What song has the finest lyrics ever?
Edited on Fri Aug-05-05 04:40 PM by undisclosedlocation
Or to put it another way, top this:

We are the roses in the garden, beauty with thorns among our leaves. To pick a rose you ask your hands to bleed. What is the reason for having roses when your blood is shed carelessly? It must be for something more than vanity.

Believe me, the truth is we're not honest, not the people that we dream. We're not as close as we could be. Willing to grow but rains are shallow. Barren and wind-scattered seed on stone and dry land, we will be. Waiting for the light arisen to flood inside the prison. And in that time kind words alone will teach us, no bitterness will reach us. Reason will be guided another way.

All in time, but the clock is another demon that devours our time in Eden, in our Paradise. Will our eyes see well beneath us, flowers all divine? Is there still time? If we wake and discover in life a precious love, will that waking become more heavenly?

10,000 Maniacs, "Eden"

1. Clownstrike by Elvis Costello
She'll fix you with an iron cross
And cover you up with petals
And hang you up with some amber beads
And four or five precious metals
And in that black flamingo chair
You'll sit among her trophies
And pray to be abandoned
Till you don't know what hope is

CHORUS:
But there's one thing that I had to keep inside
Because I was shaking
Why don't you get some pride
There was a clown strike
And the clowns threw down their tools
But you don't have to play so hard
And I'm nobody's fool
You don't have to go so far
'Cause I love you as you are

The big top is deserted now
And the circus girl rehearses
She knows how to turn their heads
And not fall between two horses
But all that seems a simple step
If only I were able
To love you like I want to do
And not by some times table

CHORUS

And it's pandemonium
For the humble and the mighty
You don't have to tumble for me
Even a clown knows when to strike

Tell me what you want of me
Or are you terrified of failure?
You put on a superstitious face
Behind all this paraphernalia
We're not living in a masquerade
Where you only have three wishes
It isn't easy to see
In a lifetime of mistaken kisses

CHORUS

In this pandemonium
For the humble and the mighty
You don't have to tumble for me
Even a clown knows when to strike

56. Aw, come on! Out of all of EC's tunes, you picked THAT one?!
What about "Lipstick Vogue?" "This Town?" "Hand in Hand?!" "Two Little Hitlers?"

I'm disappointed in you, Pablo.

58. Actually, I was listening to Brutal Youth in the car today
after I posted that. I might have to change my answer to Pony Street to be honest. Even if his music is somewhat in decline, I really think his later period lyrics are far superior to his early stuff. Honest, Paw!

She lives on Pony Street
And they should scatter flowers at her feet
But when they come calling I think it's appalling
They're sober and they're polite
They're deeply respectful when I would expect them
To keep her out all night

That little martinet
Will get her own way yet
If you need instruction in mindless destruction
I'll show you a thing or two
You used to adore me but now my life flashes before me
For you to view

Oh mother, oh mother, sometimes you are so mortifying
From the hole in your leopard skin tights I can tell you've been spying
But your generation confesses before it transgresses
Those Super-8 movies of daddy in your disco dresses

If you're going out tonight
I won't wait up
Reading "Das Kapital"
Watching "Home Shopping Club"
While you're flogging a dead horse
All the way down Pony Street
Where you live after a fashion
All the way down Pony Street
The life and the soul of every indiscretion
That lives on, that lives on, that lives on
Pony Street

Daughter, oh daughter, you know I will love you forever
But spare me the white ankle socks with the lace and the leather
For you and your cartoon threat do no good to resist me
For I am the genuine thing but for you it's just history

If you're going out tonight
How can you be sure
Where you lay your pretty head
Mother may have been before
So you're flogging a dead horse
All the way down Pony Street
Where you live after a fashion
All the way down Pony Street
The life and the soul of every indiscretion
That lives on <5x>
She lives on Pony Street <2x>
She lives on, she lives on <2x>

59. I know you hate this song, but read these lyrics again:
I would send out for assistance but there?s someone on the signal
wire
And the corporation logo is flashing on and off in the sky
They're putting all your names in the forbidden book
I know what they?re doing but I don't want to look

You think they're so dumb, you think they're so funny
Wait until they've got you running to the
Night rally, night rally, night rally

Everybody's singing with their hand on their heart
About deeds done in the darkest hours
That's just the sort of catchy little melody
To get you singing in the showers

Oh, I know that I'm ungrateful
I've got it lying on a plate
And I'm not buying my share of souvenirs
You can stand to attention
You can pray to your uncle
Only get that chicken out of here
Everyone gets armbands and 3-d glasses
Some are in the back room
And they're taking those night classes

You think they're so dumb, you think they're so funny
Wait until they've got you running to the
Night rally, night rally, night rally

See? Give me THAT anyday over those clever little homilies on the later stuff.

You are the dancing queen, young and sweet, only seventeen
Dancing queen, feel the beat from the tambourine
You can dance, you can jive, you're fulla shit and I hate you.
See that girl, watch that scene, dig in the dancing queen

You really gotta sing it out loud with that lyric....tis...puh...beautiful.

