I swear my house is haunted
Long story short, I have lived here for 14 years. I have heard every noise this house makes and every noise that happens in our neighborhood. I'm going through a divorce and living here (in a room in the basement) while trying to sell the place. I'm living here pretty much alone (the ex and our kids spend the night once in awhile as they are fixing up my ex's new townhome and moving). Now and for the last 7 months, I'm sleeping in a room in the basement directly underneath the master bedroom. For years, this has been a den/office and I've spent many, many nights down here, so I’m familiar with the usual noises. What I’m hearing now is different.

The first few years we lived here (ah! happier times), we had some odd experiences here--nothing scary, just odd things seen from out of the corner of our eyes, unexplainable smells and the occasional cold spot. We'd hear occasional footsteps, smell an unusual very sweet floral perfume in odd places, sometimes hear indistinct voices and see what seemed to be an elderly woman walking in a couple of different places in the house. Most of that had subsided over the last ten years or so, with only an occasional incident and nothing at all for a few years. Again, it's never been frightening or alarming, just odd.

Since the rest of the family started sleeping at their new place a couple of weeks ago, I've been hearing some odd things, most notably footsteps in the room upstairs. Not amibiguous creaks or anything--I'm talking clear, thumping floor-squeaking footsteps walking across the floor right over my head! I also hear sighs, like someone is kind of contended. Several times, I was so sure someone else was in the house, I rushed upstairs. But there is no one there. Also my dog does not bark or even seem to notice. She goes berserk if anyone even comes into the yard or to the door.

I am hearing these footsteps or other noises upstairs three or four times a day and just yesterday, I got a whiff of the perfume for the first time in years and years.

I swear I am not crazy. Or am I? Anybody else living with ghosts?

6. nothing like that
I have seen, and my ex-wife and my daughter when she was about 7 or 8 or so saw an elderly woman, wearing a flowered cotton dress walking through the living room along a wall where there would pretty much always have been furniture. We all saw the figure out of the corner of our eyes and from three or four different viewing perspectives. "She" was always kind of washed-out or insubstantial looking and when we'd look directly at "her" there was nothing there. I'd guess we saw "her" ten or twelve times during the first three or four years we lived here and only once since. I haven't seen anything unusual recently, just heard things and smelled the perfume twice now. Even when we first moved in, I never heard anything nearly as distinct as the footsteps. I heard them just a few minutes before my OP.

Nothing has been scary about this, except the few times I thought someone was in the house. Maybe I should be scared. I don't know.

13. Yes kind of
Years ago I was living in a small apartment my boyfriend and I saw a cloud rolling, yellowish, blueish, rise out of the living room floor (no the cloud was not what we were smoking) the cloud had an ozone-electrical smell about it it hung there for about a minute and disappeared. After that things like a box of matches would flip up into the air, no joking-we found out later that a 2 year old girl had died in the apartment a year earlier.

all my other recording equipment is in storage or in a temporary studio space, not here.

I don't have enough memory to record for long and the built-in mic is pretty weak.

41. Cripes, that image is freaky
Not the blob, but the faces; something so distorted about one and distressed and "undead"-looking about the other. If it's "real," well, that sucks. If it's fake, someone should parlay that talent into film.

2. I'm not living with ghosts, but you might consider
"smudging" (lighting a bundle of dried herbs, usually sage is the chief component) the rooms in your house to dispel any sort of negative vibes. If you don't feel threatened though, probably best to leave well enough alone.

You also might want to check with your realtor to find out whether or not it is a legal requirement that you disclose that the house is haunted to prospective buyers.

Good Luck!

3. No, I don't think you are crazy. I lived in a house that had strange
noises to, but whatever it was didn't hurt anyone and the rent was cheap.

I was living with 4 other kids in Austin at the time, I don't know if I would live there now.

The bathroom upstairs was very strange to be in, always cold. We just didn't use it, just the downstairs bathroom.

I didn't like to be in the house by myself but we always seem to have a lot of people over so the noises didn't seem so bad.

