Can someone give me a hug right now?
I just got a call from my doctor and I have breast cancer. :scared: Supposedly, it's very early and treatable but because it's an unusual (sic) case, he wants to confer with other doctors before proceeding. Yeah, that makes me feel real confident. :sarcasm:

My husband's on a plane, my sisters and Mom are not answering their phones, and my local friends have been suggesting alternative therapies. I know they are trying to help and eventually I would like to hear their ideas. Just not now. I love where I live but sometimes the new age stuff is just a little too much for me.

I need a hug.

30. GreenPartyVoter, your pictures are beautiful!
We're leaving Portland, Oregon and bound for Victoria, B.C., Canada.

Taking the ferry from Anacortes, Washington over to Vancouver Island.

We've been there before -- from Christmas to New Year's -- but this is the first summer trip.

I can't wait until Friday!!!

17. Stay calm and focus on the people who you have around you.
Is there a breast cancer support group in your area? If so, contact them. Can people on the DU private message you with suggestions?
Make sure that feature is turned on.

This was a cruel way to tell you about this -- by telephone -- with no one to support you immediately. The doctor was not following protocol, which involves (usually) giving this information IN PERSON with another adult present who can drive you home if you become distraught. Please accept my condolences on the methods that doctors without consciences utilize today in the name of the Almighty Dollar. I will think of you mightily as you decide how to treat this illness. (I don't pray, but others will...)

Making peace the priority,

Radio Lady

26. I know what you mean about wanting to know. Maybe he thought he was
doing you a favor.

You might need some anti-anxiety medication for a couple of weeks while you explore your options.

Please take care of yourself. I don't know how old you are, but whatever age, you need to get other opinions. Did they do a breast biopsy? Or was this information from mammography?

Let us know.

Have you reached your family yet?

When is your husband going to be reachable?

46. Get as many opinions as you can under your health plan. You need
enough to make an informed decision about what to do. If two weren't certain, ask yourself what is needed to come to a conclusion. I don't know enough about pathology to advise you.

Do you have a history of breast cancer in your family?

I worked in the health care field. If the doctor told you it was in its early stage, it is.

I have many, many friends who have survived breast cancer, including one who had significant lymph node involvement.

I am pulling for you. Find a support group. The hospital should have one and it will make a tremendous difference in your dealing with this.

Best wishes and prayers.

45. You are in my thoughts. Just the same, though ...
You should be relieved, or at least proud, that you had the foresight to get tested and found it so early. There are a lot of people out there who haven't the bravery to do the same.

I'm not a woman so I don't say this with any experience, but isn't breast cancer one of the most treatable forms when caught early? Both of my grandfathers went through cancer, and I've found that it helped me (and them) to try and keep an eye on the positives.

57. Cally, a big hug for you...
Just remember...your friends are well-meaning, but you don't need to be second guessing right now. Your doctor will assemble a team, with whom he will consult, to decide your best course of treatment. That shouldn't cause you to lose faith in your doctor. It's quite normal with cancer patients...my dad's doctor, a world renown gastric oncologist, assembled a consultation team during my father's treatment. He's 100% cancer free today.

I am saying a prayer for you and your family. If you ever need to talk, feel free to PM me.

My grandmother had breast cancer, and had a double mastectomy, and she survived to the age of 93 when she passed of alzheimers.

It was probably 25 or so years ago when she was diagnosed. Think of how far treatment has come since then!!

You have caught it early, that is such a great thing.

69. I'll add my hugs and good wishes
As hard as it is, try to focus on the words early and treatable. I have several friends who have sucessfully been treated for breast cancer and are now considered cancer-free. One friend was even stage 4 and given little chance, that was in 1999 and she is still in remission.

I hope you reach your family soon and that they are a great source of support. As you see, we at DU are also willing to listen and send long distance hugs.

72. Oh, honey, I'm so, so sorry.
I'm sorry you had to find out about this when everybody's away. I completely understand what you're saying about people suggesting treatments at this stage.

So, hugs coming your way. It's good that it's early and at least your doctor is caring enough to take some extra time on your case. Sounds like you have a good one.

Hang in there. We're all thinking about you and here for you.

I hope your husband gets home soon so that HE can hold you in his warm embrace. You're going to need his strength for the days when you are sad, mad and downright feeling bad!

I hope too, that your sisters also get checked out as a precaution for their good health.

Try not to worry too much about the doctor wanting to discuss your case with colleagues. He may just want to be sure he understands the best way to go about treating your condition. In such cases it can be better to have several heads working together.
