Although I do think the musical scene is looking up. Lots of great new bands out there. We definitely hit a nadir a few years back between '98 and '02/'03.

What was famous in the 90s? The Spin Doctors, Matchbox 20, Shania Twain, ACE OF BASE (!!), and that fucking Whoop (There It Is) song.

Give me this decade's music any day. :)

EDIT: I forgot the MACARENA. How can you forget the MACARENA? Oh, and the 90s gave us Ricky Martin, the Backstreet Boys, N'Sync, and boybands in general.

Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc (when grunge was good); Liz Phair, Tori Amos, even Alanis Morissette (the whole "women in rock"-thing); Green Day, Weezer, Pavement, The Smashing Pumpkins, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Counting Crows, Beck, Radiohead, Massive Attack, trip-hop (i.e. Portishead), Primal Scream, Shoegazing (My Bloody Valentine, Ride), U2's "Achtung Baby!", Britpop (Oasis, Blur, Elastica, Pulp, Suede, The Verve, Supergrass)...

Plus modern rock radio actually existed at that time. Nowadays, the last modern-rock stations are being swallowed by monotonous corporate-rap stations.

Like I said, it's been looking up lately, but music right now still isn't as good as it was at the '90s prime.

13. Okay, I grant you all the bands listed

And Achtung Baby is my favorite album EVER. But, I am 20, and I listened to the radio pretty much in the mid-late 90s, and remember nothing good. All the CDs I bought then I refuse to claim now. Most of your list seems to be early-mid 90s... which was MUCH better than late 90s. And you totally have a point about the radio. I am fortunate enough to live in a college town with a small alt rock station, where I can hear Interpol, the Killers, Franz Ferdinand, and the like.

14. Yeah, yeah, late '90s sucked

I forgot to mention R.E.M. which was great through Monster. And of course there were tons of great grunge bands (I'm not a huge fan of grunge, so that's why I left off some big important ones). I think it started to turn for the worst around '97 - all the big guitar band releases that year flopped (think U2's "Pop," The Smashing Pumpkins' "Adore," Oasis' subpar and overblown "Be Here Now," Alanis Morissette's second album), and then really fell apart from '98 trough '00. At that point, alternative/modern rock basically crashed outside of indie and the radio came to be dominated by teen pop and rap (most of which wasn't even GOOD rap - it was just crap rap).

I can never forgive the late 90s for giving the world Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, and all their clones. Never, never, never. This is the crap that was COOL when I was in junior high. :scared:

38. Well, the early/mid 90s

were still the 90s. So harumphing about bands from the late 90s seems sort of non-inclusive of the larger picture.

The early 90s saw some genuinely great music come out (even though much of it was offshoots from the late 80s).

I speak of the last dregs of the Replacements, the Pixies, Sonic Youth, Mudhoney, the Afghan Whigs, Ned's Atomic Dustbin (and the grebo scene in general), Curve, Lloyd Cole's solo stuff, Freedy Johnston, and much more.

Maybe I sound like an old fuddy duddy, but if I hear one more freaking asshole lead singer singing out of the back of their throat trying to be Eddie Vedder or the idiot from Creed, I'm going to punch someone.

I've heard maybe 2 or 3 songs I've liked since the beginning of the decade. One was the Dead 60s, one was Chuck Prophet. The others I can barely remember. And the Clear Channel-ization of radio has only really come on strong in the last 10 years.

That's it in a nutshell. Experiment with older stuff, is all I'm saying. College rock from the 80s was really great. That's the stuff I'll always love the most.

42. I love classic rock - 60s, 70s, some 80s

And yeah, real early 90s was pretty good. But lots of college rock thats out now is great too - I love Franz Ferdinand, the Killers, Interpol, and Coldplay just to give you a few examples (though Coldplay gets hideously overplayed). But EVERYTHING on the radio from like 1997- 2000 SUCKED. BIG TIME.

OK. We can compromise. I agree Coldplay is overplayed, but I still like some of their stuff. It drives my husband crazy, because all he has to do is hear the intro to "Clocks" and he flies into a rage.

The new single isn't bad either. I like the one Killers song I've heard.