9. the way the house is laid out, I would have seen her
the stairs are literally a few steps from where I sit. She could not have gotten out of the house without me seeing her.

I thought it was that, or someone coming into the house using the realty lock box, but the lock box is behind a locked storm door after hours.

I'm certain, the times I ran upstairs and looked, that no one is there.

7. i never lived in a haunted house but i've had several
haunted "experiences". they always scared the hell out of me. i don't think i'd like to be in your position. it would really creep me out.

maybe your old woman ghost knows there is a change and so she is resuming her place in the home.

who lived there before you? or do you know the history of the previous owners?

take a sleeping potion (two over the counter benadryl and a glass of milk?) and call me in the morning--just not too early!

11. the original owner/builder
was a doctor and a bachelor. he built the home in 1939 aned sold the home to a couple in 1946. We bought it from them. They both were alive, he with Alzheimer's, when we first bought it. He died a few years later and she died four years ago. It's a pretty tight-knit neighborhood and people stay in touch and keep up, even with former neighbors.

I think the old woman ghost moving back theory "feels" right. But there were no homes here before this house was built. It was basically the western edge of the prairie.

I've always felt a weird kind of passive malevolence here. Nothing overtly threatening, just a pervasive sense of unwelcome. It's never really felt like "home." That may be part of what went wrong in my marriage. There is definitely weird underground water here. We are on top of a ridge line. It is downhill, even pretty steep downhill, no matter which way you go, yet there have been recurrent floods in various parts of the neighborhood.

I also have found a few unusual Native American artifacts here.

15. Intriguing...
I wonder if your home/neighborhood has unusual electromagnetic fields? Ghost activity seems to be linked with high EMF's, though the specialists haven't determined whether the ghosts cause the fields or are drawn to them.

20. I don't blame you,
but seriously, check with your realtor about haunting disclosure laws. You don't want to wind up having a sale fall through because you didn't let a buyer know the house was haunted. It's weird, but it's happened.

Best of Luck!

25. That's the tricky part,
if you don't say anything and the new owners have the same experiences that you do and are freaked out and then find out that you knew that there was something odd about the house and said nothing; they might be able to void the sale depending on what the disclosure laws are in your state/area.

You might jokingly ask your realtor about it, just see what their reaction is. It probably won't be a problem, but better safe than sorry.

27. Well...
If you don't believe in that kind of stuff....there would be nothing to pass on to the buyer.

Seriously. Even with the kind of odd stuff going on at my house, if you told me your house was haunted and I was a prospective buyer...I'd most likely look at you like you were nuts.

I'd keep it on the down low. If the buyers don't believe in that kind of thing they don't want to hear what they probably perceive to be "kooky stuff".

32. It really depends on state disclosure laws
odd as it sounds--

http://www.bankrate.com/brm/news/real-estate/20031023a1.asp

<snip>
More than two-thirds of all states require that home sellers present home buyers with a property disclosure form listing known legal hindrances, physical defects and even paranormal activity relating to the property. Failure to do so could result in civil and criminal action, and in some cases even recision of the sale.

...............

In more stringent states, the list can run to 10 pages, reflecting a variety of consumer or regional concerns, including earthquake damage, mold, radon, insect infestations, even ghosts and paranormal activity.
<snip>

Just sayin'

I doubt a little old lady will scare any potential buyers away, unless of course, they are allergic to perfume(or little old ladies).

Now, stop creeping yourself out and get some sleep! If the dog isn't having a problem, I wouldn't worry about any strange sounds.

8. If it's not scary,
think of them as the ideal roommates. Sure, they pace a bit at night, but they never leave dirty dishes in the sink or use the last of of the toilet paper/milk/toothpaste without replacing it.

