Let's play Survival Kit!
Anyone ever listen to Leonard Lopate's Survival Kit?

Leonard Lopate welcomes a single guest for a half-hour discussion about what ten things s/he would you want to have if stranded either on a desert island or in a snowed-in cabin.

First, would you pick the island or the cabin?

What 10 things would you want to have with you. (No people! And it's a given that you'll have enough food. Also, on the show, it's a given that you'll have a Bible...but I think that's weird, so if you want one you have to list it.)

I would pick the snowed-in cabin.

1. Guitar
2. Pictures of my baby
3. Drawing paper, pencils and pens
4. Dostoevsky's Demons--maybe I'll finally finish it.
5. TV, DVD Player and all of Cronenberg's movies
6. Stereo and complete works of Throwing Muses, Kristin Hersh and 50 Foot Wave
7. Computer/Internet
8. Quilting stuff
9. Scotch
10. Chocolate

1. Wow, I feel so absolutely poor.
I don't even have that much stuff in my house.
:D

My list would look like this.
Surfboard, guitar, and lots of books.

4. You can request anything!
I don't think you have to own it. You can just ask for anything!

9. Oooohhh, In that case
I would like to add about a 16 foot skiff with a 25 hp motor. To get out to the waves without paddling.

I like how you include that even though you're all by yourself. I think that's very cool.

3. My picks
Desert Isle

1. Laptop
2. 100watt solar charging system
3. Satellite internet link
4. Handheld GPS
5. Coffee machine
6. Case of a variety of coffees. 50% just plain old morning blend/light roast.
7. Case of sweet snacks
8. Case of salty snacks
9. A sunfish (small sailboat to play around with.)
10. A kite with 1000ft of string.

Items 1-4 allow me to call in rescue when I tire of my "exile."

Laptop allows me to access books, news, community, write, play games, etc...

I'd miss coffee. So 5 and 6 cure that.

It's stated I've got food. But is it enjoyable? Or mere sustenance? Items 7 and 8 will add variety.

Item 9 gives me a physical outlet, requires nothing but sea and wind, which I assume to be abundant on a deserted isle. I think I'm functional, but not competent, at sailing, so I'd enjoy the challenge of developing competence.

And I can set up item 10 to add interest and extend myself into the sky. There's something in the curves and twists of a kites string that makes you conscious that we are really at the bottom of a sea of air.

26. In addition to some of the items mentioned above .....

I'd have to have soap and toothbrush/toothpaste. I'd feel too gamey after a week or so to enjoy it otherwise.