2. Marylin Manson "The Beautiful People", so prescient.
"The Beautiful People"

I don't want you and I don't need you
Don't bother to resist, I'll beat you
It's not your fault that you're always wrong
The weak ones are there to justify the strong

The beautiful people, the beautiful people
It's all relative to the size of your steeple
You can't see the forest for the trees
You can't smell your own shit on your knees

There's no time to discriminate,
Hate every motherfucker
That's in your way

Hey you, what do you see?
Something beautiful, something free?
Hey you, are you trying to be mean?
If you live with apes man, it's hard to be clean

The worms will live in every host
It's hard to pick which one they eat most

The horrible people, the horrible people
It's as anatomic as the size of your steeple
Capitalism has made it this way,
Old-fashioned fascism will take it away

There's no time to discriminate,
Hate every motherfucker
That's in your way

The beautiful people
The beautiful people
The beautiful people

4. Morrissey's "Seasick, Yet Still Docked" (that song makes me ache)
I am a poor freezingly cold soul
So far from where
I intended to go
Scavenging through life's very constant lulls
So far from where I'm determined to go

Wish I knew the way to reach the one I love
There is no way ...
I wish I had the charm to attract the one I love
But you see, I've got no charm
Oh ...

Tonight I've consumed much more than I can hold
Oh, this is very clear to you
And you can tell I have never really loved
You can tell, by the way, I sleep all day

And all of my life no-one gave me anything
No-one has ever given me anything, ah ...
My love is as sharp as a needle in your eye
You must be such a fool
To pass me by

5. Time - Pink Floyd
Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for something or someone to show you the way

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find
Ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it’s sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you’re older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribble lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone the song is over, thought I’d something more to say

7. Not to be argumentive, but not certain what defines 'finest lyrics'
The songs listed so far contain I consider interesting poetry (I am not familiar with any of these songs), but I'm not certain how "fine" the lyrics are. Thought provoking? romantic? anti-hero? patterns of life? social or political commentary?

and is the other qualifer rock and roll genre?

It's very true that if you don't happen to know the song it's next to impossible to imagine it in a musical setting just from the lyrics. The one I offered is a very lovely song with especially pretty music, but because Ms. Merchant affects a Marlene Dietrich/ Edith Piaf attack, it's necessary to read the lyrics to have a clear idea what in hell she's singing. I did and my jaw dropped; it is not unfair to say that I reeled in awe. All these years later, I still do.

28. Positive song--"Ordinary Miracles"
by the Bergmans

Change can come on tiptoe
Love is where it starts
It resides, often hides
Deep within our hearts
And just as
Pebbles make a mountain,
Raindrops make a sea,
One day at a time
Change begins with you and me

Ordinary miracles
Happen all around,
Just by giving and receiving
Comes belonging and believing
Every sun that rises
Never rose before,
Each new day leads the way
Through a different door

And we can all be quiet heroes
Living quiet days,
Walking through the world
Changing it in quiet ways,
Ordinary miracles
Like candles in the dark,
Each and every one of us
Lights a spark

And the walls can tumble
And the mountains can move,
The winds and the tide can turn,

Yes, ordinary miracles
One for every star,
No lightning bolt or clap or thunder
Only joy and quiet wonder,
Endless possibilities
Right before our eyes,
Oh, see the way a miracle multiplies,

Now hope can spring eternally
Plant it and it grows,
Love is all that's necessary
Love, in its extraordinary way,
Makes ordinary miracles
Every blessed day.

Very powerful if sung by the late Nancy Lamott or by Maureen McGovern

9. Wow,
I am on a completely different track than you guys...

Ripple- Greatful Dead

If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung
Would you hear my voice come through the music
Would you hold it near as it were your own?

It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken
Perhaps they're better left unsung
I don't know, don't really care
Let there be songs to fill the air

(Chorus)

Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
Nor wind to blow

Reach out your hand if your cup be empty
If your cup is full may it be again
Let it be known there is a fountain
That was not made by the hands of men

There is a road, no simple highway
Between the dawn and the dark of night
And if you go no one may follow
That path is for your steps alone

(Chorus)

You who choose to lead must follow
But if you fall you fall alone
If you should stand then who's to guide you?
If I knew the way I would take you home

10. "I Am a Rock" by Simon & Garfunkel
A winter’s day
In a deep and dark december;
I am alone,
Gazing from my window to the streets below
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow.
I am a rock,
I am an island.
I’ve built walls,
A fortress deep and mighty,
That none may penetrate.
I have no need of friendship; friendship causes pain.
It’s laughter and it’s loving I disdain.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

Don’t talk of love,
But I’ve heard the words before;
It’s sleeping in my memory.
I won’t disturb the slumber of feelings that have died.
If I never loved I never would have cried.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

I have my books
And my poetry to protect me;
I am shielded in my armor,
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb.
I touch no one and no one touches me.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

And a rock feels no pain;
And an island never cries.