I have had a similar experience. My ex and I lived in an old apartment building that was being renovated. One of the first days we lived there I burned some food on the stove & it set off all the fire alarms throughout the building, and we couldnt' reach the landlord to turn it off. Eventually the FD came, but not before I had run up the back steps to let the people we heard walking around upstairs that it was just a mistake and not to panic with the alarm going off. There was an elderly couple in the kitchen, but they just looked at me, like they didn't understand English, but they also might not have been able to hear me over the alarm. But they didn't seem panicked, so I went down to meet the FD. When the alarm was turned off, my husband and I went back up to the upstairs neighbors to intorduce ourselves, but no one was home. In fact, it didn't look like anyone had been home for a long time. The place was dust-filled, with no footprints in the kitchen even though the table and chairs I saw them in were still there. We found out soon after that ours was the first apartment that was finished, and so we were the only people living in the building. They were working on the apartment under us, but only during week days. That was pretty freaky, all right. But like you, our ghosts seemed very benign. They mostly liked to pace.

Good luck!

If I really saw people like you did, I'd freak.

18. I had much crazier shit happening in the "real world" at the time.
People I saw that weren't there? Small potatoes. My real room mates were alcoholics and coke and heroin addicts. They were family members, the only people willing to let me live with them at the time. Sill, I was far more scared the cops would come busting in any second than an elderly ghost couple. Real life is always scarier than ghosts.

29. I don't know
My ex is vague about whether she'll sleep here again. She has no furniture there yet and is sleeping in a sleeping bag on the floor.

If she showed up expecting to sleep here and I was in our old room, it would be awkward.

They show the house every day or two, so I just leave that room all fixed up. It's a bit more of a feature room than the one where I'm sleeping.

Plus, I'm not all that keen on sleeping in our old bed.

Good question though. I'm the one here night after night. Why not get comfy.

just a creaky old house

two. Every few months it would sound like a large box of dishes being
dropped on the floor, we learned to ignore the sounds. I never got the nerve to go check the kitchen, whatever it was could have it for the night.

My cousin who would visit had to sleep with the lights on, and even then he didn't sleep well.

36. We lived in that house for almost 3 years, nothing ever hurt us.
All I can tell you is to try to relax, play a radio overnight or leave the TV on.

We never saw anything, just sounds. Whatever it was decided to stay around, we found out from the neighbors that the house was always noisy even when empty.

The house is now gone and all the beautiful trees in the yard were cut down, a large house is now there. I hope the ghost or whatever it was is happy in it's new house, or maybe moved on.

Living in house with strange noises is an expience nobody belives until it happens to them.

I have never seen a ghost but I can't discount them either.

Try to get some rest, and have a good night.

If you need to talk I will be here tomorrow night. Sweet dreams.

10. I just bought my first home...
It was built in 1916. It sat empty for year after it was purchased from the previous owners distant family (she had no immediate family) by a company that assumed they could do nothing to the property and turn around and sell it for a profit...I in turn bought it from them...a year later. She lived here for at LEAST 40 years. The neighbors say she was friendly, but very private. My neighbor has lived in her house for 10 years. She claims that she spent the most time with the previous owner of our house (Lela...little old black lady...a seamstress in her pre-retirement years).

Well the neighbor said she never went out. Only occasionally to do yard work. And although she was in her 90's, she always did her own yard work. The neighbors all said she was a neat old lady. But she loved her home life. Loved her home.

Well, she peacefully passed away in her sleep. Because of her solitary lifestyle, a week passed before she was discovered. I knew about it when I bought the house, but as long as it wasn't a violent death, it doesn't really frighten me. Before hospices people died either at home or in a hospital. Many old homes have had someone die in them.

On our first night in the house, my girlfriend made sure that Lela knew that we weren't here to ruin the house. And she thanked her in advance for being so welcoming.

I, not being a big believer in that kind of stuff, rolled my eyes as she walked room to room talking loudly and reassuring Lela's spirit that we loved the home and were glad that we were the one's lucky enough to land the old abode.

We have been here for six weeks. Doors close at weird times. Weird enough times that it has made me think twice about the after life.

