What's the most depressed you've ever been?
I've had a few episodes in my life. When my parents died, of course. When I was struggling to make ends meet and still having utilities turned off. When I was madly in love with someone I shouldn't have been involved with and he wouldn't leave his wife. Sometimes it took years, but I DID come out of it, and life is better than it's ever been.

For those out there who are facing hard times, when you're at the bottom of a well, you can still look up and see the stars.

3. Huh.
I've always been depressed, as long as I can remember, except maybe about a year in college and spending some time with a wonderful man for a couple months a few years back. I used to think it was a normal state of being, that everyone was like this. I know now that this isn't true and I spend every day trying to work myself out of it. It's a hard thing to do, but I can't ever stop trying, not until I die. Not UNLESS I want to die. Which I don't. :grouphug:

But I have had suicidal thoughts in high school and occasionally throughout my life, not because of any events at the time, but rather the lack of connection and love and friendship in my life. But life is always hard.

:)

4. Here's my definition of clinical depression:
Edited on Tue Aug-09-05 01:13 PM by The Backlash Cometh
That point when you realize that death isn't the worse thing that can happen to you.

However, you get over some big depressive episodes and you get a new perspective on life. Every now and again I rediscover or just discover something new and beautiful (and it may be something so small and ordinary like realizing that I worked the garden enough in the last two years to come up with a spectacular butterfly garden this year.) and I just thank God for giving me the strength to get through the bad times, to be able to experience the good moments.

Things have been grim for years, and just when you think it can't possibly get any grimmer, your boss hauls you on the carpet for having such an acerbic personality that your colleagues quit because they can't stand working with you. And then he goes on to tell you that he expects you to continue flailing with this one stupid project for as long as it takes even though you told him two weeks ago you were flailing with it. AND the worst part is that the other thing you've been working on for the last two months? Was the wrong thing and all that work was for naught and you have to start over again from scratch.

On edit: that's not even close to being the biggest low, just the most recent, as in yesterday.

6. The period immediately following the last of my lost pregnancies.
They were all relatively quite far along...and it was a blow. The third one sent me over the edge. I am only grateful that MrG had the will to stick with me. It was an awful time and immediately preceded the death of his father.

7. Of course
when my mother died, but oddly last November really threw me - I care about politics and such, but I was surprised how upsetting the election was for me - I really went through about a month and a half of serious mourning for this country....

8. I have to pick?
Well, I guess a few times in high school were pretty bad. I had one week where my brother moved out of the house in a really ugly situation, my mom was diagnosed with cancer, my girlfriend broke up with me, and I got rejected by my #1 choice of colleges. That was a pretty hard time to go through. Right now is exceptionally hard for me too... I'm in the process of losing my fiancee and I can't find a new job to replace the one that is screwing me more and more every day. I would say that week in high school was worse than right now, except all of this is immediately following what I considered the absolute happiest point of my life, where I truly and honestly did not want a damn thing more and was the most grateful man that walked the earth. I guess the extreme comedown from that is what really bothers me now. I really just need SOMETHING to break right for me right now...

9. After failing at graduate school.
Edited on Tue Aug-09-05 01:28 PM by kick-ass-bob
My entire college (and even some of HS) life the plan was to become a college professor. After not passing the required exams, I did not know what direction my life should take and sat for about 6 months. My confidence was completely shot and I didn't know what I could do. (And I was a VERY confident person beforehand)

November of last year was a close second.

Now I say I control what I can control, and I can't worry about what I cannot control. At least I do not seem to have a chemical imbalance for depression - it was all situational. I feel for those who do.

13. I have never been clinically depressed.
But I had some pretty bad times before I dealt with my drug and alcohol addiction. After that, last November. I guess I have had a pretty good life if those are the worst things that ever happened to me. :knocks on wood:

It's a wonder I didn't have a nervous breakdown:

* My mother passed away that July.

* My dad had died Jan a year before.

* I was also separated and looking to be on my own.

* I was looking for a job, having quit the previous one to help care for my mom

* I took up residence in the family home, becoming a first-time homeowner in the process.

There were many nights I came home, sank to the floor, curled into the fetal position, and cried.

edit: 2nd place would be sept 2002 - sept 2004 when I was laid off.