13. Crucifixion by Phil Ochs
Devastatingly beautiful song about hero worship and hero killing in America.

And the night comes again to the circle studded sky
The stars settle slowly, in loneliness they lie
'Till the universe expodes as a falling star is raised
Planets are paralyzed, mountains are amazed
But they all glow brighter from the briliance of the blaze
With the speed of insanity, then he dies.

In the green fields a turnin', a baby is born
His cries crease the wind and mingle with the morn
An assault upon the order, the changing of the guard
Chosen for a challenge that is hopelessly hard
And the only single sound is the sighing of the stars
But to the silence and distance they are sworn

So dance dance dance
Teach us to be true
Come dance dance dance
'Cause we love you

Images of innocence charge him go on
But the decadence of destiny is looking for a pawn
To a nightmare of knowledge he opens up the gate
And a blinding revelation is laid upon his plate
That beneath the greatest love is a hurricane of hate
And God help the critic of the dawn.

So he stands on the sea and shouts to the shore,
But the louder that he screams the longer he's ignored
For the wine of oblivion is drunk to the dregs
And the merchants of the masses almost have to be begged
'Till the giant is aware, someone's pulling at his leg,
And someone is tapping at the door.

To dance dance dance
Teach us to be true
Come dance dance dance
'Cause we love you

Then his message gathers meaning and it spreads accross the land
The rewarding of his pain is the following of the man
But ignorance is everywhere and people have their way
Success is an enemy to the losers of the day
In the shadows of the churches, who knows what they pray
For blood is the language of the band.

The Spanish bulls are beaten; the crowd is soon beguiled,
The matador is beautiful, a symphony of style
Excitement is estatic, passion places bets
Gracefully he bows to ovations that he gets
But the hands that are applauding are slippery with sweat
And saliva is falling from their smiles

So dance dance dance
Teach us to be true
Come dance dance dance
'Cause we love you

Then this overflow of life is crushed into a liar
The gentle soul is ripped apart and tossed into the fire.
First a smile of rejection at the nearness of the night
Truth becomes a tragedy limping from the light
All the heavens are horrified, they stagger from the sight
As the cross is trembling with desire.

They say they can't believe it, it's a sacreligious shame
Now, who would want to hurt such a hero of the game?
But you know I predicted it; I knew he had to fall
How did it happen? I hope his suffering was small.
Tell me every detail, I've got to know it all,
And do you have a picture of the pain?

So dance dance dance
Teach us to be true
Come dance dance dance
'Cause we love you

Time takes her toll and the memory fades
but his glory is broken, in the magic that he made.
Reality is ruined; it's the freeing from the fear
The drama is distorted, to what they want to hear
Swimming in their sorrow, in the twisting of a tear
As they wait for a new thrill parade.

The eyes of the rebel have been branded by the blind
To the safety of sterility, the threat has been refined
The child was created to the slaughterhouse he's led
So good to be alive when the eulogy is read
The climax of emotion, the worship of the dead
And the cycle of sacrifice unwinds.

So dance dance dance
Teach us to be true
Come dance dance dance
'Cause we love you

And the night comes again to the circle studded sky
The stars settle slowly, in loneliness they lie
'Till the universe expodes as a falling star is raised
Planets are paralyzed, mountains are amazed
But they all glow brighter from the briliance of the blaze
With the speed of insanity, then he died.

14. I'd love to change the world
Everywhere is freaks and hairies
Dykes and fairies, tell me where is sanity
Tax the rich, feed the poor
Till there are no rich no more

I’d love to change the world
But I don’t know what to do
So I’ll leave it up to you

Population keeps on breeding
Nation bleeding, still more feeding economy
Life is funny, skies are sunny
Bees make honey, who needs money, monopoly

I’d love to change the world
But I don’t know what to do
So I’ll leave it up to you

World pollution, there’s no solution
Institution, electrocution
Just black and white, rich or poor
Them and us, stop the war

I’d love to change the world
But I don’t know what to do
So I’ll leave it up to you

Sorta fits these days.

49. absolutely the best!
i'm a lyrics fan - by far most of the music i love (excepting mozart, sibelius, and dvorak) appeals to me lyrically, and i love thousands of songs. but, imagine is quite possibly the perfect song, lyrically speaking.

Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

17. TO LIVE IS TO FLY

by Townes Van Zandt

I won't say I love you, babe
I won't say I need you, babe
But I'm gonna' get you, babe
And I will not do you wrong
Living's mostly wasting time
And I waste my share of mine
But it never feels too good
So let's don't take too long
Well, you're soft as glass and I'm a gentle man
We got the sky to talk about
And the world to lie upon

Days up and down they come
Like rain on a conga drum
Forget most, remember some
But don't turn none away
Everything is not enough,
And nothing is too much to bear
Where you've been is good and gone
All you keep is the getting there
Well, to live's to fly, both low and high
So shake the dust off of your wings
And the sleep out of your eyes

It's goodbye to all my friends
It's time to leave again
Here's to all the poetry
And the pickin' down the line
I'll miss the system here
The bottom's low and the treble's clear
But it don't pay to think too much
On things you leave behind
Well, I may be gone, but it won't be long
I'll be bringing back the melody
And the rhythm that I find

