Found a kitty - thaks for your advice, loungers
I researched my local cat rescue places and last night made a call about this little fella. His story just broke my heart and I knew he just might be the kitty for me. We're both survivors. I will meet him at the foster's home on Sunday

Isn't he adorable? :loveya:

Notes: Hi, my name is Poppy, and I have a sad tale to share with you. I'll start as far back as I can remember.

When I was just a little kitten, I had a home of my very own. It was warm and I had lots of toys and food. Then, when I turned six months old and I was no longer a little baby, I was put outside to become an "outdoor cat". I begged and tried to get back in the house, but they wouldn't let me in. So that is when I started my life outside. This went on for seven entire years. That means I lived outside for seven freezing cold winters and seven hot dry summers. Not a very good life for a cat like me. Fortunately, the people that I lived with as a kitten left food outside for me, so I decided to stick around. Being outside for so long took it's toll on me, both of my ears are missing due to extreme frostbite. Minnesota winters are not kind to cats at all.

Then one day, the people that were feeding me decided to move away and leave me all alone again. To make it worse, it was the dead of winter. Luckily, one of their neighbors took pity on me and called Feline Rescue. When they heard my story they immediately knew they had to help me so I would never have to live outside again.

Well, now I'm about nine years old, and I'm finally living the life every cat was meant to have! Despite my rough life on the streets, you will never find a more loving and affectionate cat as me. My foster mom said she can even hear me purring from across the room when she starts talking to me. I will sit on your lap all day long if you'll let me. I also love to be brushed which is good since i have a beautiful thick coat of fur. I give kisses and will lick you to show you how much I love you.

The home I think I would enjoy most is one that is more on the quiet side. Due to my previous life on the streets, loud noises and fast movements tend to scare me, so small kids may not be the best. My foster mom says I act like I've been abused because feet scare me and I act like I'm going to get kicked. I have too much dignity to admit that so I chose to forget my not-so-perfect past and move on. Also, other cats tend to pick on me, which makes me sad. I would prefer it if I could be the only kitty in the house, or maybe it would be ok for me to share a home with a quiet and submissive cat. The main thing I want is a human that has lots of time to cuddle and play with me. I have no desire to go outside ever again, so I hope we can spend lots of time together snuggled up on the couch!

My beautiful blue eyes may still have a sad look in them sometimes, but I promise you, I'm not sad anymore. The only thing that would make my life complete is to find a person that will adopt me and love me unconditionally FOREVER. If you open up your heart and your home to me, I promise you we'll live happily ever after. Since I'm living in foster care, please call _____at ___ _______to hear more about me and my winning personality. I'm looking forward to your call!

3. May you be blessed as our family was after my daughter took in a shelter
cat who was an adult and had seen a tough life. He became the best, sweetest, most loyal cats we ever saw. Funny, bright and damn ggod company he was. Never held a grudge and never forgot how far he had come.

Blessings on your house with this new addition. Be patient, there may be many quirks and baggage to get over, but it will be worth the investment of time and unconditional love!

Lovely cat you have there. Lovely cat.

and so is that poor abused cat. May you have many happy years together. (and please change his name, you don't want him called after George Bush Sr, do you?) :D

9. I was debating this
If he's used to it, I might be stuck with it, if not I was thinking of calling him Rumpole, after Rumpole of the Bailey, the crusty old barrister played by Leo McKern. He looks like a Rumpole.

12. Change his name if you want
(and Rumpole sounds like a match for that one). Even if he's been called Poppy for a while, having a new name will help him adjust to a new forever home.

For some reason, rescues seem to do better when renamed. Some would say say that it's anthropomorphizing to attribute it to being able to forget the conditions associated with the old name but I just figure they aren't real animal people.

