelled.

And I never will.

Usually, Repukes who make movies make movies that I don't want to see anyway.

He's a hell of an actor and director, one of the best, but he's also a selfish curmudgeon who mainly opposes "big government" for his own personal reasons. Read about how he went ballistic over putting in a wheelchair ramp at a hotel he owned. You'll have to Google for the details.

48. I think he is much more representative of the average American voter...
...than Coulter or Limbaugh or any of the freepers. Sadly, I think his self-interested view of the free market and any regulations or unionizing that may interfere with his ability to make a buck mirrors how a large part of the "silent majority" feels, and the Repugs have managed to tap into that.

Edited on Tue Aug-02-05 03:33 PM by tjdee
This goes back to what I was saying in another thread.

Clint's films have all the ingredients, all the technical parts that add up to "good movie"...but they lack oomph or heart somehow. Lots of people disagree with me, LOL. And he is very liberal in some ways, too, so I'm not sure it's a Republican thing.

And that's Clint as a director. Clint as an actor blows IMO. I think he's got one face: angsty.

Mel...if he's a Republican that would be a surprise to me.

to let her watch Rambo while we were in a hotel together. It was before we married.

Even my kids know about this fight and I have sworn, should she ever wish to watch Rambo, I will not interfere. Sometimes when the issue (which she still insists was a reflection of my "controlling" personality) I offer to go out and rent the movie.

She really doesn't want to watch it though.

I have learned to relax a little.

Recently, I bought a movie with the senile old nutcase Charlton Heston in it. It was Branaugh's Hamlet. Actually the old nut was pretty good in the role, but I felt weird watching Heston, I must admit.

I also watched Being John Malkovitch, but I didn't realize at that time that Malkovitch was a neocon. I actually liked that movie too, although Malkovitch himself was only a small part of the movie.

Mostly, I skip 'em though.

Not Brando or Deniro, mind you, but still good. He gets flamed because of his Die Hard roles, and people ignore some of the more interesting things he's done, like the films you mention. Also, Death Becomes Her, The Kid, and Unbreakable.

56. And Bruce Willis was in The Siege
It may have seemed like a mediocore film when it was first released, but watch it today and you will see that it was ahead of it's time. It has striking parallels with the post 9/11 racist police state we seem to be moving into right now.

Anyone who rejects this movie because a Republican is in it would be missing out on a movie that if it were released today would be viewed as a very anti-Bush regime film.

61. No, if I did that there would be a few great movies I would have missed
Not very many of course, because as several have already pointed out most Republican actors suck. But Bruce Willis, although he is not a great actor, was in a couple really good movies. If anyone has not seen The Siege they should really watch it because it parallels what is happening in this country right now better than almost any other movie out there.

Also Robert Duvall was in Network, one of the greatest films of all time, and it was a film that actually had a very progressive anti-corporate message. Anyone who would refuse to watch that movie just because a Republican happens to have a role in it would be missing out on a great film.

Tim Robbins and Sean Penn, two of the great progressive Hollywood actors, starred in a movie directed by Clint Eastwoood. The right wing boycotted that movie because of Penn and Robbins, it would have been stupid for us to boycott it because of Eastwood.

I won't spend my money on films that are blatantly promoting right-wing propaganda, but I will not boycott a film just because of the actor or director of that film.

64. No
It seems nearly impossible to know the political leanings of all major actors and actresses for one thing, and boycotting a movie based on an actor's or actress's politics seems like a sort of protest that would have a miniscule amount of effect. Boycotting based on a right-wing message in the movie itself, perhaps (though I wouldn't want to restrict myself from viewing even in that situation if the movie might actually be worth watching despite its message) but boycotting based on the actor's or actress's politics that may not even come into play in the movie doesn't seem worth it.

Besides, the bulk of Hollywood 'pugs seem to be white males who do mostly action movies, which are about my least favorite genre of film anyway so it's not particularly hard to avoid them.