We all got holes to fill.
Those holes are all that's real
Some fall on you like a storm
Sometimes you dig your own
The choice is yours to make
The time is yours to take
Some dive into the sea
Some toil upon the stone
Well, to live's to fly, both low and high
So shake the dust off of your wings
And the sleep out of your eye
Shake the dust off of your wings
And the tears out of your eye

18. Loving You by Minnie Ripperton
Lovin' You - Minnie Riperton

Lovin' you is easy cause you're beautiful
Makin' love with you is all i wanna do
Lovin' you is more than just a dream come true
And everything that i do is out of lovin' you
La la la la la la la... do do do do do

No one else can make me feel
The colors that you bring
Stay with me while we grow old

And we will live each day in springtime
Cause lovin' you has made my life so beautiful
And every day my life is filled with lovin' you

Lovin' you i see your soul come shinin' through
And every time that we oooooh

20. Blew it Again by Blue Rodeo

Blue Rodeo

Blew It Again

You can live in the house and I will find
a little place around the corner
trouble comes from the strangest quarters
it snuck up on us now without a warning

Every night I hang my head outside into the stars
it's a wonder I can even talk at all

I walk by kids that hang on corners tripping out
afraid of what they'll miss
late at night I hear other voices crying out
I never wanted this

I played you all my favourite songs
catch you when you fall
you look at me saying that's not it at all

Oh my I can't help wondering why I blew it again
I let you down
I watched your tears come splashing all around
all my life I feel like I've been blind
but the moments that shine
are so hard to find

Hey look those northern lights are dancing
come on out and we'll sit here on the lawn
we won't talk we'll only listen
maybe we can stop what's going on

Every night we look out on what's left of all our dreams
it's a wonder we still can talk at all

Oh my I can't help wondering why I blew it again
I let you down
I watched your tears come splashing on the ground
all my life I feel like I've been blind
but the moments that shine
are so hard to find

21. "You Make Your Heaven & Hell Right Here On Earth" (Temptations)
Born into this world a baby, your mind is clear as the air.
(Time passing)
You learn to walk and talk.
(Time passing)
You learn right from wrong.
(Time passing)
You leave home seeking a life of your own.

I'm tellin' ya the natural facts for what it's worth,
You make your own heaven and hell right here on earth.

(Time passing)
And your values change,
Life becomes a strange, confusing game
Suddenly, you want the finer things in life.
But you find it takes lots of hard work and sacrifice.

Now you're standing at the crossroads of life.
To satisfy your personal wants,
Will you do wrong or will you do right?
One thing you must admit, and you know it's true;
The final decision is still up to you.

I'm tellin' ya the natural facts for what it's worth,
You make your own heaven and hell right here on earth.

Life is a giant invisible scale with two sides: good and bad.
You and your beliefs are the weights.
The things you do each day determine the balance.
Your conscience is a flawless judge and jury
The only question is what do you want.

I'm tellin' ya the natural facts for what it's worth,
You make your own heaven and hell right here on earth.

23. Almost every other Bob Dylan song, but my favorite is:
The Times They are a Changin'

Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'.
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'.
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin'.
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'.

The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin'.
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin'.

you know, "your sons and your daughters are beyond your command?"
the kid is 14. He's dangerous.
he downloaded a SHITLOAD of Dylan and now wants to discuss songs like "When the Ship Comes IN" and "The lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll."
I'm frightened.

is one of the most rousing songs in American history, with portions of its lyrics becoming titles of several books. In its time, I would say its lyrics were maybe equalled in their ability to stir an entire people as the Marseillaise to the French.

26. "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen.
Well I heard there was a secret chord
that David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do ya?
Well it goes like this:
The fourth, the fifth, the minor fall and the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah

Well your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew ya
And She tied you to her kitchen chair
And She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah

Well Baby I've been here before
I´ve seen this room, and I've walked this floor,
You know, I used to live alone before I knew you
And I've seen your flag on the marble arch
And Love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah

Well there was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show that to me do ya
But remember when I moved in you
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah

Maybe there is a God above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at somebody who outdrew ya
And it's not a cry that you can hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah

You say I took the name in vain
But I don't even know the name
And if I did, well really, what's it to ya?
There's a blaze of light in every word
It doesn't matter which you heard:
The holy or the broken 'Hallelujah'

Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel so I tried to touch
I told the truth, I didn't come to fool ya
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but "Hallelujah"

Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah (fade)

75. So is virtually every song of Leonard Cohen...
...especially his first album. The only problem would be picking a single song, although, for the moment, I'll go with Teachers...

I met a woman long ago
her hair the black that black can go,
"Are you a teacher of the heart?"
Soft she answered "no."

I met a girl across the sea,
her hair the gold that gold can be,
"Are you a teacher of the heart?"
"Yes, but not for thee."

I met a man who lost his mind
in some lost place I had to find,
"follow me" the wise man said,
but he walked behind.

I walked into a hospital
where none was sick and none was well,
when at night the nurses left
I could not walk at all.

Morning came and then came noon,
dinner time a scalpel blade
lay beside my silver spoon.

