Metallica To Open For Rolling Stones On New Tour (San Fran Only)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Heavy metal titans Metallica will open both of the Rolling Stones' San Francisco shows in November, potentially providing the English rockers with their toughest competition since James Brown preceded them on stage 41 years ago.

In an email sent to fan club members on Tuesday, Metallica said the Stones invited them last week to open the Nov. 13 and Nov. 15 shows for a hometown crowd at SBC Park. An additional opening act will be announced shortly, and the start time has been moved up one hour to 6 p.m. PT.

"After having the thrill of playing with some of our personal heroes such as AC/DC, Deep Purple, Iron Maiden and Ozzy (Osbourne), how could we say 'no' to the quintessential rock band, who are in some way responsible for all of this?" the band said in the email.

"These two shows are about nothing other than having fun and playing music ... nothing to sell, nothing to promote, nothing to talk about ... Simply put, this is the reason we started a band 25 or so years ago, and we are psyched and appreciative of this awesome opportunity to get cracking again..."

Metallica last performed on Nov. 28 last year, when their world tour ended in San Jose, Calif. The Rolling Stones are in Toronto, rehearsing for their world tour, which begins on Aug. 21 in Boston. Other opening acts on the itinerary include Pearl Jam, Maroon5, Joss Stone and the Tragically Hip.

But none of them will likely present as much of a challenge as "Godfather of Soul" Brown did when he preceded the Rolling Stones on stage at the TAMI Show concert at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in October 1964. He vowed to make the nervous youngsters wish they had never set foot in America, and delivered a typically frenetic performance, but the Stones held their own and were congratulated by Brown afterwards.
