WOMAN, 38, DIES CRUSHED BY CRUCIFIX DURING MASS

http://www.agi.it/english/news.pl?doc=200508101533-1109-RT1-CRO-0-NF11&page=0&id=agionline-eng.oggitalia

<snip>
(AGI) - Oristano, Italy, Aug 10 - A woman died crushed by an iron crucifix at the entrance of the church of San Lorenzo while she was attending mass in the city's patron saint's celebrations. Paoletta Orru', 38, had returned to Mogorella, near Oristano, with her husband and two children especially for the celebration of San Lorenzo. Tomorrow was her birthday. This morning the woman was outside of the busy church, together with other devotees who did not manage to enter. Suddenly, around 12, the heavy crucifix about one metre wide fell from the entrance of the church where it was placed, crushing the woman. The emergency services immediately dispatched a helicopter, but when they arrived from the nearby Ales they warned that it was not necessary any more: the victim, hit on the head, died due to a strong concussion. Fire-fighters and police arrived and will inspect the scene. The accident is currently unexplained. A youth, who was grazed by the crucifix, suffered a slight injury to his ankle and will heal in 4-5 days. (AGI) .
<snip>

Kinda interesting.

I saw the thread title and said 'Holy Crap' loud enough for my coworkers to hear me

:rofl:

Then the first response says 'Holy Crap'

:rofl:

It's not that funny, really, maybe I've had too much caffeine?!

(for the record, I am laughing at myself, not at this woman's tragic death)

20. The thing about broad brushes is.....
they get the paint job done quicker. :hi:

I saw nothing wrong with that. You could say the same things about my lineage (Mexican) and the poster would be right about that too. Superstition is cultural with their own tales and beliefs.

58. There you go....
Look what your passive-agressiveness got you! HA! :)

Nah, just kidding. I think the other poster said it best, but here is my attempt. I could say Italians make the best food. But not all of them cook. Some hate cooking. Some would also say they hate italian food. You could find many caveats, but this is something cultural and its what they are known for. Being superstitious is another thing, it is engrained in the culture. That's all.

21. I'm Italian and I wasn't offended by that phrase
it definitely has a kernel of truth. Maybe modern Italians and Italian-Americans have moved past our Old World ways, but you should have seen my grandmother and her superstitions. I think a lot of it stems from old world Catholicism and pagan traditions that came before.

54. So it's okay if we make broad brush statements about Italians as
long as you're not offended by them?

My ex-mother-in-law was a bigot, she frequently called a friend of mine a Guinea to his face.
She said that she "didn't mean anything by it" and would laugh when her sons tried to correct her.

But then, I expected that from her.
She wasn't a liberal progressive.

but provincial Italians who populate the villages. Where do you think all those hand gestures come from indicating things like the "evil eye" and horns? I read recently where Berlusconi banned psychics and seers from Italian TV because they were dominating the airwaves.

They say Americans as a nationality are open and friendly. Are they all?

Italian Woman Killed by Falling Crucifix
Wednesday, September 22, 2004

ROME — A woman was killed Wednesday when a nearly 7-foot-tall metal crucifix (search) fell on her head in a small town in southern Italy, police said.

Maddalena Camillo, 72, was walking in the main square in the village of Sant'Onofrio when the crucifix toppled from a monument being restored for a religious celebration, police said.

Sant'Onofrio is in the region of Calabria (search), the toe of the boot-shaped Italian peninsula, about 370 miles south of Rome

61. What's sad is it could have easily been avoided...
If they had only listened to Bill Hick's logic and replaced the cross with the Jesus fish, she could have just leaped into the center.

"When Jesus finally comes back, you really think he wants to see a fucking cross? 'Look at that big one on that rap guy...no way dad, they completely missed the point, I'm not going back. Maybe when they start wearing fishes instead.' Almost like going up to Jackie Onassis with a rifle pendant, don't you think? Just thinking of John...just thinking of John."