Some girls wander by mistake
into the mess that scalpels make.
"Are you the teachers of my heart?"
"We teach old hearts to break."

One morning I woke up alone,
the hospital and the nurses gone.
"Have I carved enough my Lord?"
"Child, you are a bone."

I ate and ate and ate,
no, I did not miss a plate, well
"How much do these suppers cost?"
"We'll take it out in hate."

I spent my hatred every place,
on every work, on every face,
someone gave me wishes
and I wished for an embrace.

Several girls embraced me, then
I was embraced by men,
"Is my passion perfect?"
"No, do it once again."

I was handsome I was strong,
I knew the words of every song.
"Did my singing please you?"
"No, the words you sang were wrong."

Who is it whom I address,
who takes down what I confess?
"Are you the teachers of my heart?"
"We teach old hearts to rest."

Oh teachers, are my lessons done?
I cannot do another one.
They laughed and laughed and said, "Well child,
are your lessons done?
are your lessons done?
are your lessons done?"

Although, at other times, I'd pick Stories of the Street, or, if I'm really in a perverse mood, Master Song.

Finest Lyrics? How about a top ten

God Loves A Drunk (Richard Thompson)
Al Bowlly's In Heaven (Richard Thompson)
Better Place To Be (Harry Chapin)
Corey's Coming (Harry Chapin)
Winter (Tori Amos)
Cradle To The Grave (Johnny Dowd)
Belong (REM)
Wind Up (Jethro Tull)
Arrow (Cheryl Wheeler)
When She's Gone (Mary Chapin Carpenter)

I'm probably forgetting one or two that belong in the list but these ten come to mind.

32. Something happening here
There's something happening here
What it is ain't exactly clear
There's a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware

I think it's time we stop, children, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down

There's battle lines being drawn
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind

I think it's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down

What a field-day for the heat
A thousand people in the street
Singing songs and carrying signs
Mostly say, hooray for our side

It's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down

Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid
You step out of line, the man come and take you away

37. Will so... ever is today...and anything goes...
TOM TOM CLUB 1981

Genius Of Love

What you gonna do when you get out of jail?
I'm gonna have some fun
What do you consider fun?
Fun, natural fun

I'm in heaven
With my boyfriend, my laughing boyfriend
There's no beginning and there is no end
Time isn't present in that dimention
He'll take my arm
When we're walkin', rolling and rocking
It's one time I'm glad I'm not a man
Feels like I'm dreaming, but I'm not sleeping

I'm in heaven
With the maven of funk mutation
Clinton's musicians such as Bootsy Collins
Raise expectations to a new intention
No one can sing
Quite like Smokey, Smokey Robinson
Wailin' and shakin' to Bob Marley
Reggae's expanding with Sly and Robbie

All the weekend
Boyfriend was missing
I surely miss him
The way he'd hold me in his warm arms
We went insane when we took cocaine.

Stepping in a rhythm to a Kurtis Blow
Who needs to think when your feet just go
With a hiditihi and a hipitiho
Who needs to think when your feet just go ...
Who needs to think when your feet just go ...
James Brown, James Brown
James Brown, James Brown

If you see him
Please remind him, unhappy boyfriend
Well he's the genius of love
He's got a greater depth of feeling
Well he's the genius of love
He's so deep.

39. "What's Going On" by Marvin Gaye
relevant as hell in 1970, even more relevant today IMHO.
======

Mother, mother, there's too many of you crying
Brother, brother, brother, there's far too many of you dying
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today, hey

Father, father, we don't need to escalate
You see, war is not the answer, for only love can conquer hate
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today, oh

Picket lines - sister - and picket signs - sister
Don't punish me - sister - with brutality - sister
Talk to me - sister - so you can see - sister
Oh, what's goin' on - what's goin' on, what's goin' on - what's goin' on
Heah, what's goin' on - what's goin' on, oh, what's goin' on - what's goin' on
Ah ah - ay-ay-ay-ay-ay - right on - right on - ay-ay-ay-ay-ay

Mother, mother, everybody thinks we're wrong
Oh, but who are they to judge us
Simply 'cause our hair is long
Oh, you know we've got to find a way
To bring some understanding here today, oh oh oh

Picket lines - brother - and picket signs - brother
Don't punish me - brother - with brutality - brother
Come on, talk to me - brother - so you can see - brother
Now what's goin' on - what's goin' on, yeah, what's goin' on - what's goin' on
Tell me what's goin' on - what's goin' on,
I'll tell you now what's goin' on - what's goin' on
Ooooh - right on - right on - ay-ay-ay-ay-ay

40. wow, there's so many but still partial to: ramona ~
Ramona, come closer,
Shut softly your watery eyes.
The pangs of your sadness
Shall pass as your senses will rise.
The flowers of the city
Though breathlike, get deathlike at times.
And there's no use in tryin'
T' deal with the dyin',
Though I cannot explain that in lines.

