This is absolutely positively ridicious.
Today I went in to register for my classes for my senior year at my new school. The options were at best, pathetic. I wanted psychology (it was full up), I wanted some sort of philosopy (nonexistent), I wanted some kind of politically-themed class (closest was economics, to me, not close at all), I wanted a writing class. None. No writing classes. Nothing beyond basic English-literature, which is a must-have and not an elective.

But get this, guys. They had "Equine-Science." They boasted of having a horse outside.

So yay. I have apparently now mistakenly joined a FARM, not a school.

Sorry if this comes off as unfriendly to farmers, or whatever, but I find it fucking ridicious.

4. I would MARRY the horse
If they'd get a proper writing class and teach people to write. From where cometh the next Poe, the next Dickenson, the next Guy-Who-Wrote-Sleepy-Hollow?? I was disappointed.

They don't have Driver-Education, either.

What was that thing Willy Wonka said..."...Doesn't promote a creative environment"(?), but you can stare at your horse all day long.

EDIT: Misunderstood, I'm a senior in high school, not yet college level, unfortunately. (I'm pleased you think so, even though I know I spelled things wrong in my original post)

2005-2006 Topic - Resolved: That the United States federal government should substantially decrease its authority either to detain without charge or to search without probable cause.

You'll learn more about politics/philosophy/economics through debate than you will in almost any high school classroom, I guarantee it.

Unless your school doesn't really attend tournaments, in which case it would probably just suck.

Here's a good resource for high school debate. http://www.cross-x.com/content.php?file=links2/links.html

And I coached it for 7 years after high school. Many of my high school friends were from other schools that I met at tournaments. It's a good way to meet other smart people. Many kids who are bored in the traditional classroom setting (like I was) do well at debate because it allows them to explore subjects that they are interested in, many of which are way more advanced than the material in a typical high school social studies course (e.g. you will never learn about Foucault in high school, but you will hear his philosophy articulated as a critique of some other argument often in high school debates). It's a very interesting subculture, and not at all as geeky as it is commonly portrayed to be.

24. Wow.
That's really neat. ^_^ It sounds like a good idea and I'll definitely try to look into it...

*out of curiosity, googles "Foucault"*
Is this him?

"Foucault is well known for his critiques of various social institutions, most notably psychiatry, medicine and the prison system, and also for his ideas on the history of sexuality. His general theories concerning power and the relation between power and knowledge, as well as his ideas concerning "discourse" in relation to the history of Western thought have been widely discussed and applied."

I know that there are some good high school teams in Georgia. I've been out of the activity for 6 years now, but I when I coached HS teams from Michigan, I can remember seeing Pace and (I think) Carrolton at national circuit tournaments. Emory and West Georgia are really good college teams too.

13. I don't think so...
A lot of the courses said "AP - Name Of Course - Approval required", indicating I'd have to have had prior history with a teacher or something of the like, I think. But then again, I am too timid in public for my own good and as a direct result I tend not to say much when I don't know people very well.

AP means Advanced Placement, which would be good, as not many people who're in there are usually the type of kid who just goes to school because s/he has to.

But thanks, I really don't deserve that much praise. *Ego* I consider myself quite intelligent, however...not in comparison to anyone here. Whoo. @_@

42. AP is Advanced Placement
In most schools, you don't need to have a history with a particular teacher, you just need the grades to justify being in the class.

If you can get into an AP English class, you should. Writing skills are usually stressed in these classes and if you do well on the AP exam (administered at the end of the year) you can skip freshman English in college. (I did.)

Good luck!

seemed to have decided that writing is no longer an important skill. People in nearly every field will need to know how to write, but schools just don't teach students how to do it anymore.

I shouldn't judge it too harshly, since I haven't taken it or anything, but really...I can imagine some kind of board meeting:

Principal: What class should we put on this year?
Teacher1: An extra English class? :D
Principal: Hmm.
Teacher2: Creative writing, with poetry and short stories?
Principal: Hmmmmmm.
Teacher3: Horsey science?
Principal: BY JOVE, that's what we'll do. Horsey science it is, but for God's sake, man, call it "equine", it's far more dignified sounding.

I can't see why you are upset about Philosophy and Psychology, thats not standard High School stuff... but writing? That is perhaps the most important college-prep class you can take... Besides, you'll get to take intro to Psych and Philosophy soon enough.

Talk to Counselor... best idea yet.

I have yearned for such an intro class for eons. ...Well, maybe not literally eons, but a couple of years at least.

What's worse is that they insisted I take a year of Chemistry and a fourth year of Math atop my other three. I want to be a LI-FREAKING-BRARIAN, not a CHEM-FREAKING-IST.

I will address the issue with her ASAP, if I can work up the courage for it.

College Prep includes Chemistry and Math..... standard...

I still think that no writing class is BAD.

Maybe I am being simplistic, but I think having a broad knowledge of things including math and science would be very beneficial to a librarian.. let me break this out for you.... after 10-15 years you don't remember everything you learned in HS or College from memory BUT
major theories do stick and that is precisely the knowledge a librarian should have.

Psych and Philosophy: You'll get what you want soon enough.
my two cents... good luck, incidentally I still use math and a little bit of science in my non-academic life... Its good for ya.

But let me tell you its good for you..I totally understand, I didn't either... I skipped Physics... but I did Chemistry and Biology. I never thought I'd like accounting... So skipped as much math as I could and I grew to regret it... I was a foreign language wizard... but now I'm in accounting....

Besides you are going to have to take the Math and Science to bet a B.A. so you might as well be prepared.... if you don't it will be so much harder...

Hang in there.... I think if your father knew that you took college prep classes instead of going for the better average, he might understand.... :pals: not to assume anything...
