David Roback was one of the founders of The Rain Parade, one of the great bands of the early 80's. He then started a band called Opal w/ Kendra Simth, who played bass in another one of the great band from that time, The Dream Syndicate. Opal is pretty much an embyonic version of Mazzy Star, and I prefer Kendra's voice to Hope, but that's just me.

You should check out the one-shot album that the Paisley Underground bands (bands from L.A. like The Bangles, Dream Syndicate, Rain Parade, Three O' Clock)made in the mid 80's called "Rainy Day", where they do a few Velvet Underground, Neil Young, and Hendrix songs. It's a classic...

It's got kind of an early '90's, post-grunge, intellectual vibe to it.

9. I love Mazzy Star...

I have all 3 of their albums and have been waiting for #4 for more than a few years now! Hope Sandoval has a beautiful voice. I like her album Bavarian Fruit Bread too, but have to be in the exact mood (melancholy) to listen to it...

16. an interesting cd I bought on ebay

a couple of years ago. It's "Opal Live in Berlin", a boot, and was recorded when Opal was on tour after Kendra just up and left the band and David brought in Hope...She sings on the "Happy Nightmare Baby" songs plus they do "Ghost On The Higheay" from their first lp and the Velvet Underground's "Heroin"...
The sound quality is iffy, but if you play with the dials you can get a pretty good impression of what they sounded like during this time...
A friend of mine saw them play on this tour in Portland...But they played in December and a snowstorm happened and the city was paralyzed and the show didn't get advertised and I never heard about it and I'll always kinda regret that...

17. I got to see Mazzy Star open for The Cocteau Twins...

in Philly 1991, that's really where I got turned on to them. WXPN played 'Halah' in the rotation but I didn't know any of the other tracks. After seeing them I got 'She Hangs Brightly' the next day. Been a fan since. :-)

My all time favorite song of theirs is 'Ride it On' - absolutely love it. :7

1991 is about the same time for me! That blizzard I mentioned earlier was in Dec 1990 (for here a whopper) and that is when they played here at Satyricon. (Come to think of it, I also missed a Hawkwind concert during those few days!) My 80 year old aunt from Brockton Mass. was visiting and we had an ice storm on top of the snow and my dad got bitten by a neighbor's dog on Christmas Day!

Ah well, jeeze...the things you think of and remember sometimes!

Velvet Underground and even Doors influences, but updated splendidly for the early 90s in such a way as to make it unique.

First heard the strains wafting through the air of the Bridgeport Brewpub in 1992, shortly before the victory of Bill Clinton over 12 rotten years of Reagan/Bush.

Reminds me of a guy I dated in the early-mid 90's. He liked that CD and he recorded for me as a Valentine's gift. I liked it too.

Things didn't work out between us, but we remained friends because of our work in common (he was always very comfortable as a mentor). He took up with another woman within a year after we quit dating. I eventually got married. He is now splitting up with his partner and moving this weekend out of their house. He sees the value in maintaining a friendship with me, but he's fond of my spouse too, so he is coming for a visit in another week or so. He's in the mood to :hide:

I heard "Fade Into You" again on a re-run of Felicity about 3 weeks ago and thought of this friend. The words seem relevant again for him and sort of for me.

My 2 other fav songs on that same CD are "Five String Serenade" and "Blue Light". Hope has a really haunting voice, but I like it a lot.
