14. I liked the Seldom Scene from the 70's early 80's

Almost everything they did was excellent. I don't know if they are known by many outside the D.C. area - they were a particularly local group here. They were sort of a break off group from the Country Gentlemen, another excellent D.C. bluegrass group. We had a lot of fine ones here back then sort of the local "scene".


Norman Blake's stuff, like the Last train from Coal Valley.

Also Emmalou Harris has done fine work for a very long time in this field.

I think it really got going with the Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo album. I know I'm showing my age here.

I've got to edit and add that I adore the Dixie Chicks and have all their albums.

Patsy Montana (1908-1996), born Ruby Blevins in Hope, Arkansas, came to WLS in 1933. Within a year after the photo below was taken, Patsy and the Prairie Ramblers recorded "I Want to be a Cowboy's Sweetheart." The song, which Patsy wrote, became the first record by a female country artist to sell a million copies.

24. That's a tough call

I love so much of that stuff. I have some good collections of some really old stuff. If you don't have any, get some of the Lomax recordings. That stuff is amazing.
Another suggestion is the DVD set of "American Roots Music". I believe it was made for PBS. It is a great documentary on American music through the years.
I also like country music that is put out today, but not the CMT stuff. I like the more folk style that comes out of places like Austin. There is still some good Americana music being produced out there.
I really can't mention just one or two performances that I like.

35. Robert Earl Keen is very cool; at a show in May we found to our surprise

that he's very popular with the frat boy/ future frat boy (it was a 17-and-older show) crowd. I don't know how you do that without any radio play, but songs like "The Road Goes On Forever" have to help.
