am i the only one who thought 'napoleon dynamite' SUCKED?

everyone i know thinks it's a phenomenal movie.

mrs. unblock and i rented it and it was one of the very few movies we couldn't even bear to watch to the end.

we both thought it dragged and there was not a single funny thing at all.

can someone 'splain it to me? yes, i did grow up with people very much like napoleon (drawing ligers on their notebook and such, disgusted with everything, etc.) but i found nothing humorous about it.

and generally, we love many kinds of movies including comedies, but this one is just lost on us.

I really didn't get what the big deal was about this movie. I didn't find it funny even once. I thought all of the characters, starting with the title character, were pretty much unlikable.

I wish someone would explain it to me, also.

But then, I thought movies were supposed to have a plot to them.

I guess the phenomenon lies in the one-liners, much like how "Wayne's World", "Tommy Boy" and "Clerks" became popular. But i guess the one-liners in "Napoleon" were too subtle for me because I found myself dozing off in the middle of watching the movie.

13. I think it's a subtle message movie about getting over past hurts

I think it's a movie geared more toward people in their 20s and 30s, not teenagers.

It's warning you not to become an "Uncle Rico", who obsesses about what might have been, and lives totally in the past, and wants to return to the past to "right the wrongs".

But what the movie is trying to tell us is that no matter how bad or disappointing it was, it really wasn't THAT bad. Even if you felt like a geek or an outcast (like many of the characters) there were still friends, there were still moments of fun, new experiences and life lessons that were valuable and enriched you.

Life can be a delight, even for the misfits. Look at Chip, who keeps a (mostly) blissful state of Zen ignorance about his conditions, and he finds true love!

Anyway, that was how I saw the movie. YMMV

32. No, it wasn't about gender at all.

It comes from her novel "Emma" where Emma's father is fussing about an activity enjoyed by other characters that he considers dangerous and can't understand why they would want to do it.

Emma is the one who actually utters the phrase trying to explain to her father that what he considers alarming and dangerous is fun for others.

we turned it off about about 15-20 minutes and mailed it back to netflix. The only movie we watched for less time was the 2d Jim Carrey Ace Ventura crap.

It really wasn't even all that clever. Just weird and uncomfortable. It had some funny moments, and I guess I didn't think it sucked THAT hard, but no where near as good as some people make it out to be.
