Wanna see what happens at a Promise Keepers protest?
Here's my buddy, Dave, at the protest. It's one of my favorite pictures. He got prayer circled.

6. How are they scary?
They're just following their beliefs. I don't see them stoning the OP's friend.

They're friendly compared to the Phelpsians, who would club you with their picket signs if they weren't cowards.

in all ways. I think they are pretty scary, myself, frankly. I got married because I wanted a partner, not a boss.

12. I don't know, I guess the whole cult-like mentality
is what struck out at me. I've had people pray over me, which is a nice gesture in itself, I don't mind that. I just think that the group in the pic looks like a herd following it's herder. I don't know how to explain, I'm not in a good position right now as I am going through issues of my own and my mind doesn't want to work.

The women at the protest (myself included) were pretty darn scared. We'd stand back to back in case of attack. They were rather Phelpsian toward women.

24. I'm sorry to hear it.
My brother-in-law and several of his friends are PKs. His wife and both sisters-in-law are atheists. He's never tried to run roughshod over my sister; never tried to rule over her in any way. They have quite an equitable relationship.

I don't know why he's a member, unless it's to give himself one more way to hang with his buds.

20. Oddly enough
I was protesting the bishops conference in Dallas and found myself on the same side of the fence as the Phelps crowd (strange bedfellows). The cops roped them off from normal people. A friend and I enraged them by doing an insane "sodomite dance" every time they yelled "Sodomite" at the bishops. But they never hit us over the head.

5. Operation Rescue assholes...
used to do this to the cars driven by the clinic escorts. They'd circle around our cars and pray for them. (Well, they were praying for the people who had driven the cars, but we would tease them.)

Go ahead and pray people, at least you won't be harrassing someone.

30. I generally don't protest this sort of thing
I was just interested in how we'd be received. At the time, the guy who runs Promise Keepers was having an affair and divorcing his wife. They were also mysteriously missing millions of dollars collected from the faithful. We just thought these guys should know this before they emptied their wallets.

36. Been happening since church was invented
Seriously, if these people are gonna believe in an Invisible Man That Lives Above The Clouds, they'll be suckers for anything.

George W. Bush, for example. The Republican Party, for another. As far as church people go, as long as they're not hurting anyone, I'm pretty libertarian on letting them do what they want.

42. You protest anything that overtly proposes violence.
And PK does. Man is the head of the household and must take back his dominion...NO MATTER HOW HE HAS TO DO IT. Men rule and women and children are to shut up and take whatever the master hands out.

(PK was just here in Charleston. They openly advocated beating 'recalcitrant' wives, the right of men to 'take' marital privileges even if the wife doesn't agree (iow, rape) and physical punishment of children.

I was hoping someone would blow up the convention center.

and misogyny and irreverantly giving up their brains, given to them by God, in order to follow some even more clueless evil leader fuck.

Promise can go fuck themselves. Oh, wait - I bet they do! But it's not homosexual when they do it, it's "Godly bonding of the Godly male-archetype norm" or something like that, I'm sure.

Fuck them.

33. More than you want to know
Of course, they aren't going to tell you what a sleazeball McCartney is.

http://www.promisekeepers.org/

The History of Promise Keepers
“Way back before Promise Keepers had a name, we looked up the word integrity in Webster's Dictionary. He gave six definitions: ‘utter sincerity, honesty, candor, not artificial, not shallow, no empty promises.’”
-- Bill McCartney

The name “Promise Keepers” also derives from the covenant that God fulfilled through Jesus Christ. In Christ, God kept all the promises that he made to mankind and we rely upon God as the original Promise Keeper to keep our promises.

32. At the risk of defending PK
Edited on Wed Aug-03-05 01:46 PM by Taverner
Yes, they do espouse that the man is the head of the household. This is sexism, pure and simple.

But the majority of PK'ers are evangelicals who are looking for male bonding.

Yes, they are crazy, I'll give you all that. Most evangelical Christians are - but in the grand scheme of things, who's worse? The PKs or the current misadministration? OR Dobson?

Focus, people, focus.

These guys are Focus on the Family - lite.
