Need wedding music help!
OK all you DU music fans, I need help. My son is getting married in 4 weeks and I need to decide what music I want played for our dance. He is bugging me to decide now and, honestly, I don't know.

Some info, he is 29, I am mid-50s, we like a lot of the same music. And country music is not an option, I don't like Country. I like adult contemporary and some of the old stuff, but no big band stuff.

It is tradition that groom and mom dance to a slow tune, so I need something easy to dance and hopefully with appropriate lyrics. My son is taking ballroom dance lessons but I don't dance worth a damn (I know, just follow him).

Anyone have some suggestions?

1. "I Am Your Child" by Barry Manilow
I am your child.
Wherever you go, you take me, too.
Whatever I know, I learn from you.
Whatever I do, you taught me to do.
I am your child.
And I am your chance.
Whatever will come, will come from me.
Tomorrow is won, by winning me.
Whatever I am, you taught me to be.
I am your hope,
I am your chance,
I am your child.

19. yikes
:scared:

That’s all I wanted, something special,
Something sacred in your eyes,
For just one moment, to be bold and naked
At your side

Sometimes I think that you’ll never understand me
Maybe this time is forever, say it can’t be

That’s all you wanted, something special,
Someone sacred in your life
Just for one moment, to be warm and naked
At my side

Sometimes I think that you’ll never understand me
But something tells me together, we’d be happy

I will be your father figure (oh baby)
Put your tiny hand in mine (I’d love to)
I will be your preacher teacher (be your daddy)
Anything you have in mind (it would make me)
I will be your father figure (very happy)
I have had enough of crime (please let me)
I will be the one who loves you
Until the end of time

That’s all I wanted
But sometimes love can be mistaken for a crime
That’s all I wanted just to see my baby’s blue eyes shine
This time I think that my lover understands me
If we have faith in each other
Then we can be strong

I will be your father figure
Put your tiny hand in mine
I will be your preacher teacher
Anything you have in mind
I will be your father figure
I have had enough of crime
I will be the one who loves you
Until the end of time

If you are the desert, I’ll be the sea
If you ever hunger - hunger for me
Whatever you ask for, that’s what I’ll be

So when you remember the ones who have lied
Who said that they cared
But then laughed as you cried
Beautiful darling, don’t think of me

Because all I ever wanted
It’s in your eyes baby, baby
And love can’t lie, no...
(greet me with the eyes of a child)
My love is always telling me so
(heaven is a kiss and a smile)
Just hold on, hold on
I won’t let you go, my baby

I will be your father figure
Put your tiny hand in mine
I will be your preacher teacher
Anything you have in mind
I will be your father figure
I have had enough of crime
So I am gonna love you
Until the end of time
I will be your father
I will be your preacher
I’ll be your daddy
I will be the one who loves you
Until the end of time

23 minutes of something in 11/8 and 12/8 blues shuffle is just right for a mom and son to slow dance to at a wedding reception.

8. It's a tradition for mom and groom to dance a slow song?
I've lived in the Midwest, the East Coast, and Hawaii, and I ain't never been to a wedding - and I've been to a hell of a lot of them - in which that is a tradition.

Not to say you're lying - obviously, wherever you are, I'm sure it is truly a tradition - but it's unusual.

And, you know, traditions are meant to be broken. Not that you need to, mind you, as it seems you are looking forward to it, which is totally cool!

Is it also tradition for the bride and father to dance where you are? It's not anywhere I've been, either, but it seems like it would be with you.

As to songs - one song I've always loved is "Changes", an old Black Sabbath song (that doesn't sound at all like - Sabbath it's a slow waltz ballad, rather beautiful). Though the lyrics are about love, which isn't quite the relationship between you and son, it does fit the theme of both of you entering a time of change.

It's a rather lame offering, I know, but it's all I can come up with.

from "Fiddler on the Roof" Beautiful tune, nice lyrics, appropriate to the occasion, and excellent for waltzing. :D

P. S.: I am NOT one of those people who believe, "The mother of the groom should wear beige and stay out of the way." Strut yo stuff, honey!

24. Third vote for Sunrise, Sunset
Is this the little girl I carried?
Is this the little boy at play?

I don't remember growing older
When did they?

When did she get to be a beauty?
When did he get to be so tall?

Wasn't it yesterday
When they were small?