Your cracked country lips,
I still wish to kiss,
As to be under the strength of your skin.
Your magnetic movements
Still capture the minutes I'm in.
But it grieves my heart, love,
To see you tryin' to be a part of
A world that just don't exist.
It's all just a dream, babe,
A vacuum, a scheme, babe,
That sucks you into feelin' like this.

I can see that your head
Has been twisted and fed
By worthless foam from the mouth.
I can tell you are torn
Between stayin' and returnin'
On back to the South.
You've been fooled into thinking
That the finishin' end is at hand.
Yet there's no one to beat you,
No one t' defeat you,
'Cept the thoughts of yourself feeling bad.

I've heard you say many times
That you're better 'n no one
And no one is better 'n you.
If you really believe that,
You know you got
Nothing to win and nothing to lose.
From fixtures and forces and friends,
Your sorrow does stem,
That hype you and type you,
Making you feel
That you must be exactly like them.

I'd forever talk to you,
But soon my words,
They would turn into a meaningless ring.
For deep in my heart
I know there is no help I can bring.
Everything passes,
Everything changes,
Just do what you think you should do.
And someday maybe,
Who knows, baby,
I'll come and be cryin' to you.

I was a captain and you was a maiden.

I was a Catholic. You was a Pagan.

They said it wouldn't work - they all agreed.

I couldn't get a job and you couldn't read.

All's I can do is sail this ship.

No ship needed me.

What a fine mess indeed.

43. Mel C's "Feel the Sun"
From her "Northern Star" album.

I found this song to be truly uplifting for me, especially when I got out of the mental hospital while fighting a terrible bout with depression:

These thoughts can be evil and they often deceive
Gotta believe that I can overcome
My fears are the worst and they always return
I never learn
Feel like I don't belong

Lost in the wreckage
Of a million bad dreams
Hard to function
I just need some routine
God, it's obscene
When did they stop the fun?

I knew that something must be done
To save the person I'd become
That's why I had to run away

Feel the sun
Waves crash like my emotion
Life has begun
Now I will be safe from the storm
I found the one
This angel's my salvation
I'm feeling strong
You will be there if I fall

Guilt is no use it will tarnish your soul
Just let it go
The battle will soon be won
Cold in the shadow of who I should be
There's a fire burning deep inside me
Helping me see
Only I hold the key

And now I stand here unafraid
Proud of everything I've made
That's why I had to run away

Feel the sun
Waves crash like my emotion
Life has begun
Now I will be safe from the storm
I found the one
This angel's my salvation
I'm feeling strong
You will be there if I fall

There's so much energy
At last I can be free
I am the person I was looking for

Feel the sun
Waves crash like my emotion
Life has begun
Now I will be safe from the storm
I found the one
This angel's my salvation
I'm feeling strong I'll never fall
You are there when I call

45. "Forty-six & 2" by Tool has been my favorite for quite a while now
My shadow's
Shedding skin and
I've been picking
Scabs again.
I'm down
Digging through
My old muscles
Looking for a clue.

I've been crawling on my belly
Clearing out what could've been.
I've been wallowing in my own confused
And insecure delusions
For a piece to cross me over
Or a word to guide me in.
I wanna feel the changes coming down.
I wanna know what I've been hiding in

My shadow.
Change is coming through my shadow.
My shadow's shedding skin
I've been picking
My scabs again.

I've been crawling on my belly
Clearing out what could've been.
I've been wallowing in my own chaotic
And insecure delusions.

I wanna feel the change consume me,
Feel the outside turning in.
I wanna feel the metamorphosis and
Cleansing I've endured within

My shadow
Change is coming.
Now is my time.
Listen to my muscle memory.
Contemplate what I've been clinging to.
Forty-six and two ahead of me.

I choose to live and to
Grow, take and give and to
Move, learn and love and to
Cry, kill and die and to
Be paranoid and to
Lie, hate and fear and to
Do what it takes to move through.

I choose to live and to
Lie, kill and give and to
Die, learn and love and to
Do what it takes to step through.

See my shadow changing,
Stretching up and over me.
Soften this old armor.
Hoping I can clear the way
By stepping through my shadow,
Coming out the other side.
Step into the shadow.
Forty six and two are just ahead of me.

46. I'm sure younger people will criticize me for this, but . . .
The lyrics to Hotel California are, or were, really fine.

Yea, I know, I get sick of 'em too, from time to time.

48. Barnes and Barnes - Fish Heads
Fish heads fish heads
Roly poly fish heads
Fish heads fish heads
Eat them up
Yum

In the morning laughing happy fish heads
In the evening floating in the soup

Ask a fish head anything you want to
They won't answer they can't talk

I took a fish head out to see a movie
Didn't have to pay to get it in

They can't play baseball they don't wear sweaters
They're not good dancers they don't play drums

Roly poly fish heads are never seen
Drinking cappuccino in Italian restaurants
with Oriental women

Yeah.

51. "Hot Summer Night" Meat Loaf.
It doesnt get much better than this IMHO.

It was a hot summer night
and the beach was burning.
There was fog crawling over the sand.
When I listen to your heart
I hear the whole world turning.
I see the shooting stars falling
through your trembling hands.

