Best Pure Female Voice
I've been listening to my fair share of Sarah Brightman lately. I think she has an excellent voice. I don't know if she's the best out there, but I think she's up there at least. Anybody else have an opinion?

she sings like an angel...i've seen her live and up close...not knowing who she was...when she finished her set...my jaw was on the floor...perfection does not begin to describe her emotional impact and control.

19. i was at El Farols in Santa Fe New Mexico
many years back...she was just having something to eat...and apparently someone talked her into doing a number before she left...she sang accapella for 10 minutes...when she finished you could hear a pin drop...and then thunderous applause...
i did not know who she was until i got someone to tell me...she was incredable...and so natural...it was like her vocals floated out...

133. A lot of people
find his music depressing, but his new stuff (like the CD "10 New Songs") is more quietly contemplative. Here's a lyric:

A Thousand Kisses Deep
by Leonard Cohen (From the CD, "10 New Songs")

The ponies run, the girls are young,
The odds are there to beat.
You win a while, and then it’s done ¨c
Your little winning streak.
And summoned now to deal
With your invincible defeat,
You live your life as if it’s real,
A thousand kisses deep.

I’m turning tricks, I’m getting fixed,
I’m back on boogie street.
You lose your grip, and then you slip
Into the masterpiece.
And maybe I had miles to drive,
And promises to keep:
You ditch it all to stay alive,
A thousand kisses deep.

And sometimes when the night is slow,
The wretched and the meek,
We gather up our hearts and go,
A thousand kisses deep.

Confined to sex, we pressed against
The limits of the sea:
I saw there were no oceans left
For scavengers like me.
I made it to the forward deck.
I blessed our remnant fleet ¨c
And then consented to be wrecked,
A thousand kisses deep.

I’m turning tricks, I’m getting fixed,
I’m back on boogie street.
I guess they won’t exchange the gifts
That you were meant to keep.
And quiet is the thought of you,
The file on you complete,
Except what we forgot to do,
A thousand kisses deep.

And sometimes when the night is slow,
The wretched and the meek,
We gather up our hearts and go,
A thousand kisses deep.

The ponies run, the girls are young,
The odds are there to beat . . .

There was a thread about her, seems like only yesterday. Have we already forgotten? She was my favorite female singer ever.

Other female singers that belong in this thread include: June Tabor, Maddy Prior (check out a record the latter two made together, called Silly Sisters), Amy Denio (who does enough "extended vocal techniques" that you might not accept her as "pure"), and of course Joni Mitchell.

Not a pure singing voice in the traditional sense, but there is something very very powerful about her voice and the way she sings that connects with me as a listener.

And I like Claudia Gonson of the Magnetic Fields, especially on "Acoustic Guitar."

I've been a singer (in a choir) for 25 years - and think I know a little bit about voices.

kd is soooooo smooth!

Once, a friend of mine said "Oooh, you like her? Don't you know she's a lesbian?"

I said something like "Why should you care what she is? She's got a wonderful set of pipes." Said "friend" shut right up.

56. Depends on the type of music for me, and there are too many to choose just
one, so let me give a big ole list, in case you all have maybe overlooked someone:

Aretha
Ella
Billie
Joni Mitchell
Linda Ronstadt
Barbara Streisand
Patti Smith
Grace Slick
Janis Jopin
Roberta Flack
Lauryn Hill
Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette
Dusty Springfield
Whitney Houston
Pat Benetar
Nina Simone
Sinead
k.d. Lang
Linda Perry (4 non blondes, hell of a singer)

shoot, you could go forever...Amy Mann, Carole King, Bonnie Raitt, Tori Amos, Alicia Keyes, Sarah Mclachlan, Ani DiFranco, Tina Turner, Martha Wainwright, Donna Summer, Stevei Nicks, Carly Simon, Brenda Lee, Annie Lennox, Connie Francis, Bette Midler, Ann Wilson, Debbie Harry, Kim Gordon, Chrissy Hynde, Delores O'Riordan, Shirley Manson, Patty Smyth, Rickie Lee Jones, Shania, Joan Baez, Etta James, Pattie LaBelle, Minnie Ripperton, Mavis Staples, Erykah Badu, Cass Elliot & Michelle Phillips, Melissa Etheridge, Emmylou Harris...someone stop me before my fingers fall off...

Each of these and the many more I did not list, sang their own music in their own way, with the pure voice needed for the style music they were singing. Now that I am exhausted, excuse me while I get a towel.

71. Which CD?
I think Dark Night of The Soul, on Mask & Mirror, is one of the most beautiful pieces of music recorded over the last 20 years. Try it with head phones some time to get all of Brian Hughes's guitaring along with the vocals. Stolen Child from Elemental is also spectacularly beautiful.

It's a copy that a friend sent me from the US, with no title and no track listings. :eyes: But it sounds vaguely Celtic and very ethereal somehow. It's my constant painting companion, along with some stuff by Hevia.

Matheson sounds like Madonna must have wanted to on her last couple of records, but without any studio enhancement of her natural vocal purity.

I stopped dead in my tracks when I heard these two people sing for the first time. I was like discovering James Taylor 30+ years ago.

You've never heard of her? That's not surprising. Her stunning 1970 album on the Kapp label (whaaa?) was a victim of really bad, as in NO promotion, among other things. Heck, she never even went on the obligatory tour; in fact it's believed she's never performed live, except for friends, studio slaves and such. I think I'm one of about 100 people who bought the original vinyl. But she's baaaack!! I've never heard a voice so pure and hypnotizing.

http://www.lindaperhacs.com/

I don't work with her, or for her. I don't know her or anyone who does. I just know....

We were at a traditional Irish ceili in 2001 while touring Britain and Ireland, and there was the most beautiful Irish singer (don't know her name). We bought the CD of the music we heard that night, and one of her songs (sung in Gaelic) is the most haunting thing I've ever heard.

She performs mainly religious music, but you have to listen to the child's voice. (These mp3s on the site aren't the best, but they give you an idea of the quality of her voice.)

Angelina Davis is no typical sixteen year old Catholic high school student (now 17 year old). While most of her peers have been concerned with learning to drive and hanging out with friends, Angelina spent the past fifteen months making news on the ever growing Catholic music scene. Shortly after earning a 2003 Unity award for "Spoken Word Album of the Year", ("The Chaplet of Divine Mercy") Angelina was the sole American invited to sing at the Vatican blessing of the outdoor Nativity at St. Peter's Square on Christmas Eve.