Sunrise, sunset
Sunrise, sunset
Swiftly flow the days
Seedlings turn overnight to sunflowers
Blossoming even as we gaze

23. That's great suggestion, I love that song,
but hadn't even thought of it. And thanks for the encouragement about not wearing beige etc. Actually, I am wearing black, as are the bridesmaids. The problem is we don't know the bride (only have been around her twice since she and son are in different state) or her family. But, hell, I'm going to go with a good attitude and just enjoy myself and hope that the wedding is perfect for my son and his bride.

15. The perfect song for Mom/Son or Dad/Daughter...
Try to remember the kind of September
When life was slow and oh so mellow.
Try to remember the kind of September
When grass was green and grain was yellow.
Try to remember the kind of September
When you were a tender and callow fellow.
Try to remember and if you remember
then follow
follow.

Try to remember when life was so tender
When noone wept except the willow.
Try to remember when life was so tender
When dreams were kept beside your pillow.
Try to remember when life was so tender
When love was an ember about to billow.
Try to remember and if you remember
then follow
follow.

Deep in December it's nice to remember
Although you know the snow will follow.
Deep in December it's nice to remember
Without a hurt the heart will hollow.
Deep in December
it's nice to remember
The fire of September that made you mellow.
Deep in December our hearts should remember and follow
follow.

I know Gladys Knight recorded it. There's also a Harry Belafonte recording and a number of instrumental cds that include the tune.

We didn't do a separate dance - my father and I started dancing, then we invited others to join in one by one. It was fun and me and my dad didn't occupy the dance floor for an entire song.

We didn't have a dance at our wedding, but if we had, dancing with my dad to an entire song alone while everyone watched would have embarrassed BOTH Dad and me!

29. Sea of Love
I made a 60min mix tape for a friend's wedding in the 80's. This went over big.

Come with me
My love
To the sea
The sea of love

I wanna tell you
Just how much
I love you

Do you remember
When we met
That's the day
I knew you were my pet

I wanna tell you
Just how much
I love you

Come with me
To the sea
of love

Come with me
My love
To the sea
The sea of love

I wanna tell you
How much
I love you

Come with me
To the sea
of love

Do you remember
When we met
That's the day
I knew you were my pet

I wanna tell you
Just how much
I love you

I wanna tell you
Just how much
I love you.

30. Your Song or Forever Young
Elton John- Your Song

It's a little bit funny this feeling inside
I'm not one of those who can easily hide
I don't have much money but boy if I did
I'd buy a big house where we both could live

If I was a sculptor, but then again, no
Or a man who makes potions in a travelling show
I know it's not much but it's the best I can do
My gift is my song and this one's for you

And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple but now that it's done
I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you're in the world

I sat on the roof and kicked off the moss
Well a few of the verses well they've got me quite cross
But the sun's been quite kind while I wrote this song
It's for people like you that keep it turned on

So excuse me forgetting but these things I do
You see I've forgotten if they're green or they're blue
Anyway the thing is what I really mean
Yours are the sweetest eyes I've ever seen