You were licking your lips
and your lipstick shining.
I was dying just to ask for a taste.
We were lying together in a silver lining
by the the light of the moon.
You know there's not another moment
Not another moment
Not another moment to waste.

You hold me so close that my knees grow weak.
But my soul is flying high above the ground.
I'm trying to speak but no matter what I do
I just can't seem to make any sound.

And then you took the words right out of my mouth.
Oh it must have been while you were kissing me.
You took the words right out of my mouth.
And I swear it's true,
I was just about to say I love you.
And then you took the words right out of my mouth.
Oh it must have been while you were kissing me.
You took the words right out of my mouth.
And I swear it's true,
I was just about to say I love you.

Now my body is shaking like a wave on the water
And I guess that I'm beginning to grin.
Oh we're finally alone and we can do what we want to.
The night is young
And Ain't no-one gonna know where you
No-one gonna know where you
No-one's gonna know where you've been.
You were licking your lips
and your lipstick shining.
I was dying just to ask for a taste.
We were lying together in a silver lining
by the the light of the moon.
You know there's not another moment
Not another moment
Not another moment to waste.

52. Urge for Going - Joni Mitchell
beautiful, haunting lyrics...

I awoke today and found the frost perched on the town
It hovered in a frozen sky and it gobbled summer down
When the sun turns traitor cold
And all the trees are shivering in a naked row
I get the urge for going but I never seem to go

I get the urge for going, when the meadow grass is turning brown
and summertime is falling down and winter's closing in

I had me a man in summertime, he had summer-colored skin
And not another girl in town my darling's heart could win
But when the leaves fell on the ground
And bully winds came around and pushed them face down in the snow
He got the urge for going and I had to let him go

He got the urge for going when the meadow grass was turning brown
And summertime was falling down and winter was closing in

Now the warriors of winter they give a cold triumphant shout
And all that stays is dying, all that lives is getting out
See the geese in chevron flight
Flappin' and a-racin' on before the snow
They got the urge for going and they've got the wings so they can go

They get the urge for going when the meadow grass is turning brown
And summertime is falling down and winter's closing in

I'll ply the fire with kindling now, I'll pull the blankets up to my chin
I'll lock the vagrant winter out and I'll bolt my wandering in
I'd like to call back summertime
And have her stay for just another month or so
But she's got the urge for going so I guess she'll have to go

She gets the urge for going when the meadow grass is turning brown
And all her empire's falling down and winter's closing in
And I get the urge for going when the meadow grass is turning brown
And summertime is falling down ...

I first heard "Urge for Going" on my car radio as a 16 year old kid on a cold, crisp October night. I was driving home from a high school football game I had played in. Ever since, when I catch that autumn crispness in the air or see geese in chevron flight I think of "Urge for Going" and recall that warm feeling of a great universal vibe I got on that cold, dark night in 1970 as I listened to that song.

76. October 1974 for me...
I had just learned that song when I went hitchhiking from college to my old boarding school in New Hampshire. I had left the freeway and was walking back to the school campus over roads I had walked almost daily for several years, but this was the first time late at night, and I was keenly aware of the silence of the deserted streets and the chill in the air, so different from the indian summer at my college in Maryland. The words of that song slowly came to me. Winter's closin' in, indeed.

Thanks for bringing back that memory.

:-)

61. Husker Du: "Newest Industry"
Husker Du
Newest Industry

Been through mass destruction once, but once was not enough
Said we want a second chance, and all they say is tough
A world where science went too far, there's no way to survive
Why can't we get this thing straightened out, I want to stay alive

They burned and bombed the east and north and there's no place left to go
The sun belt's overcrowded, so let's annex Mexico
The peso's only worth a dime, but they've got all that land
No need for a civil war, we know they'll understand, right?

Is that how you like it?

Factories left unattended, crumbling to the ground
We tried to keep them running, but there's no more oil around
We used it all to fight a war that neither side could win
Vietnam was Little League compared to where we've been

Now we live in caves and huts, and we don't have pay TV
And everyone is signing up for the newest industry
Standard Oil goes solar power, all try to make a buck
So I'll sit around and smoke cigarettes, and I'll babble "What the fuck?"

62. Also, Randy Newman's "Rednecks:"
Last night I saw Lester Maddox on a TV show
With some smart ass New York Jew
And the Jew laughed at Lester Maddox
And the audience laughed at Lester Maddox too
Well he may be a fool but he's our fool
If they think they're better than him they're wrong
So I went to the park and I took some paper along
And that's where I made this song

We talk real funny down here
We drink too much and we laugh too loud
We're too dumb to make it in no Northern town
And we're keepin' the niggers down

We got no-necked oilmen from Texas
And good ol' boys from Tennessee
And colleges men from LSU
Went in dumb. Come out dumb too
Hustlin' 'round Atlanta in their alligator shoes
Gettin' drunk every weekend at the barbecues
And they're keepin' the niggers down

CHORUS
We're rednecks, rednecks
And we don't know our ass from a hole in the ground
We're rednecks, we're rednecks
And we're keeping the niggers down

