Cell Phone?

Yes. I don't want to pay PacBell anything.

On Edit: Changed title to "canceled."

1. We have digital telephone thru cox for local calls...
Then we use our cells when we're out and for long distance.

2. Yeah, only telemarketers called me on my home phone.
My friends all called my cell phone anyway.

4. I used cell phone only for about a year after...
Greekspeak and I moved to Florida, then decided to get a regular land line again. We have both right now.

5. Yep, I'm
a college student right now so with dorming, I rely on the cellphone for all my calls. When I'm out of school, I'll probably keep using the cell--I prefer how the cell tells you when you've missed calls even if the person doesn't leave a message.

6. I would, but I need it to get updates for the satellite TV.
I'm stripping it down, though. No voice mail, no call waiting, no long distance carrier, nothing.

8. Yes--
We got rid of our land line over two years ago. It's great. We got a deal on two phones. We leave one at home in the spot where we kept our land line phone, and my husband has the other one to carry around. I already had a cell phone. Since we both had to have cell phones anyway, we are saving about $100 a month doing this. My husband has a large family in another state, and with the week-end deal on the cell phone, it really cut down on those long distance calls.

9. Needed regular phone to install home alarm system....
turned around and cut the phone. We can still program the alarm and it will go off loudly, except some guy in Pakistan doesn't get to call my local police. Cell phones are best for us and those pesky dinner time callers are gone.

10. yup
haven't had a land line for a few years now. And I have found that cell phones make excellent leashes for restless teens.

11. Nope. Won't go there.
Your cell phone (and many others) may become useless in an AC power outage, as the transmission towers and repeaters rely on AC. (This did happen to many, many people the last time NYC had a big summer power outage.) Landline phones rely on DC power carried over the phone wires.

If you want to discuss sensitive personal or financial information, you want a Corded Landline phone to do that, not a cordless phone, not a cell phone. True, interception is rare, but you just never know with any wireless or cell phone who might be listening.

As someone else brought up, some household services (cable, DSL, security systems, etc.) require you to have a landline.

I have a friend who dropped his land line a year ago; there's one good spot in his place where he can carry on an extended long distance conversation; if he shifts, and sometimes even when he doesn't...I lose him...sometimes more than once in the same call. He might enjoy his landline-free status, but I and his other friends who call him sure don't.

Just another perspective, folks. :)

12. i don't forsee a situation where I would give up my corded landline
Edited on Wed Aug-03-05 07:29 PM by miss_kitty
especially since the time my cordless phone rang, I answered it, and it was a call for my upstairs neighbour. I could hear their conversation, and they had NO IDEA I was on the call. And IIRC, a landline is the only communication I have a reasonable expectation of privacy, although with the passage of all this 'Patriot' Act bullfuckingshit, I am not sure what the definition of 'reasonable' or 'privacy' is. And nerds and geeks can listen in on cells and cordless calls.

On Edit: plus cellphone reception always sucks at some point during the conversation. "No. I can't hear you now."

13. After finally resolving a 2 year billing dispute nightmare with Qwest....
...which was my THIRD billing dispute with them within 5 years, I swore I would never do business with them again. My PC was already on cable by then, so I unplugged the landline and went strictly cell.

Just have to train people not to call you too much between 5 - 9 PM, so you don't use up all your daytime minutes ;).

One thing I'll say for sure is that I've never had to deal with telemarketers since I switched and have had very few "wrong numbers".

14. What about the internet? And is it financially sound?
I'm in a rural area and don't have high speed internet. I don't think I'd like using the net on a tiny screen.

The cell phone, which I got rid of, charged city taxes and I don't live in a city. Its a rip-off!

17. Have been for about 18 months
Still have a hard line in for fax/DSL but only use cell for calls. Love the free nights after 7:00 and weekends with no long distance and no roaming... great deal since work picks it all up.

20. We still have dialup here in the boonies.
But I am going to cancel my long distance service and all the other extras. I never answer my home phone - just have the machine pick it up all the time.

21. Thinking about it.
Sprint is our local carrier, and they have absolutely sucked lately. Bought a house and because of the change in service they signed me up specifically against my expressed wishes for all kinds of services. Even without all that crap it's still like $60 a month for plain old local calls. I could use that to help me make the house payment.