10. Congratulations! and what a sad story :(
You now have a new best friend. What a wonderful thing you are doing by giving a new home to a kitty who has suffered. Still beautiful, even with the ears. I got a cat from a rescue group several months back. He also had been abandoned. I don't know how anyone could do such a thing. He is the sweetest, most loveable kitty in the world. Love to play, loves to cuddle, and seems to know just how lucky he is to be adopted and not on the streets. I bet your baby will be the same way. Pets know when they've got a good thing going, especially after having it really bad.

these poor guys have very little chance with the demand for kittens. Like I said, you rock. (also his foster mom rocks for writing up such an awesome, loving and detailed bio!)

15. I discussed that with the foster
She told me that while Feline Rescue always has a lot of kittens, they are always in demand. Nice older cats just sit and wait. My cat-to-be has been in foster homes for over a year and I was the first person who called about him, which was so sad.

That made me more determined to take him. He's happy in his foster home, but he deserves a permanent person. The foster said she'd have taken him except that her own cat is a dominant alpha cat and chases poor Poppy/Rumpole around and scares him.

He will be my only pet and king of my (his?) house.

Poor guy, I'm such a sucker for hard luck animal stories. I suppose that's why I've got four dogs and three cats, all rescues.

This sounds like a wonderful, sweet cat, and would make a fine companion for you.

17. If any Detroit area posters want some cats, there are plenty hanging
around my house. I already have one cat and can't afford another vet bill.

There is a litter of 4 cats, about 2 and a half months old. One is gray, one is gray-striped, and two are black. I'm not sure about genders.

There is a cat I've been feeding since she was a kitten who now has a kitten of her own. I call them Hillary and Chelsea, as I did see that the baby is a girl. The baby has a head injury of sorts, it looks like a bigger cat or dog bit her. Hillary, who is somewhat feral and doesn't let me touch her, did let me wipe the baby's head with a wet paper towel and get rid of some of the drainage. The baby does have a good appetite and looks like she's recovering. I'd say she's about a month old, and really too young to be separated from the mother at this point. She's very cute, lots of brown-striped fur and very tiny.

The city of Warren won't do anything about them. There is a large colony of feral cats in the neighborhood and they do keep vermin away, but I feel bad for the babies.

You'd have to catch one of the older kittens. They move pretty fast.

30. Ok, I'm crying now
Blessings on you. What a sweet and beautiful cat.

I have recently found myself the person of a cat as well. We found him in a Walmart parking lot (ok, don't give me any grief, I don't USUALLY shop there and it's off topic ;)). We put up fliers, contacted every pet shop, vet and shelter in a 50 mile radius and even put ads in the papers and on-line to see if someone was missing this sweet little boy.

The vets and shelters all suggested that Walmart is a popular place for dropping off cats and this is a popular time of year for people to move and leave their pets behind. How can any human being do such a thing??? We couldn't even send him to a no-kill shelter since he was soooooo happy to have been taken in and fed. :grr:

Anyway, thank you for taking in this little darling. I wish you many years of happiness together. He's beautiful.

33. Good luck to the two of you
He is very handsome. I'm sure he'll be appreciative of the nice home you'll give him.
I adopted an adult cat and it took him a little while to adjust. At odd times, he would just mew and mew. I would ask him what's wrong and talk to him but there was no connection. About a week after I brought him home, I was taking a bath and he started mewing loudly. I didn't want to get out of the tub, so I just mewed back to let him know where I was and that I had heard him. He mewed again and I mewed back as close to what he said as I could. We went back and forth like that for quite a while with me trying to imitate him as well as I could. He loved it -- he started walking about the tub and butting me with his head. Somehow this mewing back and forth helped him connect with me. You might want to try it, if your new addition starts to talk to you.

He is beautiful and sounds like such a nice kitty. It breaks my heart to read stories like this. I have an 11 year old cat who has never known any other life than the one he has here with us and I think that's the way it should be for all pets - love and safety and security for their whole lives.

Much good karma coming your way for adopting and choosing an older cat. :yourock: :bounce:  :bounce:
