What is your favorite movie??

I was watching TV today when my favorite movie came on today. "It's a Mad Mad Mad world" is my favorite just because of all the stars on the set. Spencer Tracy, Buddy Hackett, Milton Berle, Phil Silvers, Mickey Rooney, William Demerest and Ethel Mermen just to name a few. I have seen this movie at least 25 times since 1980, and it's funnier than hell every time. Some of my other favorites

1, Smokey and the Bandit; Burt Reynolds at his best. Him and Jackie Gleason were a riot.
2, The Longest Day; One of the best WWII films ever made. Again a lot of star power.
3, Patton; Again, another great WWII movie. One of the great lines from the movie. "Rommel, you magnificent bastard, I read your book".
4, Beaches; Yeah, I'm a sucker for sentimental buddy buddy movies. I also love Bette Midler. The story was OK, but I can hear Midler sign everyday.
5, Saving Private Ryan; The most realistic WWII movie I have ever seen. Tom Hanks was brilliant.
6, Apollo 13; Speaking of brilliant, Ron Howard's direction was just that. Even though I knew the outcome, I was on the edge of my seat nonetheless.
7, Pride of the Yankees; I am a Yankee fan, and I wished I saw Lou Gehrig hit. The movie is quite sappy, but Gary Cooper was great.
8, Fahrenheit 911; Did I believe everything in the movie? No. But Michael Moore pegged the Bushies on this one.
9, Dances with Wolves; A lot of people I know didn't like this movie, but I did. Kevin Costner was great. It was a tossup for Costner between this movie and Field of Dreams.
10, Titanic: The hit song was good enough. Celine Dion could live off that song, but James Cameron made a great movie as well.

Honorable mention; These weren't movies, but mini series. Both North and South, the civil war series and War and Rememberence, the WWII series were fantastic as well.

The Cook The Thief His Wife Her Lover - a vicious satire on neoconservatism and anti-intellectualism.

Urbania - strange, touching, weird, heartbreaking.

Now Voyager - sad and strangely hopeful and so fucking romantic.

After Hours - brilliant, funny, disturbing and it'll eat into your head for months.

To Kill A Mockingbird - heart, soul, and an unbelievable movie. The loss of innocence has never been done better, because not only is it lost it is regained from a more adult perspective.

9. They say It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World...

...helped heal the nation after the assassination of JFK. People desperately need to laugh in times of heartbreak, as Preston Sturges pointed out in Sullivan's Travels so many years ago.

It's hard to pick just one favorite movie, as there are so many I can watch again and again and never tire of. But Casablanca is the keeper. For me, it's not mainly a love story but a story of friendship and rediscovered ideals, all delivered by an amazing cast I adore, particularly the supporting players. Raise your hand if you are hooked on Claude Rains!

every Christmas Eve with my Dad. The rest of the family drifted off to bed or other pursuits. But we stayed up and watched Alastair Sim's "A Christmas Carol". One of the Chicago stations showed it every year on Christmas Eve.

29. "The Exorcist" is the best...

...film ever made, IMHO. The classic story of the confilict between good and evil. Exceptional direction, script, casting...I've seen it about 35 times ("and it keeps gettin funnier every time...! ~ Beetlejuice) and I still haven't found a thing I would change in it.

"Deliverance" comes in second in my Best Film category. James Dickey oversaw the movie adaptation of his novel, and even appears at the end of the film ("You boys don't come back down here, okay?") It is a true Southern novel full of the symbolism of Faulkner and O'Connor come to life. The performances by Voight, Beatty, and yes, Reynolds, are tremendous. No matter how many times I've seen it, when Ned Beatty says at the end, around a table of local folks, "Boy, this corn sure is special," I start to lose it.

Just to prove I'm not twisted, "Young Frankenstein" is #3 on my list...

31. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Nicholson was AMAZING in this film. The book was even better. Got a 92 on my research paper on it in junior year of highschool (2003-2004) - talked about how it was a response to the conformity of the 50s. Gotta read the book if you haven't already - it's not too long (around 250-275 pages) and it's awesome.
