Nashville reaches new low in cynical flag-waving manipulation of the base
"Arlington" by Trace Adkins. One of the many many less charming aspects of living in the South is that sometimes you'll run up against restauranteurs that think that people still listen to country. Lucky me. This little love was playing at lunch today; somehow I managed not to throw up. Nice warm voice, somewhat reminiscent of Waylon or Hoyt Axton or pretty much any of those guys; the lyrics, however, are straight out of the Mighty Wurlitzer. Excerpts:
I never thought that this is where I'd settle down.
I thought I'd die an old man back in my hometown.
They gave me this plot of land,
Me and some other men, for a job well done.

There's a big White House sits on a hill just up the road.
The man inside, he cried the day they brought me home.
They folded up a flag and told my Mom and Dad:
"We're proud of your son."

And I'm proud to be on this peaceful piece of property.
I'm on sacred ground and I'm in the best of company.
I'm thankful for those thankful for the things I've done.
I can rest in peace;
I'm one of the chosen ones:
I made it to Arlington
...
And I'm proud to be on this peaceful piece of property.
I'm on sacred ground and I'm in the best of company.
I'm thankful for those thankful for the things I've done.
I can rest in peace;
I'm one of the chosen ones:
I made it to Arlington.
...
Yeah, dust to dust,
Don't cry for us:
We made it to Arlington.

I can't guarantee the site won't saddle you with spyware and malware, though. Trust me, he gets the "freedom ain't free" meme in there.

I stress that this would be a great song were it not released in the middle of an illegal war carried out by a criminal who still hasn't been to a single soldier's funeral. Note to freepers: we honor the dead. We tried to honor them while they were still alive by preventing the assclown from getting his war on. I trust that everybody buying this record is heading straight down to the recruiting office to get their own cruciform headstone. (As of this moment, #16 on the country charts, ironically without a bullet.)

2. Ol' Trace looks young enough to serve.........

Put your money where your mouth is there, bud! While you're at it, take Darrell Worley and Toby Keith with ya! You guys give country a bad name.

3. I quit country music after they tried to do in the Dixie Chicks
I never liked it alot. I suppose I could stomach some blue grass, but after the bullshit treatment the Dixie Chicks got, I swore off all of it forever.
The last country music star could have died yesterday, and I wouldn't miss one god damn minute of it.

11. Yes, 95% of Nashville pablum is neo-Eagles, but this is fairly
sophisticated propaganda and mind control. (Musically, yes, it's just pop, as was its great-granddaddy, "God Bless the USA." Another little love.)

7. What I've heard of his new album.............
sounds great. I'm basically a rock/college radio fan, but old country like Johnny, George, Willie and Merle, along true country guys like Dwight Yoakam and (WV's own) Brad Paisley get me going too.

6. Forgive my braindead cutting and pasting...
Didn't mean to get the refrain twice; this is the other verse (couplet, whatever) I was trying to grab:
"And everytime I hear twenty-one guns,
I know they brought another hero home to us."

Obviously, the damn thing affected my brain...

9. What a flaming crock of horseshit!!
There's a big White House sits on a hill just up the road.
The man inside, he cried the day they brought me home.

That "man" inside that White House hasn't shed a single fucking tear for anyone brought home in a coffin, er excuse me, "transfer tube", nor for the American families he's destroyed, nor for the Iraqi civilians and their families.

Hell, I don't think that goddamn chimp is capable of emotion of any kind.

14. Maybe it was written during Bill Clinton's administration
Remember that? The last elected presidency?

Bill probably did cry in those circumstances...at least, he's the only one since Carter who'd have at least come close.

At least the jingoistic songs aren't coming out as furiously now. BTW, Trace hasn't made anything great since More.
