Why do some mothers think their sons are god?

A mother and college age son work in my office. He will be going back to college sometime soon, before we get to implement a project he was involved in. I told him he could come back the day we implemented it- for the experience, so he could put it on his resume- if he wanted to. I have no control over whether he would be paid for his time or not, and its just a few hours.

I don't NEED him to do this, I was offering him an opportunity. His mother confronted me about it a few hours later. He understood that I was giving him an opportunity, but she saw it as exploiting him and told him not to come back unless it was on the clock.

1. Because they have low self-esteem, their cranky shrews, and otherwise

can't differentiate between their sons and themselves.

Sometimes, they're just ignorant weasels.

Sometimes, they're just stupid fucks.

But mostly, they can't see reality at all, they think their children are the center of the fuckin' universe, they think that they and only they have created the perfect spawnage ever in the history of the world and everyone else should just go fuck themselves.

These are the kinds of mothers who, when their adult age children get a reprimand at their place of professional employment, will call their boss to complain.

3. He's too old to be discussing stuff like this with her

He's 24- and he "gets" the fact that even with a technical degree, its hard to get a job without work experience. The first job is the hardest. So an opportunity to participate in creating a system that will actually be used in a corporation is worth a hell of a lot towards your first job... But maybe she thinks HER SON can skip past that.

7. I had an employees mother call me once

The employee was a woman fresh out of college, and a royal PIA. When told she'd have to work a holiday just like everyone else, she told her mother who called and chewed me out. I can't imagine my parents calling my boss.

2. Maybe she experiences the office differently than you do

I don't know what she, he and you do at work, but sometimes a very good lesson to teach your kid is not to give away your labor. That doesn't appear to apply here, but I thought I'd give the counterpoint to Rabrrrrr's post.