I'm a bit surprised about Vince Vaughn, though. I'm not sure exactly why I am but for some reason I just didn't see him as a 'pug. And I just saw Wedding Crashers today and liked it...

65. I'm very open minded - I'll see anything
I don't think that artists or actors should be punished for their political, relgious, or philosophical beliefs. In fact, during the Vietnam War, despite the fact that I protested it, I went to see John Wayne in the Green Berets. The film was blatant propaganda and extremely deluded, but I wanted to see the slant of the movie on the war. I would hope that conservatives would go see a political movie like Fahrenheit 9/11 or even a pure entertainment film with Jane Fonda (she was one of the world's most beautiful women in her youth). I would like to live in a society where all sides of an issue are examined openly and the viewing public develops the habit of seeking full exposure to all points of view. Unfortunately, the right tends not to admire openness and the terrible blacklists during the 1950s of Hollywood writers and actors for merely associating with groups having unpopular ideas is a shame upon the face of America. Although he stunk as an actor, I'll watch "Bedtime For Bonzo". I'll watch "The High And The Mighty" (but not "The Conqueror" as I almost die laughing at John Wayne's terrible performance). I might boycott CNN or Faux's corporate sponsors, but I won't boycott an individual simply earning a living who might have a point of view 180 degrees away from my own.

and you can sit through "The Greatest Story Ever Told", a boring religious epic from the 60's, check out John Wayne's "performance" as a Roman Centurion in charge of Christ's Crucifixion - it's a real hoot - talk about piss poor casting!

67. Depends on the film and the actor.
Most right-leaning actors may choose to take roles that are more tailored to their own beliefs, so probably not in that respect. On the flip, there's a ton of lib actors/actresses who I don't care for in the least. It all depends.

81. Agreed
as I stated above, Heston made some great films, both epics and science fiction. I think you can enjoy his films on a purely entertainment level, without turning repuke, or running out to join the N.R.A.

71. I'll see them, but I won't pay to see them. I rented Nick Cage's last film
Edited on Wed Aug-03-05 12:39 AM by norml
If I have a free video rental coupon and I'm stuck for something better to rent I might get something to watch that was done by a Bush bot, but not if I can help it.

When such entertainment comes on TV if I watch I take note of who's sponsoring it so as to try to avoid shopping there.

The last thing I saw which would qualify was National Treasure with Nicolas Cage.

Though Cage backed Gore in 2000, he backed Bush in 2004 and spoke out in favor of him.

The movie was anticlimatic and boring.

Cage's acting was wooden and low key to the point of being comatose.

I had to use the free coupon before the end of the month so I suppose I don't regret renting it too much.

75. Not intentionally
it's more in the vein of me bypassing material I'm not interested in (too shallow, too violent for no good plot reason are the usual reasons) then later I find out they are repubs. Then I think "Oh, no wonder I wasn't interested."

76. I think so.
There are so few of 'em that i doubt I'm missing much, but I will avoid known Repubs. Schwarzenegger, for instance, whose work I've enjoyed, is off limits.

Then again, I haven't seen a new release of his in many years, so it's no loss.

and manage to right piss me off, I will avoid them (Patricia Heaton springs to mind).

83. Only if they can't act.
John Malkovich is one of the few exceptions to this I can think of; Gary Oldman (who is consevative, but not Republican...he's a Tory, being British) is another.

84. I know he's not in movies (has he been ?)
but I stopped watching Drew Carey after all that shit he dumped on Clinton - it just offended me no end.

Patricia Heaton's another one (even though I never watched "Everybody Loves Raymond" - I just didn't think it was funny) - she's so pro-Bush it makes my teeth hurt.

from going if it was a movie that I really wanted to see. However, this would not be the case for someone who is an over-the-top Republican. For example, if Ann Coulter were an actress, I wouldn't see her movies regardless of how good the movie s were. I don't think that I'll go to any more Mel Gibson movies.

The fact that the actor is a Republican does take a little bit away from my ability to enjoy the movie.
