Does okra even have a good nutritional profile?

Let's see... (you need Adobe Acrobat downloaded to see this file...)

Your mother apparently couldn't cook if you think okra isn't good...it's called frying it you don't boil it or it turns to snot and is very un-southern way to cook it. Yes I am offended as a southerner that someone dissed okra.

Maybe your family is from the south but you apparently are not and can't comment on how good okra is...as I said it should be fried.

Ok don't you 2 get mad but dissing okra ain't right and I hadta defend it's honour.

23. Pickles aren't mean and bitter - they have issues
there they were - happy little baby cucumbers, looking to grow up to be big strong cucumbers, when there plucked off the vine and forced to swim around in dill-soaked salty water until they shrivel up and go all wrinkly (not unlike Barbara Bush - THERE'S mean and bitter) to become the delightful crunchy pickles many know and love.

Pity the pickles - they have issues......

6. Haggis
Traditional Haggis (from Evelyn Hlabse, esh2@po.CWRU.Edu)

1 sheep's pluck (stomach bag)
2 lb.. dry oatmeal
1 lb. suet
1 lb. lamb's liver
2 1/2 cups stock
1 large chopped onion
1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper, Jamaica pepper and salt

Boil liver and parboil the onion, then mince them together. Lightly brown the oatmeal. Mix all ingredients together. Fill the sheep's pluck with the mixture pressing it down to remove all the air, and sew up securely. Prick the haggis in several places so that it does not burst. Place haggis in boiling water and boil slowly for 4-5 hours. Serves approximately 12.

38. Your haggis recipe is missing a few ingredients
Edited on Wed Aug-10-05 06:06 PM by Xithras
1 sheep's lung
1 sheep heart

The basic haggis recipe is simple: Pack all of the guts from a freshly killed sheep...except for the intestines...into its stomach along with oatmeal and spice to taste. Tie off the ends of the stomach, drop it into water, and boil.

As nasty as it sounds, properly prepared Haggis isn't all that bad. In reality, a haggis is just a large sausage. Just keep in mind that it's intended to be eaten alongside a large volume of Scotch Ale or Whiskey, and the flavors should mix as you eat it. Tabasco also helps :)

How about that great delicacy of the Philippines... Baalut. You take a fertilized duck or chicken egg, bury it in the ground for a few weeks and then enjoy. Also known as "the treat with feet" or "the egg with legs". Best enjoyed after many, many, many beers. This is a Filipino delicacy--a duck egg containing a half-formed duckling, soft-boiled and eaten out of shell with a spoon. (Slurp! Crunch-crunch! Yum!)

I used to go to a Vietnamese bar in downtown Los Angeles years ago called "Dragon Lady" where the Vietnamese owner would bring out of jar of hot vit lon and the Vietnamese bar girls would go ape, eating the duck eggs and baby ducks inside as though it was candy. They say the meat has a sweet, nut-like flavor but it looks pretty ugly.

I agree with him on the anchovies; however, I do like liver. I just don't eat it any more because it's the organ that gathers all the toxicity from the body.

Jewish folk still have their chopped chicken liver with onions. Yummy, actually, at least to me...

But then I worked as a cook in an old folks home -- relief cook on the weekends -- and it seem at least every other weekend they served liver. Staff got to eat free as long as we had what was on the menu. Being the continually-broke college student that I was, I started eating free liver (as opposed to free-range liver). I started to like it.

105. I'm with you on natto
The guides to Japanese cuisine refer to natto as "fermented soybeans."

Nope, miso is fermented soybeans. Natto is rotten soybeans, as in "tastes like the inside of a ripe garbage can smells." It doesn't help that it looks like baked beans but has a gummy, tacky coating that leaves "strings" when you lift it with your chopsticks.

My first encounter with natto was accidental. I saw it in a conveyer belt sushi shop a couple of weeks after my first arrival in Japan and thought it was baked beans. Boy, was I wrong. I nearly spat it out but forced it down. I gulped down some tea and asked the woman next to me what that stuff was. She smiled knowingly (even a lot of Japanese hate it) and said, "Natto."

