What do you do when a friend continues to borrow a dollar here a
dollar there and never pays you back? Do you still give them a buck and write it off? And what if you ask to borrow one and they say they don't have it?

1. stop loaning money. if you keep giving them money, then you're the fool
no offense intended, for allowing them to continue to take advantage...

Just don't have it on you.

Had a few like that... it takes a while to catch on, doesn't it?

*sigh*

2. Tell him you can give him a quarter today and the rest later.
Eventually they'll get the hint.

4. Either stop loaning or consider it money gone.
Loaning money can ruin a friendship. I give money and if I get it back, great, if not, I never expected to anyway.

8. Amen.
My husband is always trying to help a needy friend out. And trust me, we're not that loaded either.

Last time, a kid needed $1,000 to put down on a truck. I told my husband we could only afford $500 (even then we stripped our savings). He assured me the kid would pay us back. I told him that I considered it as gone.

One year later, we got $100 and the kid had totaled the truck after having it a month.

Yet next time, my husband will still be the generous one, gotta love him.

6. You tell them ...sorry...can't do it today..I'm short myself...
Sounds to me as though you are being walked on...and how...

Some friend...

Don't let your so-called friend take advantage of you...

That person is not a friend, who would do such a thing...

Are you a goddess, or a doormat?

if they give it to you, that's your payback, if they don't, that's your reason.

If it's a moocher acquaintance they get told off. My friends can have the shirt off my back if they need it.

14. Fool me once, shame on you
Fool me twice, shame on me. Or as our fearless leader likes to say, "Fool me once... uh... uh... we won't get fooled again."

If it bothers you, tell them you are no longer going to feed a black hole. If it doesn't bother you, write it off and don't think about it.

15. Maybe let him/her know that you're keeping track
Like pull out a piece of paper and write it down. I bet s/he quits very quickly after that.

Alternatively, just say, actually I only have $X and I need it tonight every time, and I think s/he will get the point.

16. But it would have to be done gently. A friendship
may be at stake here. Money causes a lot of friendships to go kaput!

22. Definitely! For me, if it was only a few bucks a month, I'd just blow it
off. But if it's like a habitual deal where the person really doesn't carry cash because s/he knows s/he can get it from me, I'd be a little more aggressive about stopping it.

I have a neighbor who was having hard times who almost got into the habit of asking me for $ when things were rough. He's never paid it back, and that's fine, but I certainly could not afford to be his bank. Luckily he stopped after a few trips.

24. Well you certainly don't want to be taken advantage of.
That is why I don't loan money. Like I said earlier, I give it if I have it. If I get it back, great, if not, I didn't intend to anyway. Friendships are too important for money to get in the way! I know you probably feel that way too. But a true friend also wouldn't take andvantage of a situation like that either!

19. I've loaned to friends before.
If it's paid back, I consider it "found" money. If not, I let it go. Everybody needs help sometimes. Now, if it became too frequent, I would probably have to cut it off.

25. If the sums really are a dollar here and a dollar there and you are
Edited on Wed Aug-10-05 04:43 PM by Nay
never paid back, this person is not your friend but a mooch. A dollar cannot get this "friend" out of a jam, nor can it do anything for him in an emergency. He is buying cigarettes or junk food, and he's found a way for someone else (you) to pay for it. It is also a subtle way some people use to 'dominate' others. Don't fall for it. This kind of mooching is the same kind of mooching displayed by a coworker who always assumes he can dump his work on you -- and you should just go along and accept it.

This person is not your friend. Just because he "borrows" very small sums means nothing. His attitude is that you are a permanent ATM. The next time he asks for money, don't apologize, don't say you don't have it, don't explain in any way. Just say "NO." If he gets indignant (and I bet ya he will!) and demands an explanation, offer none. Just walk away.

Don't do it! If they stop being your friend over this, they aren't really your friend to begin with. I only have a small handful of friends because so many people in the world are irritating leeches like this. It's not worth it.