The biggest incidents that have freaked me out and got me thinking...are the out of the ordinary actions of my cat, Coltrane. I have had him since he was 8 weeks old. He is six now. Very docile. Very loving. Has slept in my armpit since our first night together (tough on me now that he exceeds 20lbs). We are so close, he gives me a "bath" every night before we fall asleep. He licks my chin and neck for 5 min at a time...purring contently.

Well...he's started freaking out the passed couple of weeks. He'll be lying by my side at night quietly when he'll suddenly jump up, start meowing in an aggressive manner that I've never heard from him. He gets this crazy look in his eyes...literally. His expression is very angry. And the kicker...he begins biting me! He's NEVER biten me. He's NEVER biten anybody. Well he'll bite me continually up and down my arms until I grab him and shake him. Then he just stops. His expression changes and he settles back into my armpit for another 10-15 mins. before it happens again.

Now he wakes me up with that creepy aggressive meow. I'll open my eyes and he'll literally be nose to nose with me...and that angry expression. It's really starting to creep the shit out of me...and I'm a grown man. It totally makes the hair on my neck stand up.

I don't know which would be worse. That Coltrane is ill. Or that he's possessed by a little old black seamstress that wants me out of her house.

In the end...I'm assuming it has something to do with being in a new home. But he has traveled across country with me, and his behavior has never been this odd.

So....Lela....if you're listening....I get a kick out of doors opening and closing. I however would like you to leave my cat alone.

14. good luck with it
Edited on Wed Aug-03-05 01:14 AM by leftofthedial
I don't have a cat to deal with. My ex's cat moved with her. He was here for a few weeks with me while the ex and kids were on vacation though and he didn't act weird.

Except that he started getting affectionate with me. (I don't really like cats and he and I never really had much to do with one another.)

Weird about Coltrane. Good luck.

38. The house I grew up in was built in the 1880's...my parents still
live there. My great great grandfather and great grandfather built the house and my great grandparents lived in the house. They both died, and a few years later my family moved in. Sometimes when we are downstairs watching tv, we can hear footsteps upstairs going across the floor.

One night my dad said to us, "Did you ever get the feeling that we aren't the only ones living in this house?"

42. My ghost usually seems to go to bed early
the footsteps are either during the day or relatively early evening.

last night I distinctly heard two footsteps about 11:30. that's the latest I recall

I definitely am getting the feeling I'm not alone here.

44. The vast majority of hauntings are benign, so don't worry
I lived with a haunting for several years, the footsteps, doors opening and closing, strange electrical problems no electrician could figure out, cold spots, pretty much your classic stuff.

Most hauntings are not even considered to be "spirits" of dead people lingering. It is thought that they are imprints or "tape recordings" of things people did or felt.

For instance, if someone lived in a house for decades, the repeated actions and continual presence would imprint itself into the house (it is thought that water and/or electrical phenomena is involved somehow). So if you hear footsteps, it isn't the spirit of the person, but just sort of a memory or playback function that science hasn't come to grips with yet. It could be that the person is actually still alive, living elsewhere.

52. That is the most likely scenario
I know it can be unnerving, but try not to panic when you experience things. Just keep in mind that you are much more powerful than any "playback", it can't hurt you any more than the tv or radio.

In the unlikely event that things DO escalate, such as objects actually flying through the air or voices start to speak, do yourself a favor and read "Poultergeist" by Colin Wilson, which is an excellent study of "spiritual" hauntings. A poultergeist is a haunting that is believed to actually involve a "spirit", whether that of a dead person or something that lives on a different plane is open to debate.

The bottom line is, those more destructive, disruptive types of hauntings are usually connected with a person or persons with a lot of negative, psychic energy (like teenagers). It is thought that spirits (however you define them) can use that energy to commit random acts of mild violence & general mayhem.

If there has been a lot of unhappy disruption in your home, that could trigger a poultergeist-type haunting. But so far your symptoms don't indicate that.

53. You're going through a lot right now
Anxiety plays tricks on your perceptions. The fact that your dog isn't reacting tells me that you are likely hearing sounds your dog is used to but that you are perceiving them differently. It's probably quieter in your house now that you're alone, for instance. Houses make sounds as they expand and contract with temperature changes. Cold spots are usually a sign that you have a ventilation problem (i.e., a draft).