I decided then and there to avoid it, but a few months later, one of my English tutoring students invited me to his house for dinner. On the way from the train station to his house, he told me that the dinner was going to center on his wife's homemade natto.

I was tempted to run back to the train station.

Somehow I managed to choke down a bowl of that vile substance.

Outside of the small, organic farm, how any animal got to any plate is horrible and disgusting.

I do recall that in most cases, it did taste good. I used to love swordfish and a good seafood newburg. However, the reprehensible treatment throughout the animal industry can't be warranted but for the taste buds.

and I buy mine from a halal butcher (all organic, locally raised beef, goat, mutton and chicken...no pork, of course). I'm not Muslim, but the meat is both less expensive (probably because the butcher deals directly with the producers) and organic, which is a major bonus.

110. One of my great-uncles, whose wife was Swedish, described
lutefisk as tasting like "warm snot."

I was spared lutefisk, because my father, the son of Norwegian immigrants, was forced to eat it, hated it, and was determined never to inflict it on his children.

However, the women at our church put on an annual lutefisk supper in December, and masochistic Scandinavian-Americans came from the whole Twin Cities metro area to attend it.

I later learned that modern-day Norwegians think of lutefisk as roughly equivalent to hard tack and salt pork, strictly peasant food.

79. Have you ever tried homemade mayonnaise?
It can be very delicious. You just take yellow egg yokes and place them into a bowl (preferably wood) and some olive oil and then grind it with a steady wrist motion with a pestle, continuing to add more olive oil as you go. You can add garlic or lemon juice after you whip it up. If you make it in a natural way with natural ingredients (especially the olive oil), it's fantastic.

115. Was it the prepackaged variety?
Miso soup is one Japanese food that foreigners generally like. You take some fish broth crystals (dashi), boil them up, add about a teaspoon of miso (red or white, as you prefer) per person, and then add one or all of the following: soft tofu, sliced scallions, wakame seaweed. Good stuff.

But the prepackaged stuff is too salty and too chemically.

88. 3rd vote for durian
i had a friend, an older vietnamese gentleman, that brought a durian plant in for everybody to try.

he took me to the room where it was, and put a little piece in a cup for me, and took one for himself. he began to eat it and looked at me. . . ya know that look. "hey give it a try".

holy shit. my gag reflex instantly kicked in. he looked at me and giggled to himself. he knew what he was doing.

of course, it's a delicacy from his homeland. a birthday dish even. some say that it's the only fruit that a tiger will eat because the scent resembles rotting flesh.

a sidestory: the man that I worked with, had an amazing life story. He fought with the ARVN at the age of 15, and he told me a lot about the Vietnam war. VC had killed most of his family. He told me about VC strategy vs American psychology (Americans feel comfortable in their bases, and VC would capitalise on this by attacking what the Americans believed was the strongest point of a base. he illustrated this by saying that if the americans had a hardened bunker with one exit, the VC would come in thru the back wall, where they were least expected. He also said that he always felt sorry for the American soldiers, who were so much taller and larger. to the Vietnamese, of course, size was considered a disadvantage - a very telling difference in psychologies. After the fall of Saigon, my friend spent 8 years in a Vietnamese prison until he was released, and made it to Cali as one of the "boat-people". He now has 7 children, who he would proudly update me on frequently, all were on the honor-roll. A great American story, that man. He was in his late 50's, but despite all that he had been thru the man looked 30 years old. A great soul.

Thanks for letting me share. The Vietnamese people are beautiful, durian notwithstanding;)

Edited on Wed Aug-10-05 09:55 PM by aint_no_life_nowhere
and in the year I spent in France going to school, I had it frequently. Flan is very popular throughout southern Europe where it originated. The best kind is when it's about a couple of days old and very cold from the refrigerator and the caramel has managed to invade the crevices in the custard texture below.