5. The 1990's!

Clinton was president..
we got two nice USSC justices..
the Lewinsky issue made for hilarious comedy bits on late-night TV..
I was in college and had loan money to have fun on..
I fell in love for the first time..
the music was better..


Hell.. even Saturday Night Live was better back then - Ferrell, Oteri, Kattan, Morgan, Gasteyer, Shannon, Hartman, Rock, etc..

Such a nice decade. I'm only 26, and I have the distinct feeling that I'm gonna look back on that decade as my favorite. While it's kinda sad, in a way, I'm also thankful that I got to live through it and enjoy it fully.

17. Things were going good for me in the 90's

I had a decent job, no debts, 30 pounds lighter, more hair, could afford to do more things. I was in the words to the Pink Floyd song "Comfortably Numb". Politics was just a side talk for me. That all went into decline after 1999.

I disagree with the music discussions here, because they center on putting down pop artists. I definitely think that pop now is a lot better than pop in the 90s. And I think some of the lesser known bands now are just as good as Pearl Jam, R.E.M., and Nirvana. They just don't get as much airplay.

My high school years. I still remember the peace, prosperity, optimism and hope for the future and for a better world we had back in that decade. I still remember going to sleep every night confident in the knowledge that there was a good man in the White House who had consistently shown visionary and courageous leadership at every turn and would look after our interests. I also have fond memories of my time in high school from that decade and I think there was a lot more diversity in terms of music and TV shows than there is now. I can honestly say that during the 1990s I had profound respect and admiration for approximately 80 per cent of the world leaders whereas today that figure is approximately around 5 per cent. We had some good political leaders during that decade who we need to get back now

Aside from 2000 (the last year of the Clinton Administration), the first nine years of 20001 and my visit to the US in 2003, I’ve generally found this decade depressing and gloomy and the political situation very bleak. I never would have imagined that we would have reached the point where we are now five years ago

Can't think of one thing that's better about this decade. It doesn't even have it's own "feel." It's like a 90's-past-its-expiration-date kind of stale. Same clothes, music, writers, minus the edginess it had 6+ years ago.
Oh yeah, did I mention the war and deficit and shitty economy? There's that, too.
The Aught's are to the 90's what the 70's were to the 60's.

39. Hmmm. As perverse as this is: '00s. Wait, hear me out--

Alright, here's what is is: I'm aware AND active now. Back then, I was just tangentially "aware." Still, mostly very sheeplike. My attitude, like that of most semi-financially comfortable college kids was: that growing RW extremity in gvt. sure sounds pretty bad, but it's unlikely it's ever going to take away my rights.

Also: I was "friends" with a LOT of assholes. It really shocks me how BAD some of my friends were back then, something I've come to face (painfully and reluctantly) in the last two years. I've never any of you; you're great, but our interaction consists of lines on a page. And yet all of you, ALL of you, are collectively more supportive of me than any of my so-called best-buddies were back in tha' day. In fact, I've been priviledged to get to know some damn fine people throughout the '00s. In the '90s, I either wasn't aware of them, or couldn't appreciate them. I guess how a person behaves toward you in adversity really is the true measure of whether someone is worthy of being called your friend.

As for all of those other things: the '90s were economically prosperous, sure, but I wasn't exactly getting ahold of any of the wealth. So, no big loss for me there. And as much as I'm sure we've all lost in the New World Economy, think of the things that WEREN'T so great about the economic and social structures of America back then. Who likes buying computers better now? Who likes DSL cheaper now? Who likes Qwest service better now? I'm just saying, it's not all totally horrible. My dietary options are better and better-informed now, for one thing.

Finally, as hairy as the world of information is becoming, the Internet is more useful to me now. I wouldn't want to live with it the way it was before all these awesome 'blogs/Watch.com groups. Before, it was extremely handy; now, it's a lifeline.

So, yep, those are my criteria. '00s it is. They're hard, but at least I'm awake to feel that.

but, i realize long term that the 90s are much better.

90s: got married & divorced, worked at a decent job, but often had to work tons of hours and had little chance for advancement.

00s: got remarried, fathered a wonderful baby, still happily married after almost 4 years, my job prospects have improved due to finding supervisory work at another company.
