Personally I have an Alfa Romeo 147 5-door diesel. It cost far too much for a hatchback, but it's pretty good. And looks good too.

And contrary to reports in the news, Jennae hasn't had any problems on the road with "conking" out. I got mine in March 2004, so I think she wasn't among the ones that had to be recalled.

We also put XM radio in it to run through the navigation system. I love it--and she's as roomy as a Camary.

44. Honda Civic Del Sol S and Ford Escape Hybrid

Civic Del Sol S. What's not to like about a 2-seater convertable that gets 40 mpg?
Too bad Honda doesn't make them anymore. In fact, AFAIK, nobody makes
anything like this anymore.
All the current 2-seaters have much bigger engines and use about 50% more gas.

What I'd really like to see is a Del Sol hybrid. It would probably get
60 mpg and Honda would sell a zillion of them.

Ford Escape Hybrid. Yes, it's an SUV. We figured out we needed one
after we kept bashing the underside of our old Civic on rocks while
driving over some of the "roads" we travel on. Only 2 ways to get
ground clearance, an SUV or a pickup. Considered a pickup just because,
but pickups burn even more gas than SUVs. Got a RAV4, which was
the most fuel-efficient SUV at the time. Traded for the Escape Hybrid
last November. Nice upgrade. Bigger, better performance, more
comfortable, and considerably better mileage. Around 30 mpg, compared
to the low 20's for our old RAV4.
Creeps along on electric power at low speeds, so it doesn't pollute
or burn gas when stuck in traffic.
The electric motor is also a lot more responsive than any gas engine
can be, making for very good performance with the gas and electric working together.


(The one area in which the RAV4 was much better was parking. It was
the 2-door RAV4, very short and with an excellent turning radius. I
used to get that thing into the tiniest of parking spaces. I actually
got it into a space where it was touching the cars in front and behind
once. That actually prompted some applause from the sidewalk :-))

It took quite a few months to learn how to accelerate properly. Zero to 60 in less than six seconds without any effort.

I recently saw a C70R and drooled for several hours after. Wouldn't be very useful in the Northwest, but dang it was a beautiful Volvo.

4-wheel drive jeep (I don't think this exact model exists in the States). It's 12 years old and still has under 49,000 miles on the clock and it's not a gas guzzler.

We live high up on the Yorkshire moors with narrow, twisting roads and get snowed in in the winter so we need a 4-wheel drive vehicle, but damned if I was going to get some big monster thing like a Land Rover.