86. I saw this on the Food Network, in a show about strange foods
I kid you not, in India there is a delicacy made from unborn goats.

Apparantly the fetal goats are found when pregnant goats are slaughtered and the whole thing, sac and all is part of the dish.

I could not believe this.

Quite disgusting.

Do I win?

my other suggestion was going to be souse (head cheese) or chitterlings.

I agree with the fried okra poster ...that stuff is wonderful.

Grits are good if baked with sharp cheese, red pepper and garlic in a souffle.

Flan is a food of the gods.

To appreciate just how bad this "food" item smells, borrow a semi with about 30 tons of cargo in the trailer, go to the top of Old White Bird Hill Road in Idaho (top of hill 4200 feet, bottom of hill 1600 feet, road three miles long), drive to the bottom with one foot on the brakes and the other on the gas the whole way down, get out of the cab when you get to the town of White Bird, and take a nice deep whiff of the tractor's brakes.

Now imagine eating that.

This bread pudding is so foul, an interrogator once told me the Geneva Convention prohibits feeding it to detainees.

It will clear out a mess tent.

It will probably remove varnish from wood but since I can't stand to be within 30 feet of the shit, I can't tell you whether it would work. Looks like it would, though.

We had a field exercise at Fort Drum in which the company commander miscalculated his food requirements (he thought it was six soldiers on a T-rat, not 12) and had a big pile of food left over at the end of the exercise. He piled it all up next to the arms room and told everyone to take what they wanted. No one wanted the bread pudding.

If the Army were suddenly to get the idea that we'd be interoperating with a lot of Scottish units and decided to invent a haggis MRE (complete with a bottle of Scotch in the bag alongside the haggis) so we'd have something to feed them, American soldiers would gladly choose the haggis MRE over T-rat bread pudding.

We surveyed ten soldiers. Seven chose the new Liver and Onions MRE over T-rat bread pudding, two chose fasting and one picked seppuku. Fortunately, we got that guy stopped before he was able to harm himself. (Okay, we had to shoot him. But he didn't harm himself!)

Okay, all kidding aside, this item really sucks. Which is why they need to save it up in case the "Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is Act of 2007" (which drafts all the chickenhawks) comes to fruition over Bush's veto.

142. There are loads of different types
The traditional English form is black-pudding - it is absolutely totally yummilicious. A proper fried breakfast is no-where without it.

111. Well, I stopped at a convenience store the other day to pick up
a soda and what I thought was plain pork rinds. In actuality it turned out to be vinegar-flavored pork rinds.

You ever taste something, and then feel your salivary glands cramp up? That's what happened. I fed them to my dogs. They didn't eat them either.

121. What are "fumigated olives". Anyone know?
When I was in my early twenties, I went on the road in my rock band and we toured the state of Texas. I remember that the band stayed for 6 weeks on the cow pastured outskirts of Dallas and that the only food available around our cheap motel was a kind of Armenian or Middle Eastern store that had very weird food. They had a big sign outside that advertised things like "Tahini Borgul" and something else called "Fumigated Olives". They had several barrels full of these "fumigated olives" inside and they apparently were a big seller. I never got up the nerve to try them.

143. Anything sold in a fast-food 'restaurant'
99.99% of the time it's over processed, mechanically recovered (let's not go there), over salted, over additivised (I know that that's not a word) crap.

I'm going to take a big stand against those fools who've mentioned black-pudding (or indeed other types of blood-sausage), haggis and liver. These are all among the most wonderful foods around.

187. Jellyfish is another food I just can't get into
I was asked to try it when I went to China. They serve it in a kind of salad. You can also get it in southern California at many Chinese restaurants in the Chinese neighborhoods. Having been stung by a jellyfish once and having seen what they look like in nature, it just doesn't work for me.

But I did try snake soup in China made with white pieces of snake. It was quite good.
