I'm sorry... but I am sick of the whole dj, dij culture, mixing and
whatever... It's so old, played, obvious and mainstream. I'm glad a new generation is into it and I do like innovation... but there is so much crap, hype and fake shit out there -- that and an ageing but sophisticated music enthusiast like myself just hasn't got the time to weed through it all. I will be happy to never hear the word dj before somebodies first name ever again. I am ready for it to reach its final death throes and become passe, kind of like what happened to heavy metal in the eighties... the way it became such a cartoon of itself. Rant is over.

2. Yeah my head fuckin spins every time I hear someone get all mushy
over the word vinyl, like its a precious metal. Don't get me wrong. I love recrods. A good lp sounds better than a cd in most cases.

3. What happened to metal in the 80s?
It still very much exists in the underground, and about as strong as the '83-'91 scene.

If you're referring to bands like Poison, Warrant, Bon Jovi and Slaughter, those were rock bands, not metal. eMpTyV just called it "metal" because they equated anything that had long hair and distorted guitars as "metal".

Frankly, I wish hip-hop/rap would go back in the underground and all mainstream rap would die a fast death, but that's never going to happen as long as MTV still exists.

8. I hear ya there, Hugh!
I freakin HATE rap and hip hop. I wish it would die a horrible death like Disco did in the late 70's! I think it's ruined music completely! Bring me back the 80's and 90's!

9. A lot of musical styles/scenes are healthier when they are
Edited on Tue Aug-09-05 09:15 AM by eyepaddle
underground. When I was a teen in the mid-eighties I always wondered why metal wasn't more popular than it seemed to be. Then MTV defined metal as Poison and Bon Jovi--and all of a sudden I dodn't want it to be popular anymore! I don't really listen to much modern metal, but it is obviously a lot better off now that it's moved out of the top 40 and back to just its enthusiasts. I do kinda like Iced Earth--too bad the guitarist/brains of the operation is such a right wing ass.

On to the dj scene, I'm just not sure it has become so mainstream it will eat itself (like metal and honestly, grunge--which overtook metal, and then immediately flew into the realm of passe).

Here's my theory, when the die-hards and innovators of any given style/scene look around and ask themselves "WTF? Who ARE all these people?" and then leave it--THAT is when its popularity will wane. Hip hop has managed to avoid having its diehards abandon it, but who knows how long that will continue?

Just my pompous two cents. ;)

12. That's what I meant... bands that were "called" metal.. which were really
all those hair bands. Thanx for clarification. And hip hop should go back to its roots. I miss the experimentation and original themes and topics. It really is folk music.

And it's not hard to find at all.
Try and scratch the surface, you'll find it.

27. Look at it this way.
If I play for people a video of Gary Kasparov's greatest matches, that doesn't make me a chess grand master.

And implying that I have a "closed mind" simply because I disagree with your opinion is patently false, in addition to being a backhanded insult.

But that's fine. I won't lose any sleep over it.

29. That's a totally inaccurate analogy.
They are not simply playing records.
They are mixing/scratching records to make completely new songs.
This is not Paul Oakenfold or someone like that mixing trance records.

You have a closed mind about this particular subject because you refuse to do any research into it.

I wouldn't expect you to lose sleep over it.

than being suprised, enlightened, proven wrong,-- having expectations defied... having faith restored in music/beats... But right now, I am weary and disenchanted so I look to the past. Also, now that I'm older and don't hang out with 15-30 yr olds, music doesn not really come across my plate spontaneously.

16. as an ex DJ myself
I called it quits because I just got sick of the ennui. I was a different type, just playing goth/industrial/EBM music. a couple DJs in my club became such lazy hacks they were laterally playing pre-programed mp3 playlists off a laptop! The music got real bad. EVERY band now sounds exactly alike. It's as if they all share the same nord modular synth with the same presets farting out the same tired beats.

I DJed mainly to promote my own music and be socialable in the scene. I'm an electronic musician that actually plays keyboards *GASP* and I even play guitar on my tracks too *BIGGER GASP* the cookie cutter brand of cut & paste music is tired and lifeless with no human feel whatsoever. It's these "artists" that die quickly and the real talented ones still survive.
