Heat Is On To Solve Cold Crime

MILWAUKEE -- The recent heat wave led to an unusual theft in Milwaukee -- dozens of commercial rooftop air-conditioning units were swiped from the old Northridge Mall shopping center.

Officials said sometime over the past few weeks, thieves took dozens of air conditioning units right off the top of the building, which is being renovated into Grandville Station.

With so much new construction on the site, police suspect the thieves might have blended in with other activity and gone about ripping off the air conditioners unnoticed.

The missing units were valued at more than $50,000 each. Each unit was wired into the building, and police said the thieves took only the working parts, leaving the metal housings behind, so it looked as if the units were still there.
