A question about Amazon.com

I just ordered a book from them and thought I had ordered a "brand new" book. When I looked at the invoice, it looked like the book was coming from a private seller. Am I receiving this book from a just some dude off the street? I mean is this person a reputable book dealer to be sending me a "brand new" book? Or does "new" in Amazon speak mean "like new". If anybody knows, I'd appreciate the help. I am paying the cost of the book as if it were new. Hope I don't get ripped.

1. If you check out the page you ordered from, it should have a rating

for the vendor and it should tell you if the book you are buying is new or used. I've ordered several books from Amazon, and even the ones that are "used" look brand new. I've never seen used book sold for the same price as a new one though. Does this help or make any sense? It's too early here to be up. LOL

some of the booksellers are quite reputable. look at the seller's feedback rating. i've purchased books directly from amazon and from their resellers and i've had no problems. if they have labeled it, 'like new' however, it may be used. write the seller and ask.

5. Next time, consider using Powell's. I've heard they are blue, but

regardless, they are an excellent source for new and used. If you buy used books, they come straight out of Powell's inventory--no third party sellers.

They have given excellent service and I can trust thee quality every time.

They are THE place to find out-of-print books (and I'm in the book-buying biz, I might add).

8. Its probably a new book

The dealer got a bunch discounted somewhere, publisher sell-out or a bunch of free promo copies, something like that
and he is vending them at Amazon. I get CD's like that sometimes

I sometimes buy from used book stores, so I don't have a problem with used books, but if I buy a book and the seller says it's new, I want it to be new damn it.;)

anyone can sign up to sell at amazon, i do, tho i clearly mark my books as like new, excellent, good, or fair

some sellers are rip-off artists, i once encountered a bad apple at amazon, amazon refunded my $$$ and shut down the seller but lots of people filed complaints about him for non-shipment

Sometimes "new" is just a rating of the condition...as in it's "like new". I've sold things through Amazon before, so if you're buying from the used-section of Amazon, the seller can be just anyone.

If you look for sellers with tens of thousands of rated transactions then those are the people who sell in bulk and may own a bookstore..

12. Sounds like you purchased your book from "Amazon Marketplace"

which connects Amazon users with private sellers.

Once you click on a link that says "Used & New", you're not dealing directly with Amazon.com as the seller; they've now become the middleman connecting you with other vendors using the Amazon website.

Doesn't mean the book isn't new; the condition will tell you that.

I've ordered a lot of stuff from Amazon as well as through their Marketplace and I have never been disappointed at all.

But if you are unhappy, you can file a complaint with Amazon.
