Computer folks: I just got DSL, works - but landline phone is unusable...
while the DSL modem is activated. All of the filters have been added, as proper.
What's odd is that I can use the landline phone, then turn on the DSL modem, BUT, I can't have the DSL modem on and THEN use the phone. The SBC help person said she never heard of anything like this... anyone have any ideas? (LOL, maybe the gov't is moving its surveillance equipment  agent Mike?)

BTW, I have a Dell PC, Windows ME, and Internet Explorer.

Thanks,
Lori

1. Check installation instructions. Perhaps you did not do the installation
in the proper sequence?

3. Hi, thanks. I did... should I re-seat all the filters, even though...
they're on there?
It's odd, as the phone can be used and continues to function if I then turn ON the DSL modem, afterwords. But, I can't stitch the order of those tasks. How strange is that?

2. You have to..
.... insert the DSL filters in series with your phones!

6. You should have gotten..
.... a few DSL filters with your installation kit.

You disconnect your phone, plug in the filter, and the plug the phone into the filter.

If you didn't get any DSL filters that is DEFINITELY your problem. When you put DSL on your phone line you are using some high-frequency signals that will seriously disrupt your regular phone. The filters keep that stuff out of your phone.

8. Yup, I got them... I am going to re-seat them right now, until I get...
better ones. I have some wires in the basement (old-style phone wires) w. a 'hard-wired' phone connected to them - I bet that is a problem, too.
(Nothing is ever easy, for some reason...)
Thanks,
Lori

10. To be honest...
... I don't believe in "better". If they didn't work, the telco that gave them to you would be spending thousands of $$$ on tech support for no reason.

If you have them and you have hooked them up, they oughta work.

13. Might be
I was told that every phone in the house has to be on a filter. Can you disconnect that basement phone or put a filter on it?

14. It was hard wired (!?!), so the only way to 'disconnect' it was to cut...
...the small phone wires at its end.

11. You can also ask the phone company to retest the line...
... because a problem in your local system or in the lines to the exchange can have a problem which will raise the noise level on the line to a point which can make the phone line unuseable.

If you're reasonably sure the filters are installed correctly (be sure to check all phone devices in the house--answering machines, other phones away from the computer, the works), then call the phone company and have them check the line for excessive noise.

Cheers.

12. They are going to do further tests from their end. Hopefully, it's their..
problem, and not my wiring in the house, <g>.
