I just got sad news
A friend of mine died of a heroin overdose two nights ago.

I didn't know him well, but I'm still sort of shocked by it.

I don't understand how people can do drugs like that, and throw their lives away.

It's such a waste.

5. So sorry for your loss...
I don't know what to say...

I lost someone to drugs earlier this year... if only we treated drug abuse as the health problem it is, and not a crime. :(

10. My heart goes out to you
From someone who had a bit too much fun with sniff sniff in the 80's, let me say it's incredibly easy for someone who's intelligent and has the world ahead of him to give in to a drug.

First time you try "that drug" you want to repeat that experience again and again. Problem is, the second and third time are NEVER like the first...and when you realize that it's too late.

The availability of cheap, high-purity heroin is such a scary problem because it's everywhere, and people you'd never imagine touching the stuff are getting hooked. It's a sad day when a young person like this falls victim to it...

12. I don't get it either.
My son's father's family has many alcoholics who are also either coke or herion addicts. His father (my ex) was murdered by his brother-in-law during a drunken fight where both had been doing other drugs as well. Both men were fine people when sober, but their addictions stripped away their sense until they were left with one dead and the other a murderer.

I think living in this fucked up world is just too hard on some people. Easier to cover the pain than to face it. Which only leads to more pain... vicious circle.

My brother was (really is, just not active) drug addict and alcoholic. He's just damned lucky to be alive today. After seeing what they did to him I'm glad I just dabbled a little with smoking dope years ago.

Heroin is a real beast, I've never known anybody to get off of it permanently. The people I've known who were on it were some of the nicest people I've ever known too. Just so tragic, sorry for your loss.

39. I'm very sorry to hear that. It's tough to understand. I lost the best
friend I've ever had to heroin. He died nine years ago as of next month. He was one of the smartest people I've known. It is such a waste of what should be a terrific life. I still sometimes think about all the things he's missed, he never got to meet my son or even little things like the last Star Wars movie. It's kind of silly but years ago when we were in high school we promised no matter where we were we would see the new Star Wars movies when they came out, I cried for a couple minutes during the movie.

Heroin is a horrible drug and I've never known anyone to get free of it. I've lost several other friends to heroin, they are not dead but their lives have been destroyed for years, occasionally I'll hear something about them and it's never good. I can't even watch any movies with heroin users in them, it just upsets me too much.

I am very sorry for your loss.

40. I got an email from a friend with more details
It's too grim to share, but he had been clean for a year so he probably miscalculated the dosage. He was at his dad's house, and his dad found him the next morning. The coroner said he probably just went to sleep and didn't wake up.

He will be cremated and his ashes scattered over the Pacific.
