9. You beat me to it. "I wanted you to see what real courage is,
instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what."

Harper Lee

Go Cindy.

2. The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich...
and I would give an exam to make sure that the book was read thoroughly. Might give some of the less informed among us (not at Du, in the general populace) a clue as to what is happening here, now.

E.g., what we did to the Native Americans (instead of "all hail the conquering hero" stuff). Compelling reading.

10. "Her Smoke Rose Up Forever" by James Tiptree, Jr.
It's a collection of short stories that explores all the potential of life. Tiptree (real name Alice Sheldon) was a Ph.D-level psychologist, a CIA agent, and a world traveller. She Knew Things. If you can, buy this book right now: http://www.powells.com/biblio/2-1892391201-0

36. agreed - this book is an easy read & very accessible
most people wouldn't get 1984 or Animal Farm, To Kill A Mockingbird, Grapes of Wrath, etc.

Franken does it with humor & iron clad facts.

26. The Gate To Women's Country by Sheri Tepper
A novel about the relationships between men and women, about war, about violence, about sexism.

Although recommended to me many times, I ignored it. I'm a gay man. What could male/female relations mean to me? Answer: a lot.

Brilliant and scary. It should be required reading.

Khash.

This country gets screwed in SO many ways by people that do not understand statistics and things like the huge chance of coincidence. The book is about these problems and it gives a great overview of statistics basics.