Now your northern nigger's a Negro
You see he's got his dignity
Down here we're too ignorant to realize
That the North has set the nigger free

Yes he's free to be put in a cage
In Harlem in New York City
And he's free to be put in a cage on the South-Side of Chicago
And the West-Side
And he's free to be put in a cage in Hough in Cleveland
And he's free to be put in a cage in East St. Louis
And he's free to be put in a cage in Fillmore in San Francisco
And he's free to be put in a cage in Roxbury in Boston
They're gatherin' 'em up from miles around
Keepin' the niggers down

CHORUS

65. Strung Out - Analog
Through the coolest haze
Of this dreamlike maze
It has begun
And all I want is you near
With these wounds I've bled
A perfect tone of red
In isolation
Through the swollen eyes of the dying

In my waking dreams
We're all dying
To become what we swore we never would
Now I watch and mourn in bloom

You take the way you know
And I'll take the road unknown
And meet you there
At the end of time
We are frequency
We are tragedy
We are the love
We need to keep us here
We are the dying

We are the hungry ones
We are the waiting
Forever faithful
And when I see you
On the other side
I will not be the same as I was when I was yours

And I wanted you near
We are the dying
We are the lonely ones
We are the haunted
Forever waiting
And when I see you
On the other side
I will not be the same as I was when I was yours

I will not be the same as I was when I was yours

74. "A Whiter Shade of Pale" - Procol Harum
I know it dates me, but there's nothing quite like it.

*********************
We skipped the light fandango
Turned cartwheels ’cross the floor
I was feeling kinda seasick
But the crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
The waiter brought a tray

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale
She said, ’there is no reason
And the truth is plain to see.’
But I wandered through my playing cards
And would not let her be
One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast
And although my eyes were open
They might have just as well’ve been closed
She said, ’I’m home on shore leave,’
Though in truth we were at sea
So I took her by the looking glass
And forced her to agree
Saying, ’you must be the mermaid
Who took neptune for a ride.’
But she smiled at me so sadly
That my anger straightway died

If music be the food of love
Then laughter is it’s queen
And likewise if behind is in front
Then dirt in truth is clean
My mouth by then like cardboard
Seemed to slip straight through my head
So we crash-dived straightway quickly
And attacked the ocean bed

****************

Cheers.

77. Eve Of Destruction
The eastern world it is explodin',
violence flarin', bullets loadin',
you're old enough to kill but not for votin',
you don't believe in war, what's that gun you're totin',
and even the Jordan river has bodies floatin',
but you tell me over and over and over again my friend,
ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.

Don't you understand, what I'm trying to say?
Can't you see the fear that I'm feeling today?
If the button is pushed, there's no running away,
There'll be noone to save with the world in a grave,
take a look around you, boy, it's bound to scare you, boy,
but you tell me over and over and over again my friend,
ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.

Yeah, my blood's so mad, feels like coagulatin',
I'm sittin' here, just contemplatin',
I can't twist the truth, it knows no regulation,
handful of Senators don't pass legislation,
and marches alone can't bring integration,
when human respect is disintegratin',
this whole crazy world is just too frustratin',
and you tell me over and over and over again my friend,
ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.

Think of all the hate there is in Red China!
Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama!
Ah, you may leave here, for four days in space,
but when you return, it's the same old place,
the poundin' of the drums, the pride and disgrace,
you can bury your dead, but don't leave a trace,
hate your next-door-neighbour, but don't forget to say grace,
and you tell me over and over and over and over again my friend,
ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.

81. Man of Constant Sorrow-John Hartford
(chorus) In constant sorrow through his days

I am a man of constant sorrow
I've seen trouble all my day.
I bid farewell to old Kentucky
The place where I was born and raised.

(Chorus) The place where he was born and raised

For six long years I've been in trouble
No pleasures here on earth I found
For in this world I'm bound to ramble
I have no friends to help me now.

(chorus) He has no friends to help him now

It's fare thee well my old lover
I never expect to see you again
For I'm bound to ride that northern railroad
Perhaps I'll die upon this train.

(chorus) Perhaps he'll die upon this train.

You can bury me in some deep valley
For many years where I may lay
Then you may learn to love another
While I am sleeping in my grave.

(chorus) While he is sleeping in his grave.

Maybe your friends think I'm just a stranger
My face you'll never see no more.
But there is one promise that is given
I'll meet you on God's golden shore.

(chorus) He'll meet you on God's golden shore

86. Just about anything by Fiona Apple
From "I Know"

And when the crowd becomes your burden
And you've early closed your curtains,
I'll wait by the backstage door
While you try to find the lines to speak your mind
And pry it open, hoping for an encore
And if it gets too late, for me to wait
For you to find you love me, and tell me so
It's ok, dont need to say it

From "Love Ridden"

Nobody sees when you are lying in your bed
And I wanna crawl in with you
But I cry instead
I want your warm, but it will only make
Me colder when it's over,
So I can't tonight, baby

And the greatest lyric ever, from "Sleep To Dream"

You say love is a hell you cannot bear
And I say gimme mine back and then go there, for all I care
