ALBANY, N.Y. -- Women in New York City will no longer be able to win concert tickets and other prizes from a radio station by violently slapping each other.
WQHT Hot-97 has agreed to end its "Smackfest" promotion over concerns raised by New York's state athletic commission.
From April of last year through January, Hot-97 sponsored a series of 24 slapping competitions. The hip-hop station offered cash prizes of as much as $5,000 to the winners. Pictures of the women striking each other were run on the station's Web site. The station has agreed to pay $240,000 under a settlement reached with the state.
WQHT is the same station that drew heavy criticism earlier this year when staffers played a parody song mocking victims of last year's tsunami.http://www.wftv.com/news/4825655/detail.html