And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple but now that it's done
I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you're in the world
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rod Stewart- Forever Young
May the Good Lord be with ya down every road you roam
And may sunshine and happiness surround you when you're far from home
And may you grow to be proud, dignified, and true
And do unto others as you would have done to you
Be courageous and be brave
And in my heart you'll always stay
Forever young (forever young)
Forever young (forever young)
May good fortune be with you, may your guiding light be strong
Build a stairway to heaven with a prince or vagabond
And may you never love in vain
And in my heart you will remain
Forever young (forever young)
Forever young (forever young)
And when you fin'lly fly away I'll be hopin' that I served ya well
For all the wisdom of a lifetime no one can ever tell
But whatever road ya choose
I'm right behind you, win or lose
Forever young (forever young)
Forever young (forever young)
31. Through the Years- Kenny Rogers
I can't remember when you weren't there
When I didn't care for anyone but you
I swear we've been through everything there is
Can't imagine anything we've missed
Can't imagine anything the two of us can't do
Through the years
You've never let me down
You turned my life around
The sweetest days I've found
I've found with you
Through the years
I've never been afraid
I've loved the life we've made
And I'm so glad I've stayed
Right here with you
Through the years
I can't remember what I used to do
Who I trusted, whom I listened to before
I swear you've taught me everything I know
Can't imagine needing someone so
But through the years it seems to me
I need you more and more
Through the years
Through all the good and bad
I knew how much we had
I've always been so glad
To be with you
Through the years
It's better everyday
You've kissed my tears away
As long as it's okay
I'll stay with you
Through the years
Through the years
When everything went wrong
Together we were strong
I know that I belonged
Right here with you
Through the years
I never had a doubt
We'd always work things out
I've learned what love's about
By loving you
Through the years
Through the years
You've never let me down
You've turned my life around
The sweetest days I've found
I've found with you
Through the years
It's better everyday
You've kissed my tears away
As long as it's okay
I'll stay with you
Through the years
32. More Suggestions
Louis Armstrong- What a Wonderful World
I see trees of green........ red roses too
I see ’em bloom..... for me and for you
And I think to myself.... what a wonderful world.
I see skies of blue..... clouds of white
Bright blessed days....dark sacred nights
And I think to myself .....what a wonderful world.
The colors of a rainbow.....so pretty ..in the sky
Are also on the faces.....of people ..going by
I see friends shaking hands.....sayin’.. how do you do
They’re really sayin’......i love you.
I hear babies cry...... I watch them grow
They’ll learn much more.....than I’ll never know
And I think to myself .....what a wonderful world
The colors of a rainbow.....so pretty ..in the sky
Are there on the faces.....of people ..going by
I see friends shaking hands.....sayin’.. how do you do
They’re really sayin’...*spoken*(I ....love....you).
I hear babies cry...... I watch them grow
*spoken*(you know their gonna learn
A whole lot more than I’ll never know)
And I think to myself .....what a wonderful world
Yes I think to myself .......what a wonderful world.
____________________________________________________
The Beatles- In My Life
There are places I remember
all my life, though some have changed.
Some forever, not for better.
And some have gone, and some remain.
All these places have their moments
with lovers and friends I still can't recall.
Some are dead and some are living.
In my life I love them all.
But of all these friends and lovers,
there is no one compares with you.
And these memories lose their meaning
when I think of love as something new.
Though I know I'll never ever lose affection
for people and things that went before,
I know I'll often stop and think about them.
In my life I love you more.
Though I know I'll never ever lose affection
for people and things that went before,
I know I'll often stop and think of them.
But in my life I loved you more.
I love you more.
I love you more.
Stevie Wonder- You Are The Sunshine Of My Life
You are the sunshine of my life
That's why I'll always be around
You are the apple of my eye
Forever you'll stay in my heart
I feel like this is the beginning
'though I've loved you for a million years
And if I thought our love was ending
I'd find myself drowning in my own tears
Whoa whoa
You are the sunshine of my life
That's why I'll always stay around
You are the apple of my eye
Forever you'll stay in my heart
You must have known that I was lonely
Because you came to my rescue
And I know that this must be heaven
How could so much love be inside of you
You are the sunshine of my life
That's why I'll always stay around
You are the apple of my eye
Forever you'll stay in my heart
The Carpenters- Close To You
Why do birds suddenly appear
Every time you are near?
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you.
Why do stars fall down from the sky
Every time you walk by?
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you.
On the day that you were born
The angels got together
And decided to create a dream come true
So they sprinkled moon dust in your hair of gold
And starlight in your eyes of blue.
That is why all the girls in town
Follow you all around.
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you.
On the day that you were born
The angels got together
And decided to create a dream come true
So they sprinkled moon dust in your hair of gold
And starlight in your eyes of blue.
That is why all the girls in town
Follow you all around.
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you.
Just like me (Just like me)
They long to be
Close to you.
Eric Clapton- Change The World
If I can reach the stars,
Pull one down for you,
Shine it on my heart
So you could see the truth:
That this love I have inside
Is everything it seems.
But for now I find
It’s only in my dreams.
And I can change the world,
I will be the sunlight in your universe.
You would think my love was really something good,
Baby if I could change the world.
And if I could be king,
Even for a day,
I’d take you as my queen;
I’d have it no other way.
And our love would rule
This kingdom we had made.
Till then I’d be a fool,
Wishing for the day...
That I can change the world,
I would be the sunlight in your universe.
You would think my love was really something good,
Baby if I could change the world.
I could change the world,
I would be the sunlight in your universe.
You would think my love was really something good,
Baby if I could change the world.
33. "I Hope You Dance," Leann Womack
If/when my son gets married, that's what I'll pick. Great progressive song, medium slow. I'd probably do a rumba to it, but then, I LOVE the rumba.
Lyrics:
I hope you never lose your sense of wonder
You get your fill to eat
But always keep that hunger
May you never take one single breath for granted
God forbid love ever leave you empty handed
I hope you still feel small
When you stand by the ocean
Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens
Promise me you'll give fate a fighting chance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance
I hope you dance
etc.
