4. I went to college with a guy who was a Latvian Spy.

He looked to old to be an undergrad and he didn't hang out with the other students. The name I knew him as was Ivars Embreckts.

He was a Latvian.

The next year there was an article in the paper: he was a Latvian spy and had been caught spying by the Russians.

His fate is unknown to me -- this was a few months before the fall of the Berlin wall.

Always creeped me out.

5. I picked up my Mom and sister at the airport last night.

They have spent the summer in England, Latvia, and Lithuania. In fact they spent the last week in Riga, and flew from there to London, and left there yesterday to L.A. and then Portland!

I'll see them tomorrow and I'm looking forward to hearing about their trip.

But I gather from what they were talking about it seems like there's a whole country full of them!

in Minneapolis when all the refugees came over in the 1950s.

He was born in a peasant village called Vecpiebalga, had lots of adventures, and ended up as a high school teacher, attorney, and insurance salesman in Minneapolis.