57. It is a drafty, noisy old house
and I am going through a lot.

that is the likeliest explanation

but I'm a pretty level-headed guy and the "footstep" noises are extremely unambiguous.

59. There may very well be footsteps in your house
Our last house was nearly 100 years old, and said to be haunted. We even had to sign a waiver saying we had been told it was haunted. We were warned about cold spots, moaning and crying in the night, mysterious banging, footsteps...

The cold spots were drafts. The mystery noises were plumbing (you would be amazed just how freaking alarming those old pipes could sound during periods of drought in our area, or maybe not) and the heating ducts, which made banging, creaking and ticking sounds whenever the temperature shifted more than five or ten degrees. The footsteps were a family of very large opossums who had claimed our attic. YEACH! They were so big, and the attic was so hot I guess, that they moved slowly.

:scared:

58. I grew up in one
Everyone in my family experienced things. A lot of them had no explanation at all even though we tried to explain everything away for a while. For example I was trying to go to sleep one night I heard my guitar hit the wall on the other side of the room than where it was. I turned the light on and it was on the floor on the other side of the room. I don't think it was a draft or anything, it just happened. There were a lot of things that went on and my parents are still there and tell me new stories here and there. My mother keeps trying to explain them away..LOL. There was a penny that my mother gave to my father when they were dating and he has kept it ever since in a drawer in their room. One day my mother was watching TV and happened to look down and found the penny. It was on a different floor of their house out of the drawer. I don't remember the whole story, but it seemed to freak them out a bit.
I lived in other houses since moving from my parents and it wasn't until the house I live in now that stuff is happening. I won't go into detail here because it isn't a typical "haunting" and I have yet to find anyone who can help with it. All I can say is whatever it is, I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. Well, OK maybe on my enemy, but not on just anyone.

just "corner-of-the-eye" sightings, noises and the perfume.

We're talking aobut maybe 25 total events in 14 years.

Probably nothing.

67. Most of the time it's nothing
That's not saying it isn't paranormal either. I don't think of things that are paranormal as freaky, they just are to me. If the old woman's spirit is at your house and things have changed, she could be a little more active because she can see that you are "lonely" or something.
Most spirits are just people that don't have a solid body anymore. She could care about how you are feeling. I don't know for sure, but if you don't think it is anything, than that's fine too.

60. If you've lived there
14 years without harm, I sure you'll be safe. If it's the ghost of the lady you think it is, she's just visiting her old home. I've heard too many stories from people I know and respect not to believe in the possibility of ghosts. And, I've had a few unnerving experiences myself. But, I've never heard of anyone who was harmed.

i dont think you should be.

animals are very perceptive to threats, especially dogs with loyalty to their owners. and theirs always that old thing about dogs barking at the paranormal, but that may just be a story. who knows.

on edit: ive probably read too much of this thread for being alone in a creaky house alone until the rest of the family gets home. so i think ill bookmark it and wait until somone else is home to read it, that way i can blame sounds on them...lol

I don't think you're crazy.

My brother and I still swear the house we grew up in is haunted. We used to hear weird shit in that house-footsteps, whispers. Then there was the stuff that would turn up missing. Our parents thought were we nuts. It was not an old house, but turns out it the neighborhood was built on top of an old settlement. We (us and the other kids in neighborhood) used to find headstones in the woods behind our houses. Anyone in Stone Mtn? I can tell you where it is lol. More importantly, I can tell you where not to buy a house lol.

The house my parents live in now is 100 years in a little town about 70 miles north of Atlanta. We stayed there awhile when my husband got off active duty, and my kids swear up and down there is a lady ghost in that house. My parents blow it off, like they did me and brother, but it freaked me out, so I tracked someone down who could tell me the history of the house and the area. The house does have a sad history, and the ghost doesn't freak the kids out like ours did me and my brother. I've never seen or heard anything weird in that house.
