Velvet Underground and young'uns
...Just finished a recording session with a band I've been working with off and on for a few months now. Their genre is more electronic industrial, and they're good kids; maybe not the most musically inclined bunch, but their hearts are in the right spot and they work hard.

Anyway, they are much younger than I am, and we got to chatting about music. Jay, their vocalist, asked me what band made me want to seriously get into music. I told him that there were two: Pink Floyd and Velvet Underground. Now, Floyd they had heard of, but VU was spectacularly unfamiliar. So, I pulled out the VU Gold disc, cued up Heroin, and turn the monitors up to 11....

Oh....how their minds were BLOWN!!!!

There's hope yet, ya'll!

I don't know just where I'm going
But I'm gonna try for the kingdom if I can
'Cause it makes me feel like I'm a man
When I put a spike into my vein
Then I tell you things aren't quite the same
When I'm rushing on my run
And I feel just like Jesus' son
And I guess that I just don't know
And I guess that I just don't know

2. What was the old saying...
Someone said something like "When it came out, the first Velvet Underground album was only bought by a couple hundred people... but every one of them ended up starting a band."

Hugely influential, but going on three generations back, so I'm sure a lot of todays kids don't know what they're about at all.

3. I've heard of the Velvet Underground...
But I don't think I've actually listened to them. Perhaps I should.

4. Never been a big fan, but I like that tune R.E.M. did on the "Green" tour.
The name escapes me now, but it was the last song of the night. It's on "Tourfilm".

6. An understanding of modern music...
... is impossible without first appreciating VU's place in the universe. When I first heard them it finally all began to make sense.

7. only on vinyl

something about remixing to digits takes away from feel of the music. only on vinyl can ya get those pops and clicks of an album that`s been played over and over. album art and liner notes and of course the album size is just right to roll a joint on...

8. What was it Brian Eno said:" Only 100 people bought their albums, but all
those 100 formed bands, and so on..."

Not an exact quote, but you get the gist.
