Am I the only person who doesn't like the sound of

trains? I don't live too incredibly close to any train tracks that I know of, but I sure hear them on those overcast nights and it unnerves me in a way. I do, however, love the sound on those same types of nights of a dog barking in that famous "Cujo" style deep voice. I don't know why I like the deep barks. I normally will get up and stay up if a small yappy type won't shut up. But the trains always get me up and reaching for the headphones. I just don't like the sound they make. Am I the only one?

1. How long have you lived

where trains go by close enough to wake you up? I lived near a railroad track for 11 years, and after a while, they became "white noise" and I didn't notice them.

6. Ever heard of the Eastern Seaboard?

I don't know if that rings any bells. Until just a few years ago, the trains were considered a big deal for travel in my home county. I live in the city next to Hamlet, NC. Hamlet is known as the Eastern Seaboard and they still have a festival and train cars all through town to celebrate trains. It's kind of a fixation with history (train specific) I guess. I just don't like the sound of them.

7. Ever heard of the Platte Valley, in Nebraska?

Grand Island to North Platte is the world's busiest freight train corridor. That's where I lived for 11 years.

2. Sometimes they bother me

I used to only hear them late at night when I was having trouble falling asleep, so I kind of associate the sound with insomnia sometimes.

It's usually a night when I have had a lot of trouble with my aches and pains so I can't sleep. That' probably it.

3. I absolutely adore trains

I love the sounds of them; when I hoppeb trains a tramped around for awhile I really got to adore the sound, especially at night..

4. I live next to a commuter train track.

It only comes by 6 times a day, but it doesn't bother me much. Granted, I lived right next to a first aid squad where I was living before this, so trains are down right soothing now. But that's just me.

5. I love the sound of them!

I used to live by a big GM factory, and a few nights a week I could hear the trains coming in and switching around dropping off stuff and picking up new stuff.

I love the sound they make at high speed. I love the sound of switching and yard work. I love the horns.

I find it verrrrrry soothing in all contexts.

11. A sleep inducer.

I used to live on Chicago's NW Side (Avondale) right next to the Chicago & Northwestern tracks and the Kennedy Expressway. The deep roar of the diesel locomotives and the hummmmm of the traffic was 24/7 and it always made me sleepy. But that's just me.

that of a lone Harley on a quiet country highway in the middle of the night.

Now, that sounds like solitude to me. I've always wanted a smaller sized bike that I can take on the road, but I love the looks of the Harleys. I don't know much about name brands, but Harley's are beautiful bikes. I have never been on one, but wouldn't mind feeling the wind in my hair and taking in the 360 view as a passenger on one of those. Wheeee!. I think I'd love that.

21. Growing up, I lived right next to the major trackways in my town...

Trains were (and still are) constantly moving through that area 24 hours a day, blowing their horns, loading boxcars, getting repaired, etc. It is a very noisy area. They never bothered me though. I loved to sit and watch them, and if I raised my hand in the air, made a fist, then pulled down a couple of times, the drivers would sound their horns just for me!

We used to sleep outside all the time during the summer too, so one had to be very used to them to be able to do that.

I live in Florida now and there are no tracks anywhere near me. I miss seeing them all the time.

25. The soundest most restful sleep I've ever had has been on trains

There's something about the sensation of rocking and regular clacking, interspersed with the ascending and descending pitch of bells as you approach crossing points and the rush of air that is delightful to fall asleep to. I wouldn't like to live near train tracks, however, as trains can be very loud, sudden and shake the entire house.

28. Not to mention the fact that they can

really hurt you if you get your shoe stuck on the tracks and the train can't slow down. I've always had horrbile images pop up in my head if I see train tracks in the daytime. Forget nighttime. I don't even like the sound of them when they are miles away. It's scary and creepy to me.
